Meh

Album image #1
bottomside is even worse, intakes especially. not sure what they were thinking, if at all, with the parts break-down the way they went...

Album image #2
underside painted with tamiya sky grey toned down a bit with tamiya med. grey and masked off.

topside 1st color down: tamiya royal blue toned down with tamiya sky blue. both paints being glossy is a bit concerning. thinned them with regular mr thinner, hopefully they'll cure fast enough for the upcoming masking frenzy.

Album image #3
after hours of masking, camo is complete.

radome, antiglare and dielectric panels will be next.

notice something with the lightest blue?

Album image #4
check the dorsal spine, as well the opposite view which is the project album cover taken by same photographer.

nose section and aft section look like they are 2 different batches of the same paint - the difference in tone is significant especially on the front. the effects do seem to extend to the wings however without a proper top shot it's impossible to tell.

Album image #5
paintjob completed. decals followed over tamiya gloss coat.

don't know what to do next... :/

i'll keep the pitot and radome until the last possible moment. kit's track record indicates that pitot won't fit into the nose and will require putty and blending work, so no reason to paint the radome beforehand.

Album image #6
hind legs are on and setting on a machine cut marble slab for proper levels with the help of the biggest invention of mankind: lego.

took care of the radome and pitot beforehand, fit wasn't as horrible as i'd imagined.

nose gear, exhausts, pylons and archers to go...

also a lesson learned, the black pen on the left side of the screen is an acetate marker which i use on tamiya tape before cutting the masks. obviously it's capable of bleeding tru ever so slightly and leaving mark on the paintjob somehow. i am aware it's probably not noticeable in these cell phone shots but you'll see them on the proper shots especially on edges of the medium blue sections. what's worst is they became visible after the gloss coat which was a bummer... 🙁

Always a pleasure to see a 29 or Flankers. 👍
This kit seems to be a lot of trouble, though it is a rather new tooling. 🙁
Didn't build many Zvezda aircraft yet, but their newer 1/35 scale tanks are quite fun.

welcome guys.

WhiteGlint: agreed with zvezda armor, not only their 35th, but recent smaller ones are a gem as well.

this mig otoh has teething problems. compared to the trumpeter's 72nd scale, parts breakdown are absurd to be honest. intakes and main wings really made me scratch my head wondering why they were like this. probably slide molding wasn't a thing back then for zvezda - just guessing.

I hate those kits where the pitot tube comes molded together with the very tip of the radome. I can never get a nice transition. I usually prefer to finish the radome as pointy as I can with some liquid styrene or epoxy, drill the tiniest possible hole in the tip and insert either a brass pitot tube or just a metal needle.

Murad, you mentioned something to notice in the lightest blue in your caption of photo 3. Is it the discoloration you mean? I have the same issue in my NVA mig, I think it is due to the mr hobby glue I have used, did you use this by any chance?
3 April 2022, 12:59
Murad ÖZER
Jan no, the real subject has the discoloration in it's light blue/grey paint, that's visible enough on the dorsal spine section.

James Jan Cuajete thank you guys. 🙂

Thomas, pitot tube of this one wasn't as terrible as i thought it will be. tho the detail is very soft, indeed a proper brass/alu would look extremely good for it has a very prominent shape unlike other modern aircraft pitot tubes.
