Thank you guys and welcome. Hope I live up to your expectations.
I have noticed that there is a completely missing part on the kit. But it is clearly visible on the real airplane. Have a look here: airliners.net/photo/..ornado-ECR/5002301/L
You can see an attachment on the underside at the front next to the nose gear doors, which is pointed at the front and has white dots/sensors. I will probably have to rebuild this. Does anyone know exactly what it is and what function it has?

Just noticed that there are no IRIS-T missiles with the kit. There are only AIM-9 Sidewinder included. But on all pictures I found of the 46+57 Tiger Tornado you can see the IRIS-T. So I'll check what I can do in this matter.

I couldn't resist my to one of my latest booty from Moson.

Nice, indeed (and very good print - I can see no layers).
1  27 April 2023, 12:32
Zsolt Czegle
It's really a good quality print. Only a minor layer are visible on some place. Only one difficult thing is there: the whole model is a single piece. So it's difficult to paint the wheels and behind them.

Michael Kohl
Let me be part of that. 🙂

But...

I stripped the paint today. The paint layer were too thick, and the little rivets were disappeared. The colors were also too dark, so after the wash it was more darker. I didn't like it.... So reset, and start again with the primer...

Incredible idea! This device is a first in many things. Starting with the fact that it is the first time something like this has flown to another planet. Who knows, this is a planet inhabited only by robots. The last interesting thing is that his disaster is the first one investigated on another planet. I look forward to seeing the finished model..

It's so small
 19 January, 01:12
Skyhiker
Yes, at 1:72 scale it is less than a centimeter tall and the propellers are about 2cm wide in total.
 19 January, 02:19
Skyhiker
I had a real scare when I was priming the model today and it flew out of my tweezers. I couldn't find it anywhere and it took a half an hour before I saw it stuck to my sock! Lucky nothing got broken.
2  19 January, 18:37
bughunter
Nice progress on this little heli 👍 Do you find pictures for the coloring?
 19 January, 18:49
Skyhiker
Hi bughunter, yes there seems to be enough photos around but the drone went through several redesigns before it went to Mars. For example the foil was gold for a while. The rotor blades' nubs were both pointing up at one point. Little things like the feet changed and the size of the battery and solar panel. I always have to go back and check the Mars mission photos to make sure what I am doing is correct.
2  20 January, 00:06
Skyhiker
I'm very close to having this done. Let's hope no catastrophes happen before it is mounted and framed.
1  9 February, 02:32
Живко Джаков
It won't be a precedent. As we've already commented, NASA crashed, so this won't be the end of the project 🙂. And one question. Where did you get your Martian soil from? Isn't the source of the survini too far away?
 9 February, 10:07
Skyhiker
Ok. After a few last minute repairs, of course I knocked off two propellers and the antenna while mounting it to the diorama, I 've finished this.

Thanks guys. Now I am considering doing an even smaller model: I might make the Sputnik satellite in 1:72 scale, it would only be 8 mm!
2  13 February, 22:42

Great model. It was a pleasure to follow its creation.
 19 February, 09:19
Skyhiker
Jennifer, I bought a cheap metal frame for 3 euros. To extend the depth of the frame I made an outer box out of 3mm MDF sheeting that someone was throwing away. Then I made an inner box out of MDF to hold the model. The middle between the two boxes is filled with cardboard for support. After I hot glued this all together I printed images of the Mars surface which I designed on the computer and the label so people will know what they are looking at. The black matt I cut out of paper. The front of the frame slides up if I ever need access to the model, which I may, because I will probably fill the gaps at the base of the model with sand since those black lines on the sides annoy me.

Nice project,
I found the kit at an antique fair. Thinking about building it.
Did you have any problems building it?
 28 January, 12:11
Curtis Caden
Ho Ko working with metal kits always brings their own issues. Hubley and JLE Scale Models have a lot of flash and I found a small 3" metal nail file worked really well cleaning the parts up and then I soaked them in vinegar which helps the primer bond to the metal. I was encouraged by a model railroad friend to build these cars and I had a lot of fun doing them.

A bit history related to this aircraft as I found that quite interessting,....
In 1932, a Junkers F13 was made available for the then Federal Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Engelbert Dollfuß, for various trips abroad. The pilot, with the rank of a government pilot, was Wilhelm Elssler (a great-nephew of Fanny Elssler the famous ballet dancer). When Dollfuss became Chancellor on 20 May, his business trips often took him to Rome to see Mussolini. He always used the latest JuF 13 machines (A48, A57, A58).
When the Douglas DC 2 emerged as the clear winner of the England-Australia race and also clearly distanced the competitors in the average cruising speed, Elssler lobbied Dollfuss for the purchase of such an aircraft. Packed in boxes, the DC2 arrived by sea from New York to Cherbourg and was assembled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. On 1 November 1934, it flew to Vienna-Aspern with the special registration A500, piloted by pilot Elssler and flight mechanic Hölzl.
Dollfuss himself did not to see the commissioning of the DC2 as a government aircraft, because he was murdered on July 25, 1934. His successor was Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg. The new DC2 could not be integrated into scheduled service, as it had to be ready for take-off at Aspern airfield at all times for government flights. Beside this it was only used for sightseeing flights and some special short trips. Due to the low capacity utilization, the DC2 was sold to Swiss Air on 12 March 1936 with only 124 flight hours and 37 flight minutes. Swiss Air already had this type of aircraft in use and added the "new one" with the registration number HB-JSA to its air fleet. Through a broker,"our" DC2 was sold to Spain on October 28, 1936, where it was used by the Republicans during the Civil War.

True, but they will need to be rescribed to a certain degree no matter what imho. Shaping that cut-up nose scares me more 😂😂😂

Nothing an entire tube of perfect plastic putty and an endless amount of sanding won't fix.

Thank you, the vacuform challenge, 🙂

The use of a wood chisel to cut the piece totally revolutionized my approach and saved me time and cutting quality..

I'm missing a lot of pieces to finish it.

Merci,

Very nice build! You got to love these desert schemes! A RSAF desert Tornado is on my wish list. Arif, to your knowledge: are these desert camo RSAF Tornados up to GR4 standard or more compareable to the German IDS variant? Some sources claim they are GR4 equivalent but most photo's I have seen contradict that (e.g. only 1 chin pod vs 2 for GR4). I tend to believe the photo's are correct. I got the same GR4 kit as you have planned and I believe it can be backdated to an IDS standard when needed. Thanks in advance for any info.

Thanks Tyu much appreciated. The GR4 kit has everything to build a GR1 which I think is most comparable to the IDS, I agree the reference photos I have seen make these camo Aircraft a GR1/IDS, they all seem to have guns so defo not GR4

Beautifully executed camo. Can You tell me what paints and color codes You've used?
I hopping to get something similar looking someday. I assume Revel Gr.4 is enough?
1  23 February, 10:14
Arif Saeed
Thanks Edgaras unfortunately this was built a few years ago and I can't recall exact paint used for sure but all paints used were by MRP. The Revell GR4 kit will be enough for GR1/IDS.
1  23 February, 13:58
Edgaras Jurkonis
Thanks Arif, I am mostly using AK real colors and already found two colors matching RAF standart. Light sand might be an issue though.
It's pitty Eduard GR.1 kit is sold out and at this stage there is no second hand ones on marker available either. I gues my only option is to go for Revell Gr.4 and try to source some decals from Mark.1 publications. I wish someone would release a nice decal sheet with various marking options for Tornados, especialy older Luftwaffe and Italian AF.

It ist the old Revell- kit! There Are some major-problems with the fitting in the back of the Cockpit. I had to remove planty material of the fuselage. Lukily the most Problems were on the bottom side!

The 1:350 is probably an error. I believe all the Pyro, Lindberg, Life-Like and Atlantis kits are 1:210 for the Monitor and 1:297 for the Merrimac. The boxes may say otherwise, but AFAIK they're all based on the original Pyro toolings from 1956. Makes it really tough to link their histories on Scalemates. 🙂
