Sorry guys, I accidentally deleted the album, but it's back with a couple of extra shots in it. Looks like Scalemates is none the wiser, too. 🙂

But I followed the other one. Now you need to build 2!

I'm no masochist, Nate. The seam line removal has taken every trick in the book. Some were fine with just plastic cement and sanding, others took some putty, and others took some superglue to fill gaps and divots.

I usually use acrylic putty, but I'm thinking I should have gone with some of the Tamiya putty that I have. The acrylic stuff is easy to use and doesn't smell, but it doesn't sand as well I don't think.

I like Tamiya putty. The excess can be easily removed with their Laquer Thinner.

That's something I didn't know! I'm putting that tidbit in the toolbox. Thanks!

Okay! The majority of the build is done. There are a few bits to complete (some pontoon like things that go under the shoulders) but not much in the way of a seam line slog. I should see if this has been retooled or redesigned since this '89 release and build that as a comparison.

Now, on to painting. The M4 tractor I just completed is blue, so I want to do something else. I asked for advice from my girlfriend (she's an artist and usually has a good color combo up her sleeve) and she said purple shades and yellow accents. I think that'll look really cool, with a main color of a dark purple, and then lighter accents and tonal variations if I can pull that off. The racing stripes are definitely gonna be yellow, and maybe I'll do a paint stripe down the center of his head.

Actually, she said "candy purple" and I said, "no thanks I have other builds I'd like to complete this century."

Mighty leader of the Blue Lobster folk, rise and free your kind from... whatever terrible fate it is just suffering...!

Looking good, I like the lines, I like the color... Will it receive some weathering or will it go ocean-clean?

Thanks Slavo! I'm dying at the blue lobster comment! I definitely will weather this bad boy, he's just screaming for it. And hopefully I can put it some sort of diorama with water coming out of the drainage holes.

Penguin, I just checked out some of your albums! Very nice! If you've got tips on creating tonal variations, which you seem to be GREAT at, I'm all ears.

Glad to see you like them, Paul! 😉
If you'll check discussion of my spitfire build, you will find lots of my
thoughts and sources of inspiration: Result | Album by rPenguin (1:48) That was really cognitive build for me.
As for main things, that I try to keep in mind, are:
1) try to use semitransparent colors for modulation
2) use several layers
3) don't use black for shading (and mixing colors), only if base color is grey or pretty close to it
4) I don't like classic preshading, so I try to use a whole darker base and highlight it gradually, so there will be no strict boundaries
5) mix colors from close colors if you can
P.S. As for Miyuki, you can call it cheating) It's still diffucult for me to achieve this result from the first attempt

The glue's not quite dry on the jetty yet, but the diorama is starting to come together. Boy, dioramas are addictive.

I want to add some beach scene items, like towels and a few umbrellas. I'd like the scene to read as if everyone was scared off the beach by something other than a shark, which happens very frequently on Cape Cod where I live. (There's even an app to get alerts on sightings.)

I was thinking about making some towels out of tissue paper and diluted white glue, and then painting them after application to the sand surface. For umbrellas, I thought a wire frame with more of the tissue paper. Do you folks have any ideas in that department? This is 1:144 scale, so a six foot towel would be like 8.5mm long...

Once that's done, RESIN POUR! Exciting stuff. 🙂

Well, in 1/144 I don`t think you actually need frame for umbrellas, just a central rod, you can paint dark lines on inside of umbrellas like there is a frame) What about surfboards or aqualungs? Or some vertical japanese flags?
12 August 2019, 19:38
Paul Juliano
LOL Bob! That IS a scary sight. No one person should have access to that much hair gel and self tanning spray.

Penguin: Surfboards! That's what I need! That's perfect, thanks. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the surrounding area, so maybe a kayak, too.

That might work with the umbrellas, good call. I could use stretched sprue for the pole and plastic sheet for the cloth part instead of tissue paper on a frame. Actually, your suggestion will probably be a heck of a lot easier. Thanks again!

👍 👍
I came up with more! You can make sun loungers, but it's probably difficult, because of their thin armrests and frame.
Heh, I figured out how not to make the frame on the umbrella and how to make the frame again for something else. 🤔

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm really hoping to enter this in Granite Con this year... Unfortunately most of my models would fall into the "sci-fi" category, so I'm going to be competing against myself quite a bit.

No idea why this has to go SCI-FI, my kids would happily testify they´ve seen precisely this dude on the beach several times, even had a chat with the pilot & assisted in fighting off a sneak attack of the Barracuda amphibious drone squadron, just all the other people ran away & apparently took no pictures... aaand left the sunshade umbrella in place😉
