A buddy of mine has had some great results with Alclad Chrome, sprayed over gloss black. I've not tried it myself yet, but I've seen pictures and it looks better than the actual kit chrome, by comparison. I still want to see it after a coat of clear though. Just throwing that out there, if you wanna give it a try Chris?

Thanks Bozz for temping a plastic addict with new things 😛 I bought the chrome and Glossy black primer... While I was there, I threw in the Boss and Papa even though I'm a sad broke gent... it's ok to use a credit card now and then right 🙂 Now we wait.... I'll get everything but the chrome in the meanwhile.

Alclad is the best. Remember to follow the directions on the bottles and do multiple very thin coats of the chrome, and ventilate! I got their Aqua Gloss too for the clear coat but I'm sure Future or some other clear would be fine too.

Well, I'm banking on Future as I already have it and I didn't put it in my purchase, BUT if Future sucks then I'll go get the Aqua Gloss.... Do you have pieces painted with Alclad chrome? pics?

Wow....pretty... I just bought vallejo gloss black, but haven't had any issues using acrylic under lacquer. Again we will find out and fix it if there's issues.

I used this truck too to test some skilss (wheathering, alclad, dirty engine..). Because it's a easy snap kit, I'd like to do what Special with it.

Thank you and you made me nervous 😛 , so I bought the Alclad base. Even though I haven't had issues in the past with acrylic and lacquer, it's best to just avoid the possibility all together.

It's the cheapest truck kit I've bought too. Only $20 from Hobby Lobby after their 40% discount coupon. Also, so far there hasn't been too much moulding to sand or any wacky issues to deal with. So that's good.

#3 Fun Fact -- This is only 30 minutes away from where I live. Also there is a Kenworth manufacturing plant 30 min away too..
I always get giddy when cool companies are based in my home state. Too bad the Kenworth plant doesn't do tours, That would be cool. Also a game I play American trucking sim, recently added Washington routes and cities, and the Kenworth plant was put in as a landmark... kind of neat.

@Chaz Well aren't you a lucky duck 😛
Question. What are handleable dry times with this stuff.
Alclad really does seem like good stuff from what I've seen. I just tend to shy away from products with special instruction because it's something else to fret about in the process to a complete car. But you guys like to poke the bear here on Scalemates 😛 It's been the biggest positive influence in my life 😄

Chris I'd definitely test the Future over the Alclad before committing. You don't *have* to top coat Alclad and every time I have, I watched the shine go out of it like a light turning off. I haven't tried their Aquagloss yet though. If I were you I'd leave it uncoated.

It dries pretty quick, that doesn't mean it's cured! Give it at least an overnighter, but preferably 24 hours (or more).

To be honest, I used Alclad 2, recommended by a friend. He advised me to wear cotton gloves when handling the model, both on base coat and top coat, because it loves fingerprints. He was right too. Once it's clear coated, everything is fine though.

Italeri trucks are good builds. Kinda like an upmarket AMT kit. My Revell Pete 359 was also a great kit, but it had tons of parts. It was the other kit to yours Chris. I still like the challenge of AMT though.

I think that Italeri trucks are just the bees-knees, you calling it an upmarket AMT makes me think differently.
Class exercise -
Take what you think are the top 5-8 auto kit brands and list them 1 - *, 1st is best, last is worst.
I've always been curious as to the different qualities. Bonus, why did you list them as x in the list.

My cunning plan is to replicate the Revell heavy hauler axle mod with a couple of the Kits I have, I have a resin moulding kit, and plan to make extended chassis rails (hence the Revell original kits) and moulds for extra Resin Wheels, Axles & suspension, plus I want to try to make silicone Tyres, then I can do triple and quadruple rear drive versions.
I think I will also grab one of these Monogram Tool kits, as I have a couple of full sprues of spare chrome parts like the long mudgards that I can dress it up with.

How do you do your 1500-12000 sanding without destroying the textures and panel line on the piece? Obvious answer would be avoid those areas, but then don't get sanded. Overthinking?

Buying these truck kits, is actually more addictive, than building them! I have my own wish list, but then a deal on a truck i haven't got, comes up and boom, it's mine! Thankfully, I only do American trucks, but there's still a lot out there, that I haven't got. On that note, Walmart have some kits in, for you USA guys. 30 bucks a pop, including the AMT construction dozer. Just a heads up😉

I think I finally understand sanding to a shine, even though it scares me to run through the paint. Now I just need to concentrate on the first part... several thin layers of color so you can sand without worry... I'm a bit fat fingered with the brush 😛 This truck won't have a shine probably, but I'll try... from here out I "should" get better with it.

(I have 1500-12000 wet/dry fabric sandpaper) I sanded 12000 wet, better sliding around the piece... Sanding after the paint is intimidating... I always run though... I just did one of these truck fenders, super lightly, and I didn't run through. I could see a mild shine. On the next vehicle I'll lay down plenty of paint so I can sand to a shine. But seeing a basic taste of it help me alot.

If you want to sand it with something finer than 12000, you can just hold it up in the air and waive it around.

Tom, Think you might need to Blame James C for that, he started it I think with his Kenworth W900 build, (that one cost me a few Quid too) then Chris goes and decides to start this Pete, next thing you know, someone's talking Unimogs. I'm still not talking to Bob Hall now that I've a got a huge Mustang box that doesn't fit anywhere.

#7 Painted the Alcad base for the chrome. The directions say to let dry overnight. Is that really the recommended, or can I get away with waiting 6 hours or something. I don't really know the properties of lacquer other than it sprays like silky heaven.

Tom ...
I would think 6 hours is fine. Of course I would imagine it depends on humidity and temperature. Maybe experiment with waiting 1 hour for some pieces and 6 hours for others and even 12 hours for a few more and see if you notice a difference.

You want lacquer to cure, here is the secret ! Take a space heater in the bathroom or the smallest room in the house, crank it up on high, (dries up any humidity) get it hot at you can in the room for about 4-6 hours. Then remove and let sit at room temp for a few minutes (I sit mine in front of a fan to cool it) after that your good to go. That is Exactly the process used on the latest Shelby in blue.

I leave it for a couple of days Chris. Where the base is on a bit thick it can take a wee bit longer to cure. Unless you are very controlled with the airbrush. If you look at Bob's work you can see he's a dab hand with an airbrush! I leave a margin of error that is pretty wide because I don't have Bob's skill level. Put t aside and get on with other details while it cures.

Just looked in the Papa and Boss boxes.... oh boy oh boy oh boy and a lot of pieces 🙂 Tires are perfect with pre printed Tyrone Malone name in white and no mid seems, and the decals are crazy! They make me smile (and twitch) And the plastic looks good from what I can see (looking through the bag). I Don't think I can wait, I'll order any paints I need, and get started on Papa Truck after the Peterbilt 359 🙂

@Chris So you are actually saying that those 2 trucks need to be in my stash 😛
seen the both on internet, but my wallet says no for now 😄
yesterday opened the Scania:Scania R730 V8 "Imperial" (Italeri 3883, 1:24)
And 2 pages are dedicated on all the decals that need to be placed lol, it's a very nice detailed truck.
And when I painted something, most times I wait for a minimum of 1 whole day to let it cure.
My house is always at a temprature of 22,5 Celcius and around 50% humidity 🙂

Oh man, that Imperial is SEEEEEEEEXXXY. I Love Italeri showroom trucks, so sharp and crisp. I almost bought that one, but I went with the Project 034 -- Scania R620 - Blue Shark | Album by chrisagreat (1:24) instead. #19 shows all the decals and chrome stickers.
And yes, Papa Truck and Super Boss need to be in your collection 😄 Thankfully they were only $35 each, instead of the $65 I paid for my showroom truck.

I wasn't happy I went through 20mg (I feel I used too much, I always have a heavy trigger finger) for these parts, but I'm sure to have several chrome bottles on deck... worth it!!!
Any clue why the lacquer was leaving the rear of the cup (green dot in pic) when I was moving the needle in and out. created a bloody mess. I've never adjusted or moved anything on my brush without any problems. Lacquer is aloooot thinner. Am I supposed to be tweaking the needle seal for each type of paint?

I'd get a cheap 10 bucks single action airbrush just for that lacquer, make things much simpler to clean up after.
You don't really need double action for that, same as clear coats.
The seals cope with most anything on short term usage.

But what about my airbrush. Should I be messing with the needle seal for different paints? How to stop the leaking? I am looking for greater general airbrush knowledge, what to do in this situation. I will probably get a secondary brush when I'm switching paints on a usual basis. But now it's just once in a while.

I think the lacquer is very nasty stuff for your O-rings if you don't have teflon in your airbrush.
Like Munkyslut says maybe get a cheap single action for it.
Normally O-rings need to replaced more often if you use enamels then when using acrylics

heh.. layers... I'm horrible on that... I always just spray with less pressure and just go until it looks like a solid color, taking a minute or two break until the sheen dries, and watch for paint runs etc... then when it goes on the dry block, that's usually it until build time... It comes down to a paint job that you can scuff up pretty easy when sanding. 🙁
It's going to be my biggest downfall in getting a good sheen... I don't do layers *YIKES* I know you need to do several good layers so you can do a good sheen after.

There is friction between the needle and the seal. This will cause the seal to wear. The relatively thick acrylic won't slip through, but the thinner lacquer can. Slightly tighten the screw which holds the seal in place. It is fine when you feel slight resistance, but still can move the needle without it getting stuck.
Alclad works best in thin layers. I also need to acquire that skill 🙁 The airbrush should be drinking less that way as well. Nonetheless, great result for a first attempt 👍

Yeah I'm a horrible layer laying guy, I just lightly (using air to flash dry if I get a bit much) continuously spray until it looks full bodied.
from Alclad: Apply 2-3 light coats. When completely dry finish with 2-3 coats of ALCLAD CLEAR BASE.
You don't need to wait a day between layers, just a few minutes... Overnight is for curing

I will be using Vallejo Gloss White for Papa and Boss.
Papa and Boss has almost identical color schemes, except a few colors, so I planned the schemes together. There are alot of colors and alot of colors I didn't have. It was a bit tough to keep track of what I have and the colors to order. I made a quick Excel to jot down what I needed to order for what letter of the scheme. And that's what this is. [img1]
The colors without brand info are all Vallejo (mostly Model Color) including the Gloss White, metals, and transparent colors (and whatever else).

I think part of it is that I do batch painting. I can spray down a color batch that has 30-40 pieces in it all at once, then touch up any secondary colors on needed pieces and bam a third of the kit is ready for building and set aside. Move on to next color batch, repeat, then finish with your clear coat batch.

I use a $20 ghetto blaster air brush with .3 needle. It came with .2 and .5 as well. For me the .3 has the Goldilocks effect of not too much, or too little, but just right. I never change the needle unless I ding it up, but Amazon has 5 needle/nozzle sets for .3 for only $10.

What are these tyres you speak of? 😛 Both the Kenny and Peterbilt have good treads on their tIres, I don't remember the wheel assembly process for the Kenny but the Peterbilt when together great. Had to widen the poorly made post holes in the rubber for the hubcaps and spacers to slide through. but nothing showing when you look at the assembled tIres.

The front lights give nice specular highlighting but you could do with more diffuse soft lighting to fill in the shadows better, and/or post process to soften the shadows.... but that's another hobby rabbit hole to go down... Nevertheless, the photos, as are, are really good! Another awesome truck, mate! 🙂

I'm not pimping out my photo booth (although I have some ideas) 😛 Like you said, that's another rabbit hole to go down. Although I think I'm going to stop using the top LED ring, or find a cheap voltage dimmer switch for it and splice it in.

Thanks!
The top of the engine says CAT, so wouldn't that be a yellow? Even though I ignored that too and chose a musty-tan anyways. 😄
