Primer done. 1 x mist coat and 2 x wet coats.

Sanded out the rough parts and added white primer. 1 x mist, 2 x wet. A little heavy in some spots, but hoping to sand it back. The bumper is now separate because I realised I needed to add primer to the piece behind it.

Album image #12
Radiator painted, PE'd, panel lined and cemented in place. This will be taped up when painting the body.

Album image #13
Base coat sprayed on with Tamiya TS-66. But before I did that I sanded back the front left section of the front bumper and filled in the two holes where the number plate is supposed to go because in Australia the number plate is positioned on the front grill. This was done using home made sprue glue from left over pieces of resin and Tamiya Thin Cement. Once dried the area was sanded smooth and the primer coats were applied and sanded even before the bade coat was put down.

Album image #15
First time building PE wheels from scratch. Each wheel is about 8 pieces of PE. Some of the smaller pieces unfortunately didn't make it, as you can see in the pics. There was options for these pieces and in hindsight I should have used the plane discs. Panel liner was added to the grooves and markings were added with a file.

Album image #16
Callipers sprayed with Tamiya Italian red, then clear red. Decals added, but still need to clear coat.

Album image #17
Album image #18
Album image #19
Clear coat added and callipers glued into place with CA glue.

Album image #20
Album image #21
Primed and painted with a Molotow pen.

Album image #22
Weathering and heat stains added.

Album image #23
Grey was painted with Tamiya TS-66 spray. Black parts were painted by hand with flat black acrylic. All silver was done with a Molotow pen which reached once the gloss clear coat was added. Wasn't expecting it, but I'm happy with the result.

Album image #24
Weathering and heat stains added.

Album image #25
Underside complete.

Album image #26
Additional weathering added to the muffler and exhaust. NOW it's complete.

Pedals done using part of the PE with the existing resin. I personally think this looks better than using the entire PE pedal set and folding it into shape.

Album image #34
Automatic gear shift, painted in flat black and Molotow pen, with PE at the base. Chose automatic for this model because it has the sports paddles on the steering wheel.

Album image #35
Handbrake ready to go.

Album image #36
Interior parts painted with Tamiya gloss black spray and then a flat clear coat. Detailing to come.

Album image #37
I will be flocking the interior flooring

Album image #38
Not happy with how this looks. Had taped it but it bled so then it was a matter of cleaning it up and getting it to what it is now.

Album image #39
Album image #40
Front grill with aftermarket PE

Album image #41
Seatbelt buckles painted by hand with Tamiya acrylics

Album image #42
Painted with Tamiya gloss black spray and then Tamiya flat clear. Didn't prime it as I don't have black primer. Didnt turn out as well as I'd hoped. Can still see through it when held up to the light and the tape bled all over the place, which had to be cleaned up with a toothpick.

Album image #43
Matt finish on the interior while the gloss black shows through the clear. I like this effect. Since doing this I noticed mold lines on the side windows. One on each side, both identical. Will possibly try to remove these with some Tamiya polish.

Album image #44
Roof painted in Tamiya gloss black and Tamiya clear. Got a bit carried away and put one too many coats of clear down, which led to orange peel. Also, the tape left residue which I had to pick off and it took some of the grey with it, so I'll need to touch that up too.

Album image #45
Can see the orange peel here. Will be sanding this back before applying white pearl.

Album image #46
Dashboard detailed and ready for decals. Mid section sprayed with Tamiya gloss black.

Album image #47
Dashboard completed. Not happy with my brush work of the silver.

Album image #48
Doors detailed with gloss black (which doesn't really show up in the photo) and Molotow chrome.

Album image #49
Removed some of that orange peel. First time wet sanding and polishing a paint job using the correct materials (micro mesh & Tamiya compound). I'm liking how its looking so I'm going to test the white pearl on some spoons before deciding to apply it. I keep hearing that it will just turn it silver instead of giving it a milky overtone.

Album image #50
Pearl added! I used SMS white pearl. First time using my airbrush. I only put a very light layer on to achieve the desired effect. Too heavy and I it would have turned everything silver. I then polished it with the Tamiya compound set.

Album image #51
Just enough fleck to get the look I was going for.

Album image #52
Album image #53
Focussed on the fleck.

Album image #54
Focused on the reflection. The finish is very smooth. Shame about the lighting. Probably could have waited until morning, but I was excited to show you all.

Album image #55
Flocking done using gunmetal embossing powder.

Interior completed.

That steering wheel is a lesson and a half. Makes me cringe.

Album image #60
Doors added.

Album image #61
Interior competed.

Album image #62
Exhaust tips added and additional weathering with Tamiya Waethering Kit D.

Album image #63
Album image #64
Attempt at heat stains using clear blue, clear orange and smoke acrylics and Tamiya Weathering Kit D

Album image #65
Album image #66
Wheels painted with SMS gunmetal and then SMS super clear. Aside from the pearl mist, this is the first time I've airbrushed a kit. Very happy with the results. Decals added with microset and microsol and a drop of Tamiya X-22 clear over each decal. Tyres worn down with some 600 grit.

What paint is that on the muffler? Shiny!

Nice work so far.

Thanks István! Rod, the muffler is Molotow pen. I may add some more weathering to it. The photo makes it look shinier than it really is though. Martin, I still have so much to learn! Peter H has been a great mentor.

I'd thin the silver out a little more Pete. Brushwork isn't the problem.

Just like airbrushing. Many thin layers is better than one thick.
The dash is gorgeous, and the roof is super shiny. You learn quick!

Thanks Martin, I'm really happy with how the dash turned out. I thinned the silver a little, but I should have added some more. Seems the metallic paints need a little more thinning than others. Admittedly I was painting at night while tired and rushed it a bit. The lessons I'm learning from every mistake are so valuable. Keep having to remind myself that it is only my second kit.

A trick with Vallejo metallic paints, is to pour into the airbrush cup a lot of thinner and then add some drops of paint, for a super thin mix, which is airbrushed on thin and dry, pausing between layers, which in turn creates a very fine layer of paint. I've tried this once, on top of more smooth glossy black paint. The thinner should help dry the paint (as opposed to using flow enhancer). Needle tip will probably require frequent cleaning while doing this, to avoid paint drying on the needle (but I am no expert).

Tint the windows and nobody will see the steering wheel 😉
Nice even performance, with little lows.

That is a quality build report, nice work👍 That interior embossing powder, what brand is this?

Thanks guys! Loving every minute of it. It's Ranger Embossing Powder. It comes in a variety of colours. This one is gunmetal.

thanks Peter, i can even find them around here. so it looks a good idea. what kind of glue you use to get them to stick to the model?
1 May 2021, 21:19
Peter Muldoon
1:1 mix of pva glue (aka wood glue/white glue) and water. The glue is quite thick and gummy so the water helps to spread it and also slows the drying time.

The seatbelt buckles, were they in the kit?

Martin Oostrom
Yeah, we need to buckle up for this ride!

The PE buckles were part of the kit. Kit also came with the sticky seatbelt material that you have to cut to size, but I didn't use that. The sockets (Hobby Design) and seatbelts (Scale Production) are after market. 🙂

This is going to sound stupid Pete but what has impressed me most is the interior black finish. Damn if it doesn't look EXACTLY like black leather! Looks superb! Now come and visit me and do my seat belts please!

I was refering to the sockets, yes. Was looking for generic aftermarket ones and finally found and ordered some from Spotmodel

There is a nice set of road car seatbelts from studio27. It spots seat belts in different colors, PE lock tongues and hinges and white metal buckles. A bit pricey but worth it (imho). Used it in my Porsche 959 build...

Alexander Grivonev
Yep, found it on Spotmodel👍 already ordered

Thanks Peter, this was the Tamiya TS-14 black with Tamiya TS-80 flat clear coat over the top. I was going for a semi-gloss black, but actually prefer how this turned out. I'll do your seatbelts for you, but stop trying to pass off my brilliant work as your own! ???
