Zhengdefu | 1:48 | Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II

Album image #1
2020/21: OOB build of the vintage '92 Zhengdefu 1/48 kit.

Album image #2
Oh... If only I'd known what I was in for at this point! Ignorance is such sweet bliss!

Album image #3
It's manufactured in the most awful plastic and nothing lines up - anywhere.

Album image #4
And again... It's manufactured in the most awful plastic and nothing lines up - anywhere.

Album image #5
One more time... It's manufactured in the most awful plastic and nothing lines up - anywhere.

Album image #6
Lots of work gone on here to get some sort of reasonable finish.

Album image #7
Did I mention?... It's manufactured in the most awful plastic and nothing lines up - anywhere.

Album image #8
Still fiddling and filling. Bet a Tamiya A-10 is lovely by comparison - hold on I have one of them in the stash! Why on earth am I bothering with this kit?

Album image #9
Filling, sanding, wedging, gluing and so on...

Album image #10
After a lot of primer, ha! ha!

Album image #11
The nose, engines and cockpit are particularly bad.

Album image #12
Finally it's beginning to get somewhere decent(ish)!

Album image #13
No longer looking (quite as) awful.

Album image #14
Still mucking about with panel lines and filling again, casms opened up when left on the desk overnight.

Album image #15
I'm just making this camo scheme up. I also discovered at this point that the decals are wonky!

Album image #16
Getting better...

Album image #17
It's beginning to come together. More paint, more paint and more painting.

Album image #18
BRRRRRRRRRRT!

Album image #19
Bombs away!

Album image #20
Added some red to tailfins - just because it gives it some colourful flair!

Album image #21
Armaments not looking too bad. Looks really glossy at this stage, will be dulling that down.

Album image #22
The mounting pylons underwing and undercarriage aren't great - these fought me a bit. The moulds are just 'weird' for the wheels!

Album image #23
I dipped the canopy several times, still not the best but much better than it was. Polished it etc. Got it somewhat better.

Album image #24
Ladder, panel line wash and all armaments are now added...

Album image #25
I actually rescued the kit at this point as I sprayed it with a Revell varnish too quickly before earlier applied washes had dried. It's much better than it was. But close-up there's still orange peel evidence.

Album image #26
And we're done! 🙂

If nothing else, it's always great to see a fully armed Warthog!

Album image #31
Album image #32
In retrospect I maybe should have added some exhaust 'dirt'.

Now where have I put my other kits of this iconic aircraft, the Tamiya, Monogram, Hobbyboss, Revell or Italeri ones? Until next time... Tbc...

Neil, that split through the center of the flaps
looks just like the one on the RevelloMonogram
kit. I kid you not. I wonder if they panogramed
that kit. The cockpit, I've never seen, but wouldn't
surprise me if it is a copy of the ESCI kit.
I believe they had some sort of affiliation with HobbyCraft
if, I'm recalling my history right.
You did a bang up job wrestling it this far.
Looks to be the worst over.

Hi Peppy! 🙂 Hope you are well. Thanks ever so for taking timeout to comment and offer your advice and knowledge. I must admit this is another kit I bought on a whim, just because it was cheap! I knew nothing about the manufacturer... I have discovered that it is made of just awful plastic - very malleable. Nothing fits, there are gaps everywhere, bits break, flash on everything, sink holes, the decals are a joke and unstable, etc and I'm not that skilled either... I won't say I came close to giving up, but almost... I have now completed it and got it to be my usual excuse of 'some sort' of representation of an A-10! - My son loved all the armaments, so that was good 👍 Proper album to follow... Thanks again 🙂

Celliers
Try the Italeri 1/48 A-10C Blacksnakes kit next time. It's a lovely kit, no fit issues, nice detail. I finished it recently.

Hi Celliers, thanks for your comment - will do! 👍

I actually have at least 6 other A-10 kits in my stash: Tamiya, Italeri, Revell, Monogram etc... For some mad reason; really just because I noted no one else had done it on here and on forums I'd read stories of people binning a Zhengdefu kit partway through also. I thought I'd give this kit a go first, lesson learnt! It was hard to stay motivated on this build as I was simultaneously building better manufactured kits at the same time.

Avoid this kit is my advice. I'll follow yours instead 😉 will take a look at your build also. 🙂

For an awful kit you've done a cracking job on it Neil! I've got the old Tamiya kit put away and intend to do the same paint scheme at some point.
Awesome job mate 👍

Hi James C, thanks everso. 🙂 For you guys to comment when you all produce such fantastic looking builds, it's really encouraging to hear such a thing from you.

I was also building my other recent uploads of the Mig-27, F-5 and Hawk at the same time - which was a much more pleasant build experience. So I must admit that with this kit in particular I almost trashed it partway through - decided I'd convince myself that it was a life lesson to try and turn this outta the box mess into something I'd be happy, though maybe not proud of! 👍 On to the next build - everything's a school day 🙂 Stay safe James 👍

Super clean build of one of my favorite aircraft. Try to forget the troubles you had with this kit! The result is top.

Album info

OK, so on a bit of a whim I thought I'd try a Zhengdefu build... This kit has fought me every step of the way! I have read online several times how terrible a Zhengdefu kit can be - particularly aircraft, but thought, what the heck I'll give it a go! Hmmm... they could be right, it has been a bit of a task!
