What have i started?

As a X-Mass gift, my girlfriends dad, who is a die hard table top gamer, gave me the Warhammer 40K starter box 'Dark Vengeance'. When i opened it, there was a envelop inside with a voucher, worth €150 at a nearby game store and a letter.

My dear son in law,

Instead of buying you another static model kit for your giant stash i dicided to offer you a Challenge.
This bow contaisn the basics that you need to play a tabletop gmae, you get the compact rules, rulers, templates, dices and 2 small armies. You can chose one off the two or if you wish you can chose any Warhammer 40K army that you like. I will know in time what you have chosen because i have spies.

Now for the rules for this challenge named 'Call To Arms'

- The time frame for this Challenge is 6 months.
- Chose a 40K army
- Paint your armie realistic, use your skills and learn new ones.
- On 25th of June i call you out for a battle, coordinates will follow.

So, get crackin', I want you to pick up your brushes and weapons and battle for YOUR future and OUR good cause. LOL

Actually he hates your guts... He wants a) to det you really frustrated with painting all those tiny figures and b) to kick your butt in the ensuing battle. Or this is simply a test for you, to see if you are worthy of his daughter. :-D Eitherway you are in a bit of trouble even if nothing of the above is true... You have to paint those tiny figures...

Well for the moment i have 39 figures of about 5cm and two medium ons from 10cm. And i'm planning to buy another 10 of the 5 cm height, a tank and two large creature something like 10 by 10 by 15 cm. I chose this army in the first place, because it is one of the 2 in the starter box, it's a pretty straight foward strong amry and ther color scheme is quite 'easy, i can start airbrushing the red base coat and a few highlights very fast. They need at least a basic paint scheme to play with because apparently there are guys out there that don't want to play with unpainted figures. For the rest i have six months to finish the job. It's quit hard starting painting figures but i think that once you get the hang of it. It are other techniques and i don't have to paint all my planned 52 figures.

For the moment my army plan goes as following :

1 HQ Aspiring Champion
3 squads (1x10 infantry, 1x10 cultist, 1x 6 elite)
2 Walkers
2 Heavy Supports

Total of 31 units.

The only thing i'm concerned about are the rules, the general rules, without the 'Fluf' a wopping 200 page, although with a lot of pictures, drawing, examples. And then you have to buy the codex for your army. But i'm already picking up a lot on you tube.

And then it's battling,. So in the official Games Workshop-store, downtown Brussels i can go play almost every day, the downside the slow public transport. The other shop, where i got the voucher form there they play only wednesday afternoon (so many school kids, lot of buzz) or saterday during the whole day (where probably 85% of the time my challenger will be present. Hummm.

Well we are now 5 weeks further, the painting gets along very good, i'm starting to get the hang of it. It is very different than painting and detailing an aircraft but i think it will sharpen my skills with the paint brush.
Concerning Game play, well i played a few and surprisingly I start to pick up it very fast. So let's see, still 14 weeks till the due date of this challenge.
