Thank you Spanjaard. The 1955 Indianapolis 500 pace car was a Chevrolet Bel Air convertible with a 265 small block V8 engine. The 1955 Bel Air pace car was significant because it featured a new small block engine design that became very successful.

Thanks Bob! I originally wanted to do it in wimbledon white with the blue stripes, but I was having a hard time finding good matches. I ended up using this source as an example for a detail work.

I own a 2008 GT500KR 40th anniversary I bought when I was home on leave from Iraq, but I'd trade it for an original 1968 in a heart beat ! I know the AMT kits kinda suck, as the molds are 40 something years old, the early 90's seem to be of a better quality! But if your looking for Mustang kits, I do believe I have the biggest stash of Mustangs here, just let me know what you are needing !

As a base for the red color, you need to use yellow, then the red will be bright. If you put red on white, you will get just pink.

@ Nicolas: I cross my fingers too. But looks like I have to do some homework before the final coat (see below 🙂 )
@ Denis: thanks for your input. I tested your suggestion on a scrab wing. With LP-7 I get a nice hue as well over white primer and pink base alike. Problem is that there is almost no difference between them. Over yellow (XF-3) the red receives a rather orange hue which I do not like for this project. But I am optimistic to finetune that and use lighter yellow or buff as base coat and see how that turns out. I'll keep you posted.
@Frank: So, se wollen erheben ne kleene GeBIER?!

Yes, I will be interested in what your red color will turn out to be. I recently painted small parts red, but there was a noticeable difference in color, depending on the color of the soil. Perhaps your LP-7 is better.

I tested a couple of base coat variations for LP-7. A nice combination in my eyes is achieved when using Mr. Hobbycolor H413 yellow as base for the darker areas and pink (Tamiya X-17) for the lighter ones. But that would have meant to redo the whole base paint. So I stuck to my combination and mourned the loss of contrast.

Really great job. I appreciate your approach.
I didn`t test different base color. I used GS Aquarius H23 at first piece at black surfacer, and it wasn`t fine. I will use gloss yellow at 2nd piece.
How did you do such perfect wing bottom side. It looks really nice. I had relatively big gap there and some residual step although I precisely brushed big material layer out from both wing half. Maybe, the used glue did a step at the end.
I thing, that this, wings bottom, is weakest part of this model although, as you ar writing, engine nacceles also need some attention.

I wonder, is it possible to buy a comprehensive set of kits for say WW1 warships, or are there some ships that never ended up as a scale model kit in say 1:700 scale?

High Treehugger!
There are a number of 1/700 kits on the market.
unfortunately most of them are made of epoxy and are quite rudimentary and expensive.
However, compared to the World War 2 era, there are much fewer.
Luckily there are more and more every year.

Looking good so far! I have the item on order, also planning to build a RAF Polish sqn from it, 315 in my case. Curious about your comment: What's wrong with the canopy? According to the manual a Malcolm canopy should be included?
Did you consciously choose the rear wheel bay color to be the same as the rest of the interior? My references show a zinc chromate yellow (e.g. Tamiya XF-4) for the rear wheel bay…

Thanks Robert! I had such a fun time with this kit. In fact it is already finished but I want to share some in-progress pictures. It went together smoothly without any issues. Japanese aircraft of WWII had never really interested me until a few months ago. Now I am on fire and discover a long neglected area of great kits, cool markings and very interesting historical facts 😄. That is one of the great pros of our hobby - it never gets boring.

All the build (exept for the 3d printed steel ropes and the headlight glasses) is finished and ready for painting. This is my first CSM kit and I have to say I am deeply impressed of the quality of the instructions, historical chapter, fit of all the parts. This build was one of the most comfortable I did so far and everything fell together as easy as a stroll in the park. The resin figures had a few bubbles in some arms to fill but nothing worth to worry about. I am very looking forward to paint this exotic multi color camouflage now!

Dude... I just brought it up because its PRIDE tanks. Which have GAY flags on them. And i dont even make being gay a part of my personality if you mean by that in the "it gets old having to see this brought up in every aspect of our society" infact i try to hide it because i similarly dont like people who make their sexuality a part of their personality. In my message legitimately 3 words were about me being gay. And you cant tell me "oh pride is everywhere its so overwhelming" well it isnt for me. I havent seen a drop of pride or even a gay person in estonia for at least 8 years, even on the internet the most pride i see is my boyfriend posting a pride tiktok.
If your so angry about some people mentioning they're gay then maybe its time to go outside and touch some grass

@Rick P Nobody here really cares about your opinion. Why dont you go to make your own group with your people in it and leave people enjoy this hobby and what they like/want. Its a model he built, on his time, with his money and so on. He can paint it whatever the f he wants, ITS AN HOBBY. Nobody forced this on you or anything else so you can just keep your frustration to yourself. Seriously, let people enjoy what they want. If its something you dont like, you can scroll away and so on. Peace. Let people enjoy what they like.

I see loads of models of half naked women on Scalemates which to me is suggesting a sexual preference. I haven't seen you complain about those Rick. I don't like the models depicting young girls in provocative clothing. I don't complain about them because that would highlight the thing I don't like by sending it to the top of the newsfeed.
Gay was mentioned once before your comment and this is the first time I can remember 'Pride' colours being used on a model shown on Scalemates, so it's not exactly taking over is it?

Thanks for the positive comments everyone. I could delete Rick P's comment, but I don't like censorship, as a queer person I've been censored a lot in my life so I don't think I want to play that game. I will say that it's interesting that Rick thinks he has the right to express his opinions in whatever way suits him, but us queers should shut up and 'stay in the bedroom..' Nah mate, you're OK, I'll do what I want, you do what you want, it's a free country and all that.

gorby, thank you for that I agree with you, and isn't there a company that make strange Japanese hentai style schoolgirl figures in sexualised poses? I admit I thought this album might attract some contempt but I was a bit surprised anyone would bother to actually express that in the comments, I mean, if you don't want to see it, don't look, it's simple enough. I have no intention of bringing sexual imagery into it, and the first person to talk about that was the person who is so annoyed with this, so that's a bit strange. Anyway, the next one will be the Trans flag, and I will be adding photos here... And Robert, thanks, that is so cool, I am definitely considering doing a tank biathlon diorama now!!

The Amtronic is the car of the future as AMT thought it would look like back in 1969. AMT created this iconic concept model kit after a Detroit car show. The Amtronic is actually two vehicles in one. The two-place forward section could separate and travel on its own. For longer trips, the rear "station wagon" module would attach to the forward section for significantly more capacity. The Amtronic has aircraft-like retractable wheels. For longer range transport, this vehicle would engage a magnetic rail system that would allow the car to be propelled several hundred miles per hour. The car would generate its own lift thrust using two turbine-powered lift fans while engaged on the magnetic rail system.

Thank you Gorby and Robert Podkonski! I bought this at model swap show this past spring. Just had to have it. The only difficulty is that with retractable wheels, I have no way to keep them in the down position. Still not sure how to pose it on the shelf. I recently added some photos with the mag-lev track.

Thank you Ben M and Bozzer. I saw another one for sale at our local IPMS Chapter in Lorain Ohio Sunday. I do like the futuristic stuff. Bozzer I did check out Ollie's and only found a good selection of Atlantis models. I will have to keep checking for those trucks you mentioned. atlantis-models.com/

Curtis, definitely keep checking. I believe that Walmart have some kits at Christmas too, though I've never seen them at my old local store. But definitely, Ollie's have them around this time. Last time, I got the Ratfink International and the trailer, for $20 a pop. I've also had the KW123, International 4300 and the AMT Chrome tanker trailer, all for $20 a pop. It's definitely worth checking out. 👍

Thank you Mr D. Magnetic levitation, is a system of transportation that suspends, guides, and propels vehicles, predominantly trains, using magnetic levitation from a very large number of magnets for lift and propulsion. The highest recorded speed of a maglev train is 603 kilometers per hour (374.69 mph), achieved in Japan on 21 April 2015; 28.2 km/h faster than the conventional TGV speed record. Maglev trains exist in Asia and include Central Japan Railway Company's superconducting maglev train and Shanghai's maglev train, the oldest commercial maglev still in operation.

Thank you Dominik Weitzer and Mr D. If you should build one of these kits use tape to keep the doors closed when positioning them and replace the pins of the wheels with some small screws.

Thank you Mr D, Christian W, and Spanjaard. Outside of Disneyland and Disney World with the monorail I have not been made aware of magnetic levitation vehicles. Even now it seems futuristic, but this model was made in 1969. Incredibly visionary.

Japan has several maglev trains, including the Linimo line and the SCMaglev system:
- Linimo line
This 9 km train in Aichi Prefecture runs from Fujigaoka Station in Nagoya to Yakuza Station in Toyota. It has a top speed of 100 km/h (62 mph).
- SCMaglev
This superconducting maglev system is being developed by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and the Railway Technical Research Institute. It's planned to be used on the Chūō Shinkansen rail line between Tokyo and Nagoya. The SCMaglev uses electrodynamic suspension (EDS) to levitate, guide, and propel the train. The L0 Series, a prototype vehicle based on SCMaglev technology, holds the record for fastest crewed rail vehicle at 603 km/h (375 mph).
Japanese Maglev Train: World's Fastest Bullet Train - JRailPass
The SCMaglev system is expected to revolutionize travel times in Japan. The Chūō Shinkansen is planned to connect Tokyo and Nagoya by 2027, and then extend to Osaka by 2045. Once completed, the line is expected to reduce travel time between Tokyo and Nagoya to 40 minutes, and between Tokyo and Osaka to 67 minutes.

Nice project, they used 3wheel trucks like these at Cadburys factory as they need tighter turning circles round the plant.

Their turning circle was one of the reasons they where so successful. Do you have any association with Cadburys - other than eating their products of course. 🙂

One interesting thing to have in mind is that Gorby set to build the ancient 1962 tool of the Scarab and scratch the Mechanical Horse precisely when there appeared recent (and immeasurably better, as for the Scarab - I guess) 3d-printed 1:72 kits of both the Scarab and the French relatives of the MH (i.e. FAR tractors)... But that's Gorby (much to our delight!) 👍

I think they were built at Scammell Lorries Ltd in Watford.
In fact there is now a road in the area called Scammell Way.
Typical of Britain, close the factory and name a new road after it to remind us that we used to actually make stuff. 🙁

Great progress and entertaining narrative 🙂. The trailer wheels turned out nice, I can't imagine making something like that. Just curious: why not make one and cast a copy (I think you have done that in the past)? Or does this have to do with that logical thing…

Thanks for the comment mates. 🙂
Lex: Yes this is from the old Airfix kit. Quite enjoying the build so far - although that's probably because most of the build is scratch work. 😄
Alec: Typically the trailer wheels look like a different size to the other wheels in the kit which is why I had to cobble something together rather than cast them. I've been meaning to try and scratch wheels for a while so it was also a bit of an experiment. Hopefully future ones will be better.

Like what you have done so far, good thinking on utilising items , l always look at a item before l throw it away to see if it could be useful.
My fire extinguisher handle was just offcuts laying in my scrap tub., ps it finished now will photo tomorrow.
Your right...a MC Donald's or frozen pizza box would be bit out of place 🤣 Fire ash, tin cans, spud peel n bit of dog poo most likely 😄.
Quite rewarding the scratch build l imagine.

At the moment it's very enjoyable project. It's helping to keep my grey matter from seizing up completely, working out how to make something from a pile of bits.

Also if you don't mind me asking, what operation did your missus go through? Having to administer blood thinners sounds pretty serious.

Yeah really cool. I like to add X-22 also. Seems to help it spray better and be a bit more transparent of course. I also find I can decal without a gloss coat usually too. Then I put on a flat coat.

Chees Ben... I use X22 mostly to ensure the colours are fully saturated and don't change when overcoating with varnish.Transparency I tend to control via reducing the paint more (ie adding more thinner) but it certainly assists with paintflow... Have fun bud... Don't just collect those models...! #nightshift

I find adding too much thinner gives me spiderwebbing so if my paint gets too thin I add a little x-22 to thicken it up while preserving the transparency. I'm enjoying watching your post shading technique.

Cheers Michael... Yeah opted for bright and cheery on this one... I know it's far from accurate but it's pretty close to one of the reference photos I was using... The brighter the better... Once you take you model out from u per the work lights all this hard work tends to disappear...

Cheers Mr D... I'm a little concerned over AK's Enamel's shelf life... I think that goes for most modern Enamels though... But they seem to work nonetheless... I do use ammo nut only they're Enamels too... Not heard of ICM paints... Don't think we get them here... Cheers for the props mate... Happy modelling...

Nice collection of WTF box arts 🙂. To be fair, majority of them are from the ancient era (60's/70's/80's) of modelling, nobody focused that much on what's on the box back then (but there were also really nice looking artistic pieces from those times that I remember). I'll try to find some newer (90's and onward) box arts that I consider a "failed mission in marketing" - this one is a nice example from 2021 --> Saab TF-35 Draken (Skale Wings SS-72001, 1:72), and this one a bit older (2003), but also has a high WTF factor --> Messerschmitt Bf-109E 3/4 "H..tenkrad (Academy 2214, 1:72).

Aaaaaand my favourite:
PZL P-23 a Karas (RUCH MK006, 1:72)
PZL P-23a (Coopexim , 1:72)
PZL-23A Karaś (RUCH , 1:72)
PZL P.23A Karaś (PZW , 1:72)
which one do you like most? 😄
Don't you dare look at the contents - what's most unbelievable: the same moulds are used now to produce "new" kits:

Yes it bugs me when classic box-art is altered to remove any sign of unpleasantness. This is an ideal example.
Superfortress (Airfix 07001-4, 1:72)
Boeing B-29 Superfortress (Airfix A07001, 1:72)
One is full of action and the other is dull.

Very interesting collection of boxart. 👍
There is a reason for the shape of the boxarts made in the Soviet Union. The incompetence of the Soviet industry and the political situation influenced the creation not only of boxarts, but of entire kits produced in the former Soviet Union. Lousy boxarts were defended by claiming that the attractive color pictures on Western boxarts were just capitalist tinsel and bourgeois detailism. And a socialist doesn't need such things.
The model's box was made of poor quality cardboard with mostly two-color printing. From the modest Cyrillic inscription on the box one could read that the box contained a kit of model aircraft number xxxx, or at best, even more accurately, that it was, for example, a fighter aircraft. The instructions for building the model were printed on stiff paper, which could be successfully used as sheet metal. It contained only pictorial instructions for building the model. Any detailed information (colours, camouflage, what kind of machine it was and where it was used...) was missing. In most cases, decals were also missing. In some kits the decals were replaced by stickers. Most of these kits were pressed by the leading company Frog, which was acquired by the Soviets in the second half of the 1970s.
Curiously, the same models, but intended for the Western market, were produced under the NOVO brand. The quality and content of these kits were comparable to the original FROG kits.

Decals for the canopy are simply the worst. I hoped to avoid masking the canopy, but after having most of the decals down with horrible fit, I think about how to get them clear coated without dulling down the canopy? Masking maybe... so I am seriously considering removing the canopy decals and going the normal way.
What are your experiences with these canopy decals? Did anybody use them?

Think you mean the "skunk stripe"?
I would always advise to mask those - looking at the last pic I would try to remove and mask, those look really uncooperative...and if you apply tape over these decals for protecting the canopy eg I think it would create a real mess when removed🤔

@Skyhiker The kit has decals for the canopy itself. There is a black decal that is intended to go over the front and the windshield, then there are two stripes that go alongside the clear canopy and three across. And then there are two (or three, the manual is not very clear about that) decals for the black area behind the canopy. All these are intended to go over surfaces that are curved in multiple angles.
@Daniel My thoughts exactly, the tape would make a mess out of these decals.
So... I removed the canopy decals (worked pretty well) and will mask the canopy and the "skunk stripe" for airbrushing. Let's see how that goes 😉

Ahh, now I understand what you mean. Yes, that's a simple paint job. You could use decal softener but it's probably not worth the time or effort, because the painting is faster and will give you better results.

@Skyhiker you are right on that.
One thing I learned from this kit is, that the panel lines in the manual and on the model itself have nothing to do with each other. Makes placing some stencils kind of guesswork.

Mental note to myself: Don't use those decals! 😂 The painted skunk stripe looks way better Mattes. Overall, I think you did a splendid job here! Especially considering that somebody else already built it and you're stuck with his/her craftsmanship.

At least I managed to take some time and add all the missing small antennas and the centerline tank. As the AIM-9X Sidewinders came damaged with this ebay-find, I think I just leave this one without missiles or pods, just with the three tanks.
I also did some tests to maybe shoot some better pictures someday 😉
