OK, I'm already hooked, from the very first pics... One can never get bored watching Greg's projects...

Heh. The funny thing about this one, is that I bought what I thought was a Airfix "emergency support vehicles" box at a hobby show, but it turned out to be just parts... and none of the really good ones. When I looked at the water tank bits I thought "hmm... that looks a bit like a train..." and here we are.
The really sad thing is that I bought the box two years ago, had a coffee at the show and dug through my purchases "just to take a quick look" and discovered that there was basically nothing but cut up sprues in the box. So I took it back to the vendor and he gave me my money back... and then threw it back on the table. I guess it didn't sell, because the next year, at the same show, I forgot and did the exact same thing... only I didn't stop for the coffee because my son wanted to leave. So when I took a good look at it at home... GAH!
Oh, well, fool me twice I guess... at least I'm going to make SOMETHING out of it.

LOL! 🙂 And... now that you mentioned it, I should have recognized the Austin K6 water tank from the Airfix kit (I recently purchased it), but at first glance you fooled me, I did "see" part of a locomotive. I also have the RPM Ford T ambulance - so I'll watch this with great interest... Good luck, have fun - this is gonna be another awesome Tintin scene! 🙂 [BTW, your audience patiently awaits for progress on the 2CV - and the Dakota crash!)

That Ford-T is so cute😉 Does the little locomotive also emit steam? A steam generator from model railway + steam oil should fit.

Haha! I never thought of that... hmm...😉 For this one, I'll likely do a bit of a "put-put-put" cloud out of cotton...

Model steam generators are 12V stuff, would not work on your 5V supplies...

Thanks Alec. Man, I was furious at getting taken in two years in a row... but it never occurred to me that the guy would just throw the box back on the "for sale" table. Who would do that? or... at least put a note on it... or something. Oh, well. This project got sidelined temporarily, but it'll be back on track soon... choo choo...

It is a pretty cool story, if a little odd that a trader would sell junk in a box without marking it, then go back to the same show the year later. Model shows tend to have the same attendees year after year. Although I have to admit having bought a kit in a charity shop, only to find it was mostly made (badly). I should have checked, but it had a bottle of revell contacta in there that I am still using, and was worth what I paid for the kit, so no foul. I checked the contents the next time though, and avoided buying a 2 Car double pack with no Bodyshells.

On the flip side, I ordered a 1/144 B-17 from Japan via Buyee.com. It was listed "as is" and in one of the pics it showed a wing missing from the sprue but two wings were clearly visible in another pic, so i took the plunge because it was a good price. When the box arrived, I was pleasantly surprise to find not one, but TWO B-17 kits in the box... with one missing the upper left wing half. Luckily, having one complete kit, I made a resin copy of the missing piece. It's not perfect, but certainly good enough, all things considered.

Lucky you! 👍 If it's only a missing wing you could also graft it from laminated plastic sheet sanded to shape. Wouldn't that be even easier?
