I like having a 3D resin printer. 😉
Nothing really to report from the WIP though. Print, putty, sand, paint, homemade decals… done. 😉

Ah! And I was wondering what was the tiny airliner in some of the Tiger Moth wip-pics... (looking out for what else is brewing on Greg's workbench is one of the pleasures of watching his shows!). Nice little one! 👍 👍

Nice dramatic model! I like this part of the story where the business plans of Kanzaki backfires. Is that genuine Maxwell MB-14 or just similar airliner?

Hah Alex! I know you're always on the lookout for "easter eggs" on my modelling work bench. 😉
S M - Thanks. Obviously there's no real MB-14 so I've used a B-767 as a stand in. I did a bit of research and decided that it was the most likely candidate, given the timeframe of the manga (chapter "Prelude to Collapse published October 1980). The 767 didn't fly until 1981, but the only other candidate would be the A310 and the profile of the twin-engine airliner matches the 767 more closely. It makes me wonder what kind of research Kaoru Shintani did, because if you look at the planes in service at the time, there's not many of them that look like the MB-14.

I've got plans to recreate this scene in more detail (with LED lights for explosions) using the Zvezda 1/144 scale 767. Also, semi-related is the Honichi Times news chopper that covers the accident - AREA 88: Bell 206 Jet Ranger (Honichi Times) | Album by strobez (1:72)

Spanjaard - Yes. Completely printed. I've got a Longer Orange 30 (longer3d.com/product..-30-resin-3d-printer) and I'm pretty happy with it. I was able to get a lot of airplane 3D models off Thingverse - supposedly for table top gaming, but enough detail at 1/700 scale for sure.
Also, thanks Roland. Don't worry, there's plenty more of these "bottlecap battles" coming. 😉

OK, now... a DC-10 and 2 Kfirs in 1:700... would be, I assume, a... scale model of your already completed 1:144 project?! Damn, Greg, you never cease to find new ways of having modelling fun! 😄

finally got around to finishing a few of these bite-sized projects. There's now four… the (fictional) Yamato Airlines MB-14 crashing into Tokyo Bay due to corner cuts on safety and maintenance; The two inverted Kfirs shooting a bomb off the underside of the MacGregor Airlines DC-10; the close call between the Yamato Airlines B-747 emerging from the clouds and Shin's F-5E; and the sinking of the Project 4 submarine by a well-placed S-3 during the final attack on Tanduria.

Unfortunately, I didn't do a good enough job suspending the sub in place before I did the resin pour, So I had an emergency situation with a floating nose. I managed to get it back in place before the resin set, but the end result seems to have been a huge bubble that formed along the hull. You can see a bit of it on the nose, but luckily most of the worst of it is along the backside. That's why I decided to sand it to make it a bit "foggy" and hide the issue. It was my first time trying to pour a block of clear resin, so I'm reasonably happy with the results.

Part of the issue (I think) is the weird resin A+B ratio. I'm used to 1:1 ratios... or at least some easy math ones (3:100) by volume, But the instructions on this one were obviously for pouring clear resin over flower petals to make some nice coasters. The ratio was in "inches in height" - which made no sense to me at all. And it was also a sliding scale, more hardener at the beginning, but less as the pour gets "taller" - so pouring a volume that large (and a height of about 7cm) was a real guessing game.

I should also mention that the "waves" on the top were accomplished by using some clear silicone. I've used that technique on several projects (including the 1:700 scale crash and burn MB-14 project here) to great effect.

Fantastic - Although I think they are really 1:144 next to your giant paint pot you use to pass of your 1:48 scale models as 1:144 🤪

Thanks Łukasz! for the resin block, I just used a clear two-part resin with a bit of Tamiya clear blue and green for colouring. It wasn't without its challenges though. As you can see from the comments above, I didn't secure the sub nearly well enough and had a bit of an emergency to deal with. It wasn't completely successful...and if I run across another 1/700 scale submarine I might give it another go. 😉
