The aircraft on which Captain Lanoe G Hawker engaged in three separate engagements with enemy airacraft on July 25th 1915, forcing one to retreat, one to make a forced landing, and one shot down in flames. For these actions Lanoe was awarded the Victoria Cross, the first for true aerial combat.
