How do you deal with painting the decks darker, yet having photo etch railings added?

I am but a beginner with ships, but the way I thought I'd do with, would be to glue on the photo etch railings, then paint the deck darker, then mask the deck, then airbrush the railings and the rest of the ship's sides/structures.
I don't want to glue on pre-painted photo etch railings, maybe because I like doing some additional work on the railings after gluing them on, like adding putty and sanding them more flush in places.
