Thanks S M & Moreno for your nice comments. Yes it was a bit of a masking challenge. Fortunately I'm one of those weirdos who actually likes masking.
Beautiful model in cool presentation! And thanks for the link to brexitmodeller.
Thanks very much Neuling. 👍
Incidentally Brexitmodeller changed its name to All Scale Modeller, unfortunately the links still show the old name. Also, the old name was nothing to do with Britain leaving Europe, it was supposed to be a joke about splitting from Britmodeller, which sort of back-fired.
Thanks for your comments mates, I'm glad you like it. 🙂
I've added some photos of how I made the masks.
An excellent build and even more excellent saga with the retro Spit build. Congratulations on winning the prize btw! I could not stomach burning my build for ANY reason (likely due to the fact that when I did it as a kid in our kitchen and left a greasy black spot on the ceiling, I have received a commensurate reprimand). I like your mask cutting setup, seems very effective 👍
Thanks Alec. 👍
I had to torch the Spit Alec, it was Starfix so it was asking for it. 😄
I did similar masking on a 1/72 Lightning! Also loved doing it, very satisfying when it turns out as beautiful as this plane. What a cool design.
Lovely work! Much patience, perseverance and I suspect 1/72 'chequered' eyesight was undertaken to gain such a deserved result.👏👍
Very nice build and outstanding paint and mask job! Congrats, mate. 👌👍👌
Thanks Vincent & Bernd and for the people who have clicked 'like'.
It did make me wonder if it would be possible to do the same in 1/144.
Maybe I should be sectioned for my own good. 😄
😄 😄 😄
I think I'll wait a while to see if I can get over that particular madness. 😉
Album info
Let me tell you a story, not my usual 14,000 word epic, I've taken pity on you so I'll keep this brief.
I won this kit as a prize, which gave me a tiny problem as I'd recently become allergic to swastikas.…..what to do, what to do… Unusually for me, the answer was to take it seriously.
Looking around for an alternative scheme I found one in Finnish racing colours. It just happened to be the most complicated scheme I found. What a surprise. No decals exist in 1/72 as far as I know and even if there were, I'm too tight to buy them so all the markings are done with home-made, hand-cut masks.
Utti ai base had a mid-summer festival open day on June 23rd 1950. It held an air show, at which participated a total of twelve 109's (Mersus). It ended in an American Reno style air race around poles with four specially marked planes. MT-508 was plane B and at the controls was luutnantti Arvo Arima. I think only one photo exists so details are sketchy. I've included the photo on the base. It's believed that the aircraft had special markings on the left side only – thankfully. It was painful enough doing just one side.
I didn't do any weathering because as a racer it would proba…..who am I trying kid. I didn't do any weathering because I couldn't be arsed.
