Sopwith Schneider - Racer Monaco Trophy version
Filled with lead (bad solder alloy)
sides are planked.
Bend with steam.
Final work not yet done.
Paint removed to add wooden strips fro easier ground handling.
Sanded in form and painted, the new lower side looks better.
Basic form created with plywood.
Veneer on lower surfcase
Veneer bend with steam glued around the float
Tail float finished.
Later it will look like this.
The kit offers many options, every Schneider seems different
Wing (with warping, so no need to cut ailerons) primed.
Masking and shading, upper side.
Lower side
Linen color on lower side, in real it looks different. Was not able to show the right colors in photo 🙁
Upper side.
Racing numbers applied with cutted masks.
Evergreen helps always
The Racer was thicker for the bigger 100hp engine.
A new wooden seat.
0.7mm steering wheel + nickel silver self made "PE", brass failed.
Wood primer improve the look ...
for the steering wheel too
A wooden framework inside
And a internal rigging, 0.1mm nickel silver + 0.3mm brass pipes
A wooden floor made of 0,5mm veneer!
Nearly in scale, paint improves the look again
A little preview into the future
Wooden dashboard
10 parts are glued and painted, 36 (+ spares!) are painted.
46 kit parts are forming this wonderful little 100h.p. rotary engine!
Another wooden part need, some holes to make it lighter
Hand milled from back side with ball cutter, for better illusion.
Raw form aof soldered brass parts
Looks nice now, prepared for mounting.
Last view, the remaining parts are mounted later from above or front.
Fuselage closed.
Modified front wall and a turned bushing for the engine.
Elevator cut out, new hinges created.
Started the alu plating, top side with the first rivets.
Adaption work on the wooden struts to the floats. Already two brass pins holds the fuselage.
Self made PE with nickel silver "bolt", 8 fittings needed.
Struts glued in place, finally painted and 8 fittings mounted.
View from below.
Every fitting is mounted with 4 nickel silver 0.2mm "bolts", the 4 front fittings are slanted.
Engine wall/undersurface plated, side walls crimped.
Glued wooden strips (bend with steam) in edges.
Wooden tool to allo work on outer surface.
Side walls mounted, more wood added.
The engine fits and can rotate freely!
View from below, will stay open.
Not much space between valve and wall, but nothing touches.
Some work on the airscrew, only a raw shape until now.
Bend a brass stripe, slotted and bend in the middle.
A steel part help to keep the fragile part straight.
Soldered brass to the front, a new bearing (the first try failed) and a fuel cap.
Tinned and chemical browned to keep the details.
Bearing on top of the holder.
Holder mounted to fuselage and stabilize the ears, bearing will be added later with engine
Prop has reached the final shape, but needs to be darker. Brass is missing too.
Struts for the winggs prepared.
Looks much better with primer and varnish.
Rivets added, wing mounting holes reopened.
Also the other side, fuel nozzel added.
Some tries with different alu foils. Left down nearly usable but cracked.
This one will be used, from 0,15mm "Prägefolie" alu sheet.
Test fit on fuselage.
Started to prepare the tail, e.g. brass outlets for control wire.
Need a bigger rudder on the race biplane.
More details on rudder, prepared for paint now
Primed white
SOPWITH V1.0 ...
Don't liked the result ... letters to thick
Paint removed and lathing added
SOPWITH V2.0
I think, I can live with it now.
Tail float and struts added.
The water rudder is made from brass in a slotted pipe.
Control wires added, so the tail is finished. Only some fittings are missing.
Some dry fitting - will look like this one day ...
PE stiching and leather paint
Some mechanics for control wire of wing warping.
Two of them + more metal fittings.
Wing struts got also metal
Struts mounted, please note sockets.
Fittings added to tail float
Rigging starts with preparation
Struts rigged.
Upper wing mounted and rigged from below.
Lower wing added, followed by struts.
Wing rigging complete.
A strut to the floats failed, but not a big deal to replace it.
Day light pics.
The cross wise rigging on floats is missing.
Float rigging in the making
copper ignition wires.
Engine mounted
Some struts added on lower side
Cowling and tensioning strap added
Airscrew painted and mounted
Hub parts "bolted", position is correct (airscrew was borrowed from another team)
Prop decal added, 1:72 used - the 48 one was to big
From below the engine is visible well
Scratched pitot
browned and 0.2mm lead wire added
mounted
St Valentine's Day - flowers added!
weathering added with oils and pastells
only a clear coat, may be a bit smoke will follow
This will be the final place in glass cabinet, beside the other Tabloid called Lebed.
"Flowers", some green foam with colorful parts on top.

After two years of inactivity I restarted the project to build the Sopwith Schneider, the winner of the Monaco seaplane race April 20th, 1914.
The two wooden main floats have now wooden strips for easier ground handling.

Thank you Torben!
As I mentioned there are no decals available for the Racer. But a friend jumped in and offered to help - he created masks on his cutting machine 👍 Since X-mas I own such cutter too, so it is another important reason to finally use the provided masks! So the racing numbers are applied to the wings.
Thank you Torben!

Thank you Erik! Sometimes I NEED to work with wood, this project was a long time on the ToDo list and the floats are done long ago. Additionally a friend cut the masks for me on his electronic cutting machine - so I was forced to put the Albatros aside and really start this project.

Absolutely stunning - the level of detail in relation to the size of everything; I'm just gobsmacked... just beautiful. Everything in the pics; just incredible. Inspiring.

What a feedback! Thx Hans and Tom! Hans, the engine will look better after a oil wash😉 This project is somehow a repetition of my "Lebed" project, which is was a russian copy of a Tabloid, on wheels. And this Schneider is a Sopwith Tabloid with 100hp engine on floats, and the win of the Monaco Schneider Trophy was historically important for the company Sopwith.

Thank you mates and a warm welcome to the new visitors!
@JD, I hope a bit more of encourages? At least I hope to give some ideas😉
@Norbert, here is no kit of the Monaco Racer in 48 available, but with many differences to the later production float plane. The advantage is, that this is a unique model. I guess if I'm done, somebody will release a kit.😉

Your reproductions of early 20-th century (although some say the 19th century only truly ended in the flames of 1914-18 - a thought I really like) materials and DIY assembly techniques is extraordinary as such, but provided the sizes involved, it's really a craftsmanship achievement - to scale everything down, including all the different surface & texture structures - top 👍
however... I've seen relics of heresy on picture 14 - one wielding 2 blades, the other equipped with a full four... Will you use one of these, or are we in for a full wooden reproduction?😉 😄

Thank you mates for your kind words!
Slavo, picture 14 is only to show all the options provided by the kit. Both airscrews do not match, because after some trouble with the engine, the Sopwith team borrowed an airscrew with smaller diameter but higher pitch from another team, as advised by engine manufacturer.
More soon!

Thank you mates! Evgeny, I hope to finish it until end of January.
After a long research I discovered the mounting of the front bearing of early Tabloids and this Schneider.
For the later ones there is a nice picture: [img1]
But the racer is different: [img2]
But then I found this picture of a replica: [img3]
So I know finally, what to build 😉

Thx! Bernhard, you are right, the rivets are 0,2mm nickel silver. Now I can continue, I had to add the front before to stabilize the thin alu "ears".
Christian, to work with metal is fun for me, and the only way for me to create a stable and robust model. As usual on my models the rotary engine should be able to rotate with the mounted airscrew😉

bug, what plotter are you using? I'm interested looking into something like that. I've always wanted to get a laser cutter but maybe a knife cutter is more cost effective. I've seen the Cricut Maker/Explorer highly recommended but not sure how detailed of cuts it can do for things like detailed masks.

Yep, that is what I wanted to answer too😉
A laser cutter is may be not a good idea to cut PVC masking foil (chlorine!). A knife cut is much more precise.
Is this Cricut a cloud device? I heard, that some cutters needs a internet connection and cloud - I would never buy such things. If the cloud is no more supported, the device is bricked.

Oh no Tom! Two years ago I built virtually the same kit - a russian Tabloid copy called "Lebed". After that model was finished, I created the wooden floats with idea to create the Schneider one day. The real work on this project started in the first week of January to use the Xmas cutting plotter.
So this racer was created in 1,5 month.
