BAe Hawk Mk66 U-1251 Swiss Air Force

Start of the new project, something simple, out of the box 🙂 The cockpit of this Italeri Kit is rather simple
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/5/9/6/469596-29327-17-720.jpg)
The first layer of primer
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/6/0/0/469600-29327-71-720.jpg)
The cockpit leaves me rather helpless than smiling, hmmm... Looked for a Wolfpack replacement, I hope I'll get it this week, I'm curious how the difference will be.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/5/9/9/469599-29327-12-720.jpg)
I got the kit for about the half retail price. And this is what it is worth for me, tbh. The big secret for me is how the T-Rebox can cost even twice the price of the Italeri...
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/5/6/5/480565-29327-40-720.jpg)
Next attempt, the Wolfpack cockpit is ready so far
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/5/6/6/480566-29327-65-720.jpg)
Not perfect, but a lot better.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/5/6/7/480567-29327-62-720.jpg)
I think this is OK for now 🙂
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/5/0/5/483505-29327-25-720.jpg)
No inner life. So I had to add some parts...
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/5/0/6/483506-29327-39-720.jpg)
... to avoid looking into an empty fuselage
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/5/0/7/483507-29327-58-720.jpg)
Cockpit coverage was trimmed to fit in place...
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/5/0/8/483508-29327-92-720.jpg)
... and painted black
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/5/0/9/483509-29327-36-720.jpg)
Some black paint inside the fuselage added to give a bit of depth
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/5/1/0/483510-29327-33-720.jpg)
looks not too bad 🙂
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/8/6/495786-29327-47-720.jpg)
Fill the wing from the back...
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/7/8/8/495788-29327-41-720.jpg)
Since the "Red Arrow" kit contains just one visor in a very simple shape, I had to build them scratch.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/7/8/7/495787-29327-37-720.jpg)
Ready to mount them on the glare shields ...
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/7/8/9/495789-29327-77-720.jpg)
... and done
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/7/9/0/495790-29327-11-720.jpg)
Slowly she comes to my taste.

...and all over.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/8/9/526789-29327-26-720.jpg)
It will be necessary to fix some minor color inconsitencies
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/9/0/526790-29327-34-720.jpg)
All in all, I like how she evolves 🙂

![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/4/4/7/565447-29327-31-720.jpg)
Some work on the canopy: Started to scrape out the moulded detonation cords
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/4/4/9/565449-29327-54-720.jpg)
sanded

and polished.

Preparing the vinyl cords from Matterhorn Circle (Robi, you did a fantastic job!)

![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/4/5/3/565453-29327-41-720.jpg)
and this is how they look on the canopy. Not a quickie, but worth the effort.
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/8/9/7/581897-29327-12-720.jpg)
So here she is...
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/8/9/8/581898-29327-96-720.jpg)
...I consider her finished
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/8/9/9/581899-29327-34-720.jpg)
The canopy did not come out as desired,
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/9/0/2/581902-29327-87-720.jpg)
but ok
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/9/0/0/581900-29327-36-720.jpg)
All in all, it was good fun to build her
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/9/0/1/581901-29327-33-720.jpg)
in a rather unusual color scheme.

Thomas, maybe you want to wait for the Wolfpack seat, is might be a bit more comfortable 😉

I'm curious. If you take the MC decals and the Wolfpack Set, it will be a beauty😉

Chaps, thanks a lot for your nice comments.
Gordon: yes the bright red is a kind of a challenge, I am pretty sure she will not have the common SAF livery (the red-white one everybeody puts on their Mk66 Hawk).
Dave, Patrick: the IPs are cut out from the PE parts from the kit, I guess it is nicer than the WP resin IPs. I know I am a slow builder, still a lot of work in the kit until now.
Thomas: I hope the next couple of weeks give me more chance to crawl under my stone (aka go to my hobby room 😉 ) to gain a bit more progress. And shoot more pix.

Hans, according to the information I have, the livery lived just a couple of days, she was then re-painted to the commonly seen scheme (red, gray and black). Since I prefer to have my planes in liveries not always seen, this was an easy choice 🙂

Thomas, the Hawk looks very nice. Which color did you use for the red part?

Hi Marco.
This is the standard Tamiya Acrylic X7 / XF7, I have seen it is pretty close to the RAL 3020. The white crosses are masked out, the masks are included with the Matterhorn decals 🙂

Thanks Thomas. I always have problems to reach a rich red, I think I have to try this one from tamiya too. Matterhorn decals are one of my next purchase😉

Matterhorn Decals are a very good choice. I guess they invest a lot of time into historical research to have them printed correctly.
And the rich red should be no problem if you apply over a yellow or a white base. However, Tamiya colors are my preferred ones anyway, besides the Gunze Aqueous 🙂

Fantastic result Thomas! I wish I am 1:48 so I could take a seat in the cockpit 🙂

Nathan,
this was a short term Swiss marking. It was used for the transfer from UK to Switzerland. After a couple of days it was modified to the regular livery, which looks like the UK and the Finnish one, I guess there are some more Air Forces using it. This white one is much more appealing (at least to my taste). I found just two pictures plus the profile from Matterhorn Circle, there will be little proof that I did something wrong
Thanks for your comment, also to Spanjaard!

The swiss were sold to Finland. I hope you keep it, looks fantastic!

Thank you both. @Mirko: The real U-1251 found ca cozy place after retirement in the F&F Museum in Dübendorf (near Zurich). This one was not sold to Finland, and since I like those colorful models in my display, there is no reason to get rid of it 😄

Wise choice on the colour scheme, Thomas. Very nicely done, and very arresting compared to the alternatives!😉

Nice work on the big canopy clear part. When I look at sprue parts for this type of model in kits, the big canopy part always looks weird to me, as if the framing is molded wrong. Maybe I am imagining that, but somehow that one part always looks weird to me when looking at model kits of this jet.

Thanks for your kind words, they make me a bit shy.
@Nigel: My aim is to have alternative color schemes im my collection, moreover I prefer this scheme to the standard. 'Föifer und Weggli' situation (sorry, Swiss German saying) 😛
@Treehugger: The shape of the moulded cord is basically correct, compared to the original the look in the sprue part is a bit strange, I agree. On the other hand, the vynil cords are a bit too prominent, however, I prefer that over the standard look. Additionally it is a challenge to place the vynil cords into the canopy.
@Michael: By far not perfect, however I can see progress in my work 🙂

Well done early marking of a swiss air force hawk. As a proposal: a slight aging would make the step behind the cockpit less evident.
