F-4N Phantom II VF-84 Jolly Rogers

Album image #1
The pit is done. It will be in a flight mode, so nicely covered with a thick Hasegawa canopy...
It's a fast build while I wait for F-35C 🙂

Album image #11
So I'm trying out riveting on a primed model... Very lightly primed with Mr Surfacer 1500 Gray and White.

Album image #12
Daco's references are complete! Here wing screws.

Album image #13
More...

Album image #14
...and my attempt in the wing...

Album image #15
and fuselage riveting, also added PE bases for dorsal antennas and rescribed the round hatches lost during sanding.

Album image #16

Album image #17
tools used...

Album image #18
Work on ER's has started... It will carry two TER's on inner and two MER's on outer pylons...

Album image #19
And since Hasegawa didn't include MERs and TERs were ugly, scavenging work was done from HobbyBoss Skyhawk.

Album image #20
Preshading done on top side...

Album image #21
And gentle preshading on bottom

Album image #22
Gloss White FS17875 from MRP painted bottom and panels accented with PLW Mid-Gray tone.

Album image #23
For once, a closeup looks nicer than far view. 🙂

Album image #24
Progress made this weekend!

Album image #25
Painted wingtips and tail tip yellow, but first pink Surfacer.

Album image #26
Then masked sundeflector surface and...

Album image #27
...the black tail of the Jolly Rogers.

Album image #28
Pretty happy with the result, its starting to look like a pirate, harr harr!

Album image #29
Album image #30
Album image #31
Washed with deep gray

Album image #32
Album image #33
I know it's overdone, but this will all be unified under several layers of varnish and some oils and pastels...

Album image #34
Time for last painting on the Phantom, heavy metaaaal

Album image #35
Masking first with Tamiya flex tape, then Gunze yellow tape and last Tesa paper tape.

Album image #36
Basis done with three metals, but not there yet. Oils should do the trick to come close to the references.

Album image #37
Pulled off some primer and paint, apparently the elevator was not clean enough. So first sanding,

Album image #38
again basing with gloss black,

Album image #39
and st. steel. Should have sanded off the entire paint, surface is not even... I guess varnish will hide it further and then obscene amounts of smoke, this is the bottom side which is exposed...

Album image #40
Good enough

Album image #41
Top side of elevators

Album image #42
And metal base done and varnished with two thin layers of MRP Gloss varnish

Album image #43
Also shaded a bit with Tamiya smoke.

Album image #44
Decaling started! the easy ones up to nose done.

Album image #45
Now gathering mojo for stencils... >.<

Album image #46
The war with stencils on the top side was won!!!

Album image #47
Is anyone else keeping their "luke warm water" like this?

Album image #48
stupid stencils

Album image #49
busy front side...

Album image #50
left front even more!

Album image #51
Album image #52
left wing, top stenciled

Album image #53
Album image #54
and the tail

Album image #55

Album image #56
That's it, all the stencils are on.

Album image #57
While regaining sanity, I'll paint and glue something...

Album image #58
Just trying to match colors to reference images...

Album image #59
Close enough, it's not that any of this will be visible...

Album image #60
Happy.

Album image #61
The plane is completed. Starting work on armament.

Album image #62
After decals, there was another coat of ALC-600, then a bastardized acrylic matt varnish (mixture of Glänzer and VMS Matt lack) in several layers and Abteilung oils in between the layers. Enjoyed 🙂

All the junk to be hung on the spook... scavenged together from Hasegawa, Hobby boss, AIM's are from Eduard Brassin

Album image #81
Primed with Mr Surfacer 1500 black, thinned with Mr Leveling Thinner

Album image #82
Preshading 18 Mk82's in 1:72 is like... let's do it again!

Album image #83
Paint pink (MrColor White + Tamiya Clear Red)

Album image #84
Paint yellow (AK Real Color)

Album image #85
Protect stripes with Tamiya flexi tape and blutac

Album image #86
After painting with AK 3rd Gen Acryllics. First light green as base, then gray green mottling and then medium green mottling) 18 times!

Album image #87
Meanwhile rockets are drying - MrColor gloss white

Album image #88
Same with pylons and ejection racks.

Album image #89
Brand new unboxing from Raytheon 🙂
More lacquering, painting and maybe weathering tomorrow... this was over 50 micro decals itself

Album image #90
Weapons and pylons after a cruise or two...

Album image #91
I deem this one done. One dorsal antenna to reattach tomorrow (managed to clip it off with a clumsy hand, of course)...

Album image #92
..then better camera and better photos...

Welcome WhiteGlint and Maciej, it did start as a quick OoB but it might turn quite nice in details I hope 🙂

Thanks Spanjaard, the small rivets were preshaded, however they are so small I cant even see them from further than half a meter... lets see, top coat with darker wash is following.

About the Tesa Paper Tape, which one is it exactly you use? Do you have an artikel no.?! TIA and Happy Modelling, Christian
3 November 2021, 16:18
Sergej I
Thank you Christian.
I actually think it's an overkill with the UV, but even so it is a much cheaper option to kibuki tapes and less strong, so no fear of pulling paint. And the colour is nice 🙂

The Pirate is completed. With all the final antennae and position lights it now sits in the display and awaits armament. Again, mojo to handle 8 missiles and 12 bombs 🙂

Awesome work Sergej! It already looks cool without all those weapons!
Anyhow looking forward to the final flyout 👍!
10 December 2021, 10:22
Marius
This has to be one of the prettiest F-4J in 1:72 I have seen! I really love it. And you don't even need super detailing of electronic bays/radar or landing gear for that.
I also bought the exact same sets as you and will start it next year! This is what's nice in this community, you inspire and motivate others too!
10 December 2021, 10:34
Bas Tonn
Correct Marius !! I'll drink to that

That's it for 18 bombs. 6 on inner pylon TER's and 12 on outer pylon MER's.
I think I read somewhere that they didn't use Sidewinders in such loadout, but I couldn't find it again and will add them. Anyway I already messed up the tail antenna fin, so rivetcounters could laugh me down 🙂
17 December 2021, 21:20
Spanjaard
packing a punch!! it will look terrific 🙂
17 December 2021, 23:16
Maxim Malparte
@Sergej I phantomphacts.blogsp..-inboard-pylons.html. Puzzled by the same question. I found no evidence showing a geometrical interference, so I currently think that it's not 'unable' but 'unlikely'. (worse aero, higher colliding potential, etc.) A bit too early for the conclusion as well, You can have both like this and step out of the bar in one piece. :-P [img1]

18 December 2021, 08:40
Sergej I
Thank you Spanjaard and Max!
Max, that page does help a lot in demistifying the loadout... will think about it while on vacation, I will have to finish this one just before thw NY...
18 December 2021, 10:17
Maxim Malparte
No hurry. Take your time. 👍
18 December 2021, 12:19
Sergej I
Found this post while searching for a "correct" bomb load on the Phantom... dumping it here, might help someone during the upcoming GB.
Also, decided to not overshoot the 12 Mk82's, so my F-4 will carry 2 Mk82's on inner TER's with all four AIM'9D's, 4 Mk's on outer MER's and 2x AIM-7E-2's on aft stations, with centerline fuel tank. There! 🙂

Read the post, very informative. (I envy those 'boys' who have a gold mine called 'father'.)
27 December 2021, 04:38

Just perfect 👍!
27 December 2021, 05:21
Marius
Well, look at the positive side of painting those 18 bombs, at least they weren't 19.
27 December 2021, 05:52
Sergej I
Thank you for comments, mates! Today I will paint the fuses, lacquer the AIM's some more, then gingerly wash the rockets an paint the heat-seeking sensors tips matte gray. Should keep me busy for a day or two 🙂
27 December 2021, 07:03
Sergej I
Done! Finished!
FFS I don't know if I ever put so many stencils on all models together... only bombs and AIM's I counted 78.
Pylons, counted 40...
I'll make decent photos and a separate album, hope you all enjoyed and thanks for patience, took a while 🙂 👍

I fancy a quickbuild until new years now... an F4D-1 Skyray is looking down from the stash shelf with absolutely no add-ons...
28 December 2021, 00:30
Vincent
Amazing result and all the work on the stencils is really worth it. One of the best 1/72 models I've seen in a long time. Really inspiring.
28 December 2021, 00:57
Marius
Sergej, first of all congratulations on the fact that you finished this jewel of a model. I will wait for your separate album first. Secondly, it was worth it, the quality is obvious. You will remember all the effort when you're going to look back at this model and its hundreds of stencils.
