So I'm trying out riveting on a primed model... Very lightly primed with Mr Surfacer 1500 Gray and White.
Daco's references are complete! Here wing screws.

and fuselage riveting, also added PE bases for dorsal antennas and rescribed the round hatches lost during sanding.

Work on ER's has started... It will carry two TER's on inner and two MER's on outer pylons...
And since Hasegawa didn't include MERs and TERs were ugly, scavenging work was done from HobbyBoss Skyhawk.
Preshading done on top side...
And gentle preshading on bottom
Gloss White FS17875 from MRP painted bottom and panels accented with PLW Mid-Gray tone.
For once, a closeup looks nicer than far view. 🙂
Progress made this weekend!
Painted wingtips and tail tip yellow, but first pink Surfacer.
Then masked sundeflector surface and...
...the black tail of the Jolly Rogers.
Pretty happy with the result, its starting to look like a pirate, harr harr!
Washed with deep gray
I know it's overdone, but this will all be unified under several layers of varnish and some oils and pastels...
Time for last painting on the Phantom, heavy metaaaal
Masking first with Tamiya flex tape, then Gunze yellow tape and last Tesa paper tape.
Basis done with three metals, but not there yet. Oils should do the trick to come close to the references.
Pulled off some primer and paint, apparently the elevator was not clean enough. So first sanding,
again basing with gloss black,
and st. steel. Should have sanded off the entire paint, surface is not even... I guess varnish will hide it further and then obscene amounts of smoke, this is the bottom side which is exposed...

Also shaded a bit with Tamiya smoke.
Decaling started! the easy ones up to nose done.
Now gathering mojo for stencils... >.<

The plane is completed. Starting work on armament.
After decals, there was another coat of ALC-600, then a bastardized acrylic matt varnish (mixture of Glänzer and VMS Matt lack) in several layers and Abteilung oils in between the layers. Enjoyed 🙂
All the junk to be hung on the spook... scavenged together from Hasegawa, Hobby boss, AIM's are from Eduard Brassin
Primed with Mr Surfacer 1500 black, thinned with Mr Leveling Thinner
Preshading 18 Mk82's in 1:72 is like... let's do it again!
Paint pink (MrColor White + Tamiya Clear Red)
Paint yellow (AK Real Color)
Protect stripes with Tamiya flexi tape and blutac
After painting with AK 3rd Gen Acryllics. First light green as base, then gray green mottling and then medium green mottling) 18 times!
Meanwhile rockets are drying - MrColor gloss white
Same with pylons and ejection racks.
Brand new unboxing from Raytheon 🙂

I deem this one done. One dorsal antenna to reattach tomorrow (managed to clip it off with a clumsy hand, of course)...

I actually think it's an overkill with the UV, but even so it is a much cheaper option to kibuki tapes and less strong, so no fear of pulling paint. And the colour is nice 🙂

MariusThis has to be one of the prettiest F-4J in 1:72 I have seen! I really love it. And you don't even need super detailing of electronic bays/radar or landing gear for that.
I also bought the exact same sets as you and will start it next year! This is what's nice in this community, you inspire and motivate others too!

Sergej IThat's it for 18 bombs. 6 on inner pylon TER's and 12 on outer pylon MER's.
I think I read somewhere that they didn't use Sidewinders in such loadout, but I couldn't find it again and will add them. Anyway I already messed up the tail antenna fin, so rivetcounters could laugh me down 🙂

I found no evidence showing a geometrical interference, so I currently think that it's not 'unable' but 'unlikely'. (worse aero, higher colliding potential, etc.) A bit too early for the conclusion as well, You can have both like this and step out of the bar in one piece. :-P [img1]

Sergej IFound this post while searching for a "correct" bomb load on the Phantom... dumping it here, might help someone during the upcoming GB.
Also, decided to not overshoot the 12 Mk82's, so my F-4 will carry 2 Mk82's on inner TER's with all four AIM'9D's, 4 Mk's on outer MER's and 2x AIM-7E-2's on aft stations, with centerline fuel tank. There! 🙂
