A much awaited kit for ML-KNIL enthusiasts! This kit arrived today, had to start it immediately! This particular box is one of 100 pieces made for the Dutch IPMS show "Euro Scale modelling" which was unfortunately cancelled. The kits were to be sold at the show but after the cancellation they could be purchased from Dora's website! A second edition with nicer artwork will be released this year. Also a "A" version too, which has a different undercarriage. The plastic looks very good, a bit soft maybe but sharply moulded with no flash at all. Let's see how it builds up! 💪🏻

This will be another stunner from your hand Erik...👍!

Welcome Jos and Ben! Started to add some rivets, a first time for me.

Hi Erik, I'll be following this build too. I'm building DW's Percival Vega Gull and find it a bit disappointing (too many parts, many approximations, useless PE), but it looks like the quality of their kits is improving !

Following! First time with rivet wheel may be pretty scary, but you achieved a nice and clean result.

Oooh, that is one nice kit! Following this!

I would like to ask: Is the whole kit a limited edition or is it a "normal" kit with extra decals or parts?

Robert Podkoński
Watching, of course!

Thanks Boris, David, Jan, Matthias, Robert and Guy!
@Boris, well yes it looks quite good. Nice dark grey plastic, a bit on the soft side but looks much better than the earlier DW kits. Although the engineering is a bit odd on some places and the instructions are a bit vague, especially on the mlg bay area.
@David R, my first time! But I'm a bit on hold now since I'll have to rivet the fuselage now, which is very much round so mych more difficult than the wing area! I think i'll assamble the fuselage together first and after the rivets. The fuselage is much sturdier when the halves are put together.
@Matthias, this kit is limited to 100 boxes but very soon Dora will release the final version of this kit!

How are you adding rivets? In 1/32 and 1/35 I've used the heads of pins as rivets, somehow I think you will not be taking this approach 🙂

Erik Leijdens
No indeed Ben, I'm using Rosie the Riveter 0,6mm. A very handy tool!

I think there is a flaw in the instructions. If you put part F13 and 14 in the place as Dora Wings wants then in my opinion the wheel leg mounting point is too deep. The instructions don't show that notch either. Only a notch on the part at the front but that is a hole in real life. If I dry fit with the wheel leg it does indeed look like the parts F13 and 14 do not turn over. Of course, I only found this out AFTER I had already glued them in place like Dora wants! On picture 11 they are in the right place imo. Nice kit, vague instructions!

Thanks for documenting this. I always appreciate tips on builds!

Dryfit looks promising. Only the partial seam of the wing-fuselage is not in such a convenient place I think!

Sprayed the cockpit aluminium, as was the standard for KNIL CW-21s

I like the look of your painted cockpit. The wash seems just right to my eye.
If I can risk a few bits of advice or things to try on your next build, I would thin the seat walls to the scale-equivalent of folded metal (a quick job that makes a big difference), and bend the 'L' end of the shoulder harness buckles 90 degrees. Also, if your control stick is glued askew, the corresponding flight controls (on wings and/or tailplanes) should match that.
These are just my pet peeves, of course !

Thanks for your reply Boris! Yes the seat thickness is not really on scale but the canopy will be closed anyway so I think it will not be that clear once it's done. I think I don't really understand what you mean with the end of the shoulder buckles? 90 degrees to what side? Nothing is mentioned in Eduards instructions too. I deliberately glued the control stick in a askew position since the elevators are separate pieces, which off course will be placed in the corresponding position too.🙂

The instructions are available for this set, but it's the same for all USAAF seatbelts of the period : Seatbelts USAAF WWII (Eduard FE817, 1:48)

The end part of the shoulder buckles are placed together and inserted into the lap belt buckles to lock them together.

Ah yes I see. Will bend it!
