Mig 29 dual build Polish Air Force
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/5/4/5/1193545-12448-94-720.jpg)
One each single and twin seat. I had the Caracal decals before I got the A kit. Was trying to buy the original issue but had to stump up for a new boxing with the Polish Air Force decals. Inspired by the display I saw at RIAT 2015. Cockpits and upper fuse parts prepped.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/5/5/2/1193552-12448-95-720.jpg)
Pits installed. Hard to photograph. Apart from the Caracal decals both kits will be oob.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/5/5/3/1193553-12448-46-720.jpg)
Yup, side-by-side build.

![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/5/5/9/1193559-12448-77-720.jpg)
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/5/6/0/1193560-12448-64-720.jpg)
Single.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/5/6/1/1193561-12448-47-720.jpg)
Twin.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/5/6/4/1193564-12448-95-720.jpg)
Nose weight added, just in case!
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/5/6/7/1193567-12448-26-720.jpg)
And after a couple of hours we'll spent, this is where we are. Nice simple modelling again.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/1/2/8/1197128-12448-50-720.jpg)
Ok, forgot to photo the filling/sanding but there but wasn't much. Used some perfect plastic putty on the lower fin/fuselage joints, smoothed with damp cloth. Had to sand the nose area top/bottom joint alright and the lower intake/engine area. Tried Tamiya lacquer paint for the base grey, dark/light ghost grey. I'm impressed with this paint the more I use it. Gives a lovely smooth finish.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/1/2/9/1197129-12448-29-720.jpg)
As per the Caracal instructions I copied the plans at 133% to get 1/72. I placed tape over the printouts and traced the patterns on the tape removed and cut it out on the cutting mat. (This took a while, but considerably less time than it took to set the computer to print at 133%) 🙁
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/1/3/0/1197130-12448-32-720.jpg)
Looking close. The gunship grey is Humbrol 125. I now think the tamiya ghost grey is very blue. Hmmmm.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/1/3/1/1197131-12448-77-720.jpg)
Ub. Hmmm.. do I need to go over it again?
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/1/3/2/1197132-12448-42-720.jpg)
And some of the tape used. I haven't used this technique before.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/2/3/2/1207232-12448-25-720.jpg)
Ok, went over with some very thinned dark ghost grey to try and soften the edges somewhat. Probably a bit too soft now.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/3/3/1207233-12448-53-720.jpg)
Ah well. Might not be accurate but looks better
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/2/3/4/1207234-12448-65-720.jpg)
I also did some light weathering with very thinned enamel black wiped off with white spirit. Doesn't affect the lacquer paint. Hard to see here...
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/2/3/8/1207238-12448-25-720.jpg)
Really impressed with these portraits and love how they look (on both the real aircraft and the models.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/2/3/9/1207239-12448-11-720.jpg)
Both models got a clear coat of tamiya LP 9 prior to decals. Was still really a satin rather than gloss though.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/2/4/0/1207240-12448-18-720.jpg)
I used Mr Mark Setter and Softener on the Caracal decals. Still got some silvering on some and others were perfect. The big badge decals are in 3 parts each and needed multiple applications of softener.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/2/4/1/1207241-12448-35-720.jpg)
Especially on the base of the spine as per dead centre of this photo.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/2/4/2/1207242-12448-99-720.jpg)
Single seater. Caracal insignia here. Used the Italeri insignia on the UB. It's a bit bigger than the Caracal ones but figured the more colourful badge would draw the eye here. As per previous experience, I used Johnson's Klear as decal setting agent for all Italeri decals.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/2/4/3/1207243-12448-50-720.jpg)
Pleased with this.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/2/4/4/1207244-12448-20-720.jpg)
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/2/4/5/1207245-12448-35-720.jpg)
Only damage, tried to rub down too soon and too hard after Mr Mark Setter applied.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/2/4/6/1207246-12448-83-720.jpg)
It's a pity the Tamiya LP dark ghost grey is nowhere near the decals. Oh well...
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/6/5/1/1228651-12448-80-720.jpg)
Engine cans. Different on both kits?
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/6/5/2/1228652-12448-77-720.jpg)
Calling these finished. All final details added, only missiles left to add, still not sure if I'll bother.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/6/5/3/1228653-12448-26-720.jpg)
This is not the actual plane I saw at RIAT 2015 but is inspired by it. So no underwing stores.
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/6/5/4/1228654-12448-75-720.jpg)
Rather pleased with how they've turned out.

Pity the Tamiya LP dark ghost grey doesn't come close to the decals.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/6/5/8/1228658-12448-97-720.jpg)
And the twin stick. I only decided to build this as it was on the Caracal sheet I got for the single seater.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/6/5/9/1228659-12448-70-720.jpg)
I already did a kit over 20 years ago, brush painted and some old Blue Rider decals for Serbian AF. Much prefer this scheme.

Can't do much more about the poor fit of the canopy.
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/6/6/2/1228662-12448-91-720.jpg)
Colourful at least.

Both together.
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/6/6/5/1228665-12448-61-720.jpg)
I don't know if I will add the stores. For me a kit is finished if it looks like it's ready to fly. So these will do for now.
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/6/6/6/1228666-12448-46-720.jpg)
And with the old kit.
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/6/6/7/1228667-12448-89-720.jpg)
Interesting how my skills have improved. I've no date for the old one but it was before I had an airbrush so late 90s I'd say.
Thanks everyone for looking and encouraging along the way.

And both on public display as of next Saturday.

Ah watching this one! I have the same double-build plan further down the line, although Hungarian ones from Trumpeter.

Ok, small update, photos to follow tomorrow. Clear coat added and decalling started. I've come up against 2 issues with the Caracal decals. 1, there is only 4 national insignia squares for a decal sheet with 3 options. According to Caracal none of the 3 have insignia on the upper wings. Granted there is a photo on the website showing this but I've a feeling it's a plane not finished painting as I've seen plenty of photos of the two I'm building (111 & 15) with all 6 insignia. Also, the camouflage guide for the UB does not match any photos I can find of 15.

That's because the Polish Air Force insignias were not applied on the upper surfaces of the wings before 2013, Roy. So, I suppose the decal sheet was developed before this year, and all the photos you've found are newer. BTW, in the late 1990ties there was a decision to "turn" the Polish "checkerboard" by 90 degrees... You can compare these on the photos of Polish MiG-21's and MiG-29's...

Ah OK thanks Robert, the Caracal decals are from 2010 I think. I put all 6 from the Italeri sheet on the UB and the 4 Caracal ones on the single seater, upper wings and tail. Grrrr....

I think I haven't seen it earlier. Built same single seater, but from Trumpy. Had the same problem with the Caracal grey.
Your couple is looking grand mate 👍 (not only because of the roundels 😛 )
