Ok, here are my two cents on that:

A cutting mat is very recommended indeed. Bigger areas can be well protected with a sheet of cardboard.
I would add a very good set of files. I personally like the Basic Tamiya file set a lot because it has a good bite, is easy to control and not overly expensive (Basic File Set (Smooth Double Cut) (Tamiya 74104, No)).
High quality nippers make a hell of a difference, but be warned: their price hurts. But as soon as you have them, you'll never regret it. Treat them with care and cut plastic only.
(Sharp Pointed Side Cutter for Plastic (Tamiya 74035, No))
Get one or two cheap brushes and two or three high quality ones. The first for mixing paints, the latter for your paint job. Sable is to be preferred, Winson & Newton Series No. 7 is a good bet, but there are many others around too. If your budget allows for only one (they are expensive!), I'd go for a size 2 brush. I do around 90% of my handpaint job with this size, but I do have an airbrush for larger areas. Smaller brushes hold only small quantities of paint and what you need to paint a detail is not a small brush, but a sharp tip of the brush. Again: treat them brushes nicely too.
Water alone doesn't clean your brushes thoroughly enough. Isopropyl alcohol helps with that, can be used to thin down the acrylic Tamiya paints and is way cheaper than special brush cleaners.

Get a set of sandpaper - preferably wet and dry. I like grit 400 for the coarser stuff, together with grit 280, 600, 800 and maybe 1500 will be a decent start. I still cherish the tip from Alexander Grivonev: get two erasers. One you cut into smaller pieces. When you wrap the sandpaper around the eraser you have a stable platform with a straight surface, but just the right amount of flexibility left. Of course you can buy sanding sticks too, which are very convenient, but they cost much, much more.
All told, this will cost you around 100€.
When equipped with this I would buy a second lamp (best with a so-called daylight bulb), to be placed on the other side of the working area to minimize shadows.
The ol' rule of other crafts apply to modelling too: you buy cheap, you buy twice.

I'd say, with the above mentioned stuff I still do about 80% of my basic modelling.

Hope this helps a bit.

Have fun. Cheers Michael

Well i do have multiple lamps, i have a snipper at home and my mother builds stuff so i have an abundance of sand paper and other tools. But thanks for the suggestions Michael, they're well appreciated

Got 40-ish euros, decided to cut my losses and just buy a few things. Heres the list: hobimaailm.ee/et/a/tamiya-cement-liim-40ml claypitrc.eu/en/a/st..sher-cold-dirty-grey claypitrc.eu/en/a/trumpeter-challenger-ii-1-35 . Gonna try weathering for the first time with the support of my mates gorby and martin oostrom. I know we're just strangers on the internet who have exchanged a few words but you've really made me feel like i can accomplish any model building dream i want. Thanks.

I'm not the best person to advise on weathering as I don't really know what I'm doing and don't really enjoy that stage - if I ever achieve a decent result it's always by accident. 😄
Danumurthi Manendra, a Scalemates member recently posted something that might help:

And a lot of modellers think very highly of Uncle Night Shift:

Having said that, don't feel you have to produce award winning models. As long as you are enjoying yourself and you are happy with your finished model, that's all that matters.
Have fun with you purchases. 🙂

A very long time ago I built a Trumpeter Challenger probably related to this kit, it looked like this when finished: [img1]
I wish you good luck. It's better to seal the decals and not have them peeling off like the one on my dozer blade when you start weathering.

The trouble is that many of the weathering tutorials will assume you have an aribrush. It is possible to weather well without and airbrush, maybe look on Youtube to see if there are any suitable videos which may help.

I don't understand how more skilled modellers have multiple sets that they're working on at once. Like don't you have a budget? Don't you have other things to do? Don't you have a job to go to??? I build like one model every other, sometimes every month.

I am not a great modeler and I am not productive at all. Turns out, I like scale modeling very much, but mostly when I am bored.
Turns out, even though I do like fixing kits and making improvements, I would rather have scale model kits requiring little to no fixing.
Slowly but surely, still I get more and more practice. A recent "halleluja" moment was when I learned about this thinner mix for my Vallejo paints, using an airbrush, no more tip dry, also learned to use both my 0.35 (better for putting paint onto intricate details) and my 0.5 airbrush guns (so much more paint flow).

My kit stash size is starting to get rediculous. I also like investing into new tools, something I couldn't do before, couldn't afford it.

There seems to be some people, other than me, putting together and seemingly frequently completing very nice ship models, even including some ocean diorama, most impressive. 🙂

Some people seem willing to spend a lot of money on aftermarket parts, I can't justify doing that beyond some limit. I can't buy a large amount of 3d crew figures for a 1:350 ship, beyond some amount, it just seems way too expensive.

Having a fulltime job at 47, with a relatively high salary gives me some money to burn on hobbies.

I have an insane idea. When i get back to tallinn im going to my local hobby shop, buying a leopard 2a7 (if i have the budget and the store has it 🙁 ) then buy a fake grass plate and some minifigs. Then smash it all together and make a moc. I know it sounds boring but im 12 and this is my first ever moc so even just this is a big deal for me (sorry for rambling)

Hobbymaailm only has the 2a6 from Tamiya. Not cheap.
For kitbashing, this is your cheapest option? hobimaailm.ee/et/a/1-35-tamiya-t-62a

Looks like it's been well played with like I did with my models when I was a kid. That's good for a six year old. No photos were ever taken of my childhood builds (I didn't have a camera) but I suspect they were a similar standard - and I was a teenager, not six.

I posted a snap-tight kit with stickers instead of decals...a true horror piece.🙂 Post all your builds to see your skill progression over time. 😉 I need to update one of my builds with new photos of a destroyed model thanks to my kitty.

Does anything happen to decals if you leave them in water for too long? I left a decal into water for 10 minutes because i forgot about it and now im scared its going to break
9 August, 03:36
B777VN
It won't break unless the decal is too old and brittle before immersion. However the decal glue is gone and you need to apply Microset or equivalent before placing the decal.
