How is the fit of the wing fold? I tried it on an Academy Bearcat (because I already had that built and didn't want another build) but the Academy wing is too thin and now the top surface of the port wing has split and I'm stuck.

Got engines built and installed into frames. This ancient kit is showing its age on the molds, and instructions and basically everything. Certainly Not for beginners but I'm not doing a serious build and will muddle through it just fine without getting too worked up.

Front suspension mounted to chassis of the factory T and rear suspension dry fit. Then dry fit the fenders for fun. There's a ton of black on your average model T. Mine will be an interpretation of the factory "commercial green" for the body and truck bed.

Got the factory T on its wheels and fenders on. I tried to break up the blacks a little with some greens and grays but it mostly just looks dark in pictures. Some nice contrast in real life though. A note to anyone building this kit. My torque tube was not long enough to center the rear wheels under the rear wheel arches. They ended up too far forward. I just added a small piece to the rear of the transmission to push the centerline of the rear end back just a hair. Seems to have worked well enough.

Thanks for the info on how to solve problems whed rear akel
And whed the colours
Just remember Ford would give you any colour you like as long as it's black lol

No problem Jv. Seems like it could be a common issue with this kit. Isn't a complicated fix but it makes it look a lot better. I Put up a pic of the new axle position now.

Stock 🙂 Sweet. The model kit box doesn't expect, that there is the "regualr" kit in with all it's tuning and customizing options included.
25 October 2022, 10:37
Kyle DeHart
Christian, I honestly had no idea when I bought this kit that it was actually two entire kits. I just thought the model T hot rod would be cool to build!
25 October 2022, 11:39
Kyle DeHart
Jv, I added a picture of my simple modification. I found a small circular part in my stash of unused stuff (I believe it may have been an ignition coil). I shaved it down, drilled the center and then inserted it into the back of the trans where the torque tube goes. Then I inserted the torque tube into my new piece. I circled it on the picture I added. The torque tube is the gray piece on the left, the transmission is the gloss black piece to the right and the small piece between them is my mod. Easy enough and I'll touch it up with some black to blend it right in.
25 October 2022, 11:43
Kyle DeHart
Also got some headway on the hot rod. Blown Lincoln 430 dropped into the chassis and suspension put into place. This car has a bit more color to it than the stock T, that's for sure.

And now we have two model Ts with bodies. On the chopped coupe I used the rear of the orange tinted glass with the clear front windshield. Simply because I though the orange glass was cool and when would I get another chance to use that. But who wants to look through orange glass as they're driving

Hahaha. Thanks guys. Tom, airbrushed flames would fit this old nostalgia hot rod perfectly. Alas, I have no airbrush. I'm firmly encamped on the rattle can side of things. Have to look through the decal graveyard and see what I can come up with.

Factory T now at 90% complete. Top down enjoying a day off work…perhaps a Sunday cruise. Detailed the wonderfully placed under seat fuel tank with a brass cap and straps. Wood bed and headlights also installed.

As for the chopped T. Flames it is. Lol. And a touch of pinstriping on the duck tail. It's Also nearing the end. Should be able to knock these the rest of the way out tomorrow.

Nicely done, Kyle. They came out really great!

No chance you'll try airbrushing? It is quite a journey to get decent with it but I do love the results now. It's like its own hobby really.

Thanks Jv.

Thanks Tom! I had fun with this…I have gone back and forth with the airbrush thing quite a bit. There are a lot of benefits, to be sure. And I'd imagine it's very satisfying once you get it down. Just not sure if I want to add another hobby to my hobby. 😂 I've only considered getting one about 100 times or so, just haven't talked myself into it yet. Maybe I will down the road one day.

Didn't you use an airbrush? 😮 Can you explain your technic to achieve such a nice shiny result with brushes?
1 November 2022, 03:40
Kyle DeHart
Thank you for the compliment about my finish! I've never owned an airbrush or even touched one. Rattle cans, my friend. I've been using them since I first started model building. I use the hairy stick to do all detail painting and painting of small parts, but all the body work and big stuff I shoot with rattle cans. Nothing special at all.
1 November 2022, 07:35
Christian W
So do I. I'm familiar with airbrush too but I'm preferring rattle cans. "Quick and dirty" 😄
I use my airbrush mostly with clear coat or when I have a couple of part of different kits to be painted in several colors. Mostly black flat and semi gloss, aluminum, iron. Only for the big parts like chassis and interior tube.
If I use the airbrush then not only for a handful of parts. The benefit sometime is to less on my point of view. When the preparation and cleaning takes more time than the brushing 🙂, then I take rattle cans.
The only collection I completely paint with airbrush are my silver Corvette. Just to be sure that the body color has the same color. By using rattle can it could be a small different by changing the can from one to another.
1 November 2022, 11:21
Bozzer
Evening gentlemen. Just to add my thoughts...
I was an avid rattle can man, and I had some great results with them, back in the day. However, for shells and bodies, large stuff, etc, I wanted an airbrush, for the numerous colours, that you couldn't get? It took me a while, to find my own techniques and get everything right, but now it's second nature. I basically love the control, and the lack of wasted paint. Yes, I still screw up, but that's because of my own stupidity, not the equipment. People talk about the cleaning up after, but I just run some cellulose thinner through all my airbrushes, and that's it. Maybe once a month, I'll strip them down, for a thorough clean, but that depends on usage? But, I definitely think that a decent airbrush, is the key. My Badger 360, was the best investment that I ever made. I also have the Badger Rage, for my detail stuff, a Neo, and a couple of cheap Chinese copies, for clear coating, etc. And definitely, I still tinker with the hairy stick, for the finer details. I hope this helps you all?
1 November 2022, 17:29
Kyle DeHart
Christian, Bozzer, I appreciate the insights. I definitely see the advantages in color control, wasted paint, custom colors and all that. I'm not against an airbrush by any means. Just isn't something I'm ready to add to my arsenal yet. But I never rule it completely out for the future! I'll never give up my hairy stick though. Lol
1 November 2022, 20:01
bossy122
Here lately, my TS sprays have been setting with flat areas in them. I don't know if the paint is old or what. The thing I find with an airbrush is less paint getting under the masking tape since I can control the air pressure, where as with the can, it's like blasting your model with a fire extenguisher. But I certainly understand hating the clean up of an airbrush. The cup alone takes 10 minutes, then the feed, then the pin.....and with me, I have to clean all the shit off the airbrush itself....and by then, the garage is a cloud of thinner....awful.
2 November 2022, 00:46
Kyle DeHart
I've had some dud cans from Tamiya as well bossy. Had a silver one that did extremely odd things. Eventually for a decent coat down but it was quite wasteful. And I'm really not a very good modeler, I even use krylon and rustoleum cans from the big box stores every now and then if I Like a color. Always worked ok for me. Anyways, like I said, I know the benefits of the airbrush are there, I still just can't bring myself to add that to my hobby at the moment. It's a limiting factor but one I can live with so far.

Thanks Frank! I actually like the green one more as well. This entire thing is ancient tooling but they did a good job on it for the time. I'd like to do some more Model T builds, either this kit or the modern ICM stuff and I plan on getting an ICM model A too. Love the classics.

I'm still trying to improve my "sanding" pre-shade technique, I think it works best with lacquer paints as they stick much better to the exposed plastic than any other type. As this will join my other VC tributes it will be on a pedestal so I'm happy enough with the underside - no competition winner but ok as will not be seen but was good practice with black

Time for more practice with doing my own masks based on the decal sheet. I intend to cover these with a blank which I now know should be a fraction smaller than the outer ring thus preventing a gap showing up, either that or I should spray the outer ring colour larger which seams to be the same idea only different😆. If any one with better knowledge on the best way you should approach spraying roundels please advise 👍

Seems like if you painted the roundel after the base color you wouldn't have the gap problem?
18 November, 22:29

You're welcome David.

Ben, sometimes I miss the trees for the woods, you have a simple solution 👍. To try and make me seam a little less foolish I think I was trying to ensure I didn't get any sign of the camo marks in the roundels and in doing so have over complicated my life 🤪
18 November, 22:39
Ben M
I looked at how I did it the one time I tried it and I did the opposite, I painted the roundel first but didn't mask the edge round. Then I masked the whole thing with a tape circle PVA-KNIL Deperdussin-Léon de Brouckère Monoplane | Album by Bourgeois Detailism (1:48)

I try to come up with a plan where every edge is only masked once of that makes sense.
19 November, 00:46

@Ben That's a great looking build you did there. thats the kind of thing I was going for but I tend to confuse my small bear brain as can be seen by the extra yellow ring above (pic 15) that should have been white 🤪

Thank you for the kind comments! Rick, the fit of the larger parts (wings, fuselage, floats, canopy) in my kit was good. The fit of the small parts in the kit was not great. A lot of the small parts had to be trimmed and sanded in some way. There are a lot of small parts. Securing the engine cowl and a fitting a lot of the small parts of the engine was very fiddly. In the end though it did go together and came out decently

First pictures of the first steps in the construction of a B-17G, whose mission role particularly appealed to me: I had long been fascinated by the sea rescue missions of this B-17 equipped with a droppable lifeboat! So I was delighted when I found one of the rare kits on the subject here on scalemates.
A few months ago I had already built an Academy 'Flying Fortress' in an early B version, the kit qualities of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The accuracy of fit is not far from 'perfect' and the details that are often missing in these Academy kits have to be added wherever it is important. In this case that means A set of etched parts for the cockpit and nose area, as well as an exterior set, especially for the engines and undercarriage, and resin tyres, also from Eduard. Not to forget: the seat cushions from Kits World were used in the cockpit

The SB-17G is slowly taking shape. The V-position of the wings needs to be changed: in my opinion, Academy has set a much too steep angle here! The corrected position of the wings also results in the distances at the wing-fuselage bonding points.... the fit here would be excellent!

In preparation for the surface colours, I have now done the following: I have masked those stripes over the black primer that are to remain visible as black lines separating the NMF surfaces from the large yellow zones using suitably wide Tamiya masking tape. I also masked the areas on the leading edges that carry the rubber 'de-icers'.
Next, the anti-glare areas in front of the cockpit and on the inside of the engine nacelles are sprayed, then.... then come the Alclad metal colours!

Very nice progress. I hope that there is no bleeding with that yellow paint 🙂

Thank you Villiers and Robert! Indeed, I had to sand over the colour edges a little....

At last I can replace the unattractive sanitary towel pictures of the SB-17 with ones that show their true appearance! 🙂
The new pictures are already close: the high gloss level comes from the sealing of the decals.... now it will be adjusted with different clear coats.

Now the sea rescue SB-17 has been completed!
A final challenge was the attachment of the lifeboat: as the original photos show, the gunwale should be more or less flush with the underside of the B-17, but this was impossible to achieve with the moulds of the kit boat! I have now created a new gunwale with Tamiya masking tape and painted it yellow after cutting it to size. After that, and with careful adjustments, I was able to fit the boat correctly.

I am very pleased to have found this kit here on scalemates from a colleague, so that I have been able to realise an old dream: I have always been very enthusiastic about this version! Thank you for your input and your motivating comments!

Great build with perfect masking and painting!

Crazy! The sailors might first lose their ship and then be bombarded with a boat!
Seriously, how did they drop the boat exactly where it was needed? Flying low? With a parachute?

Thank you both! That is very appreciated! I am attaching a very descriptive link that could answer your question....

Now I can thank you for all your animating and motivating reactions, mates! I am very pleased that you like the 'B-17 in the yellow sweater'! (Thanks for the marvellous association, Skyhiker!) I'm sure you can imagine how pleased and motivated I am - thank you!
What I'm looking for now is a conversion option for a passenger-carrying variant, which I also find unusual and, well , cool.
