Here's the first update on a project I recently completed. This build was particularly meaningful to me for a few reasons. Firstly, the F-22 is one of my all-time favorite aircraft. I've had this kit for several years, but I've always been hesitant to start building it due to the challenging paint job required for the Raptor. Luckily, and that's the second reason why this is so special to me, my loyal follower Marie asked me to build a Raptor for her. Since I was currently in between projects, I just started building right away and surprisingly the end result turned out better than expected. Most importantly, Marie is thrilled with the model I sent her!
Below you can see the pilot figure I painted just because I think aircraft in flight without a crew look odd. As far as I know, Raptor pilots are not equipped with JHMCS helmets but that's just a minor detail I decided to overlook given the small scale. More updates will follow as I'm currently working on a video showcasing the building and painting process in detail.

Would love to see more Raptor kits with other paint schemes and decals not requiring an air brush

@Matt Well, I don't know of any other paint schemes for Raptors other than the standard and chrome schemes! However, it's always up to you how you want to paint your model 🙂

Like to keep it authentic with decals and paint schemes - maybe we will see different paint design with a new future F-22 variant (if it happens). Many 5th gen jets seem to get pretty advance schemes where detailed airbrushing may be the best option though.

Sadly, I doubt we are going to see any variants - as the production lines have been shuttered for quite a while - and the USAF cancelled any new block upgrades in favor of the NGAD program. Outside of the Tomcat, I felt that the Raptor was a rare no-compromise aircraft built for total air dominance. I'm interested in seeing how you tackle the metallic coloring for this bird. I'd also love to see your comments on the pictures! 😀

Hi Desert 👋 looking good....see your getting good use of the scotch tape, Do you use super glue for wings on larger models? Or stick to stand cement?
Nice subject by the way 😁👍
1  23 January, 21:54
Desert Marlin
Thanks. I'm using standard Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. The quick Setting cement is not good for those joints. The regular cement, when given plenty of time to cure is pretty good. The fuselage joints have come out really strong. The wings are good when plenty of milling is done to make the joint very clean. Then the cement has a large surface area to cling to. So far, its all gone very well.
1  24 January, 00:38
Mr D
Thanks Desert👍 l get concerned sometimes on larger parts if the extra than is enough. Sounds like if you have good surface it will be ok.
Good luck with the build 😃👍

I'm with DM. I love the quick-setting but it's just not as strong. I also reinforced mine with some sprue "spars" but they had to be thinned down a little because the wings are quite skinny and would bulge otherwise.

Okay, for the Blackbird lover, this kit is a truly amazing aggregation! I really like this. I grew up around Beal AFB in California. There is no aircraft more magical or mystical than the Blackbird. Your care in addressing these fit issues is very much appreciated! A 1/48 scale Blackbird is a very large kit. Most will always have trouble finding a place to keep it. But with these new parts, I think it makes building this kit a true challenge and worth all the efforts. Your handling of the main wheel well bays is spot on! Trade offs between building and painting are very well done with your suggestions! This Habu is going to look fantastic! Bravo Zulu!

As I said on Focke-Wulf project, I'm starting to clear out the shelf of doom and this project was a parallel to the The Battlefield - The Black Knight of Berlin (part 1) | Album by strobez (1:144) - mainly because the Platz boxes came with two kits in one. However, even though I've long since finished the Black Knight project, the "alternates" have sat warming the shelf ever since. About time I completed them. Truth be told, some of the early pictures in this project are also the same ones published as part of the Black Knight ones... but they're separate projects and represent a twin build process, so I'm hopefully forgiven.

Now with an updated pic. Does anyone else have a problem with Tamiya XF-16 Aluminium getting a bit "splotchy" using Tamiya masking tape? No matter how long I let it dry (and in this case is was almost a whole year!), I always seem to end up removing a bit of the paint and leaving "tape marks" behind. I'll have to remask the coloured bits and give it another coat of XF-16 I think, but what a pain.

Got the decals on. The Platz ones went on like a dream, but for the larger yellow numbering on the engine cowl, I cut up some decals from the Hasegawa F11F kit I had leftover after one of my Area 88 builds (AREA 88: F11F-1 (Gary Macburn) | Project by strobez (1:72)). The ancient decals disintegrated almost instantly on my first attempt. I got it done eventually. Now just the propellor and a few minor adjustments left to work on.

Truth be told, some of the early pictures in this project are also the same ones published as part of the Black Knight ones... but they're separate projects and represent a twin build process, so I'm hopefully forgiven.

Ok... feels better to have an updated pic in the album~ For some reason the paint seems a bit dry and bumpy. I might have to take a microfibre cloth to it.

I thought those panel lines are a bit thick for 1:72 - then I realized its 1:144. Well done to Platz for such a good kit
 3 February, 13:34
Greg Baker
Yeah. The Platz kits are generally beauties. They are a bit of a double-edged sword though. I had a bit of trouble with the painting on this one. I think my airbrush was a bit dirty and I didn't have as much control over the flow of paint as usual. So, after my first attempt at painting a splotchy Luftwaffe camouflage I chalked it up to my lack of skill and repainted it and tried again. The even worse result made me realize that the needle in my airbrush was opening up too much and was making a mess of things. The problem is, after 4-5 coats of paints... undercoat, camo, undercoat again, slight fix, camo, etc. It was starting to look too soft. So I ended up washing all the paint off (and scribing some of the stubborn bits out of those fine panel lines using an old airbrush needle). Needless to say, It was a bit frustrating, but I think I'm ready to try again.

Who or what is meant with "Steinberger" - the pilot?
 20 March 2021, 11:38
Greg Baker
In a flashback scene, the West German pilot Hoover (Kfir) saves the Englishman Benditz (A-4E) from certain death after a MiG-21 gets him in his sights. In gratitude, Benditz offers Hoover a bottle of his favourite German wine, a '76 Steinberger.

It's a neat little scene in the Area 88 manga. Hoover later dies, so Benditz (after being discharged) orders a bottle in Paris and drinks in his memory. At first, the French hotelier is a bit offended that someone would order German wine in France... but she does have a bottle stashed away regardless.

The whole chapter is a touching sidebar story actually. We've never seen Benditz up to that point (he's basically created for the story), but this is an unknown story involving the secondary, but well-known, Hoover. The story follows Benditz's successful discharge from Area 88 after serving his full 3 year mercenary contract and his trip home. Everyone calls him lucky because he's never even been hit, his A-4E is in pristine condition (unlike everyone else's). Then, minutes after finally getting off the plane in Heathrow airport in London, he's stabbed in the chest during a random mugging over a couple of pounds and dies on the floor in a puddle of blood. Meanwhile, back at Area 88, everyone is guessing what "lucky Benditz" must be up to, back in the "real world."

Pulling this one back off the shelf…
 5 July 2023, 06:15
Greg Baker
Ok… might've got ahead of myself on some of the painting, so I'm clawing it back a bit. I'm going to use the same "paint over the decal to blend it" method I did (much more painfully) on my 1/144 F1 project. It mainly just takes a bit more planning up front on placement and colour selection.

Stage one complete - carefully mask decals and paint over them... only time will tell if the tape will pull the decals off. I'm hopeful that so long as the tape doesn't go over the edge of the decal, some careful removal will do the trick.

Bringing this one down off the shelf of doom too… It's only been a year and a half. Luckily I can refer to these WIP pictures to figure out what's next. I think w're pretty close to being done though. Was able to finally mount all three planes. I'm a bit worried that the placement doesn't really tell the story of the A-4 being rescued from the MiG-21 by the Kfir... but there was limited real estate to work with, so I did what I could.

Exceedingly simple little kit of course. I'm using this one to attempt a captured winter livery. Just to try some things out. Assembly is basically done. And it has a pilot. So he's in there. Next I have to mask the canopy and start getting the original Luftwaffe scheme laid down.

I am curious; I have been wanting to do the Matchbox A7 for a long time but are there aftermarket decals for those kits? I can't imagine you're using 50 year old decals for this project.
 24 December 2024, 17:15
Kyle DeHart
No, my kit decals are pretty rough. I bought a sheet. I'll have to look at the manufacturer when I get back home. But, it's just a generic sheet for a 1/72 FW190 A4, it's not specific for this kit. I figure the sizing will at least be in the ballpark.

Wow, that would be hard to build without it. I am betting since it is so new you could contact Mobius directly and they would mail you that tree. I have heard that another of their Ford truck kits got warped hoods. They mailed those out to satisfy their customers.
