an appealing version of the 21...
I am not familiar with this kit. Wait and see 👀
22 December 2022, 17:50

Great! Thanks for all the information, because I was looking for an F-7 or similar variant. Too bad there is no F-7 available in plastic at 1/72.
Following!
22 December 2022, 20:31

KP just released this F-7, but I'm not sure if it's accurate (at least it doesn't seem to be the PG version, according to the box art). What I don't know is if it'll be accurate for the older versions:

@Ben M, I use two hands to handle the airbrush and put the kit in a support.
1 27 February, 05:24

Those straight and true airbrush lines are impressive. I definitely need to try to improve…
1 27 February, 05:55

More details about my pre-shadding: Airbrush Fengda FE-180 with 0.2 needle, Tamiya XF-1 paint diluted with Mr. Hobby Lacquer Thinner around 80-90%, Pressure: 1 bar. The needle has been polished with Tamiya compounds.
5 27 February, 06:19

Wow polishing the needle with Tamiya compounds is quite the idea. I think I will try that! Which compound out of the three are you using for this? I'm assuming it's the finish product.
27 February, 06:58

@Cristian A, you need the 3 compounds: coarse, fine and finish. You will see how smooth will be the needle after coarse polishing. Because chinese airbrush needles are not very well finished.
2 27 February, 09:26

Polishing the needle is a great idea to avoid blotches. But I think it's more a matter of being able to move the airbrush in a perfect straight line and being able to start and stop the paint flow precisely where you want. Something you seem to have mastered.
2 27 February, 09:43

@Thomas, please try to use 2 hands and you will see how much control you gain 😉
3 27 February, 09:58

The more I look at the photos, the more impressed I am. Absolutely stunning paint job - I wish I could ever do something like that.
24 March, 09:15

I can only agree with Thomas. Some mighty nice paint job here - with the preshading particularly impressive. I am afraid that even with three hands and a foot my control wouldn't be sufficient for a similar quality.
Maybe it is still on your to-do-list, but as the instructions are not specific about them (at least thats what I have in the back of my head), I allow myself a reminder to paint the Nav-lights at the wing edges where the dotted triangles are.
24 March, 10:51

Thanks for your nice comments guys. The nav lights are painted near the extreme of leading edge and flaps, and the triangle. I don't know if you are referring to these ones, @Michael Kohl. In the to-do-list, maybe a litle touches with watercolors pencils and some scratches 😉
24 March, 13:03

More about paint-job: there is also post-shading with a lighter color and darker color from the base in zones where the pre-shading were lost.
Weathering: PLW with AK 2073 Sand and Desert Camouflage paneliner, streaking and filter with AMMO Mig Streaking Grime and some fading in panels and foward fuselage with AMO Mig PLW Pacific Dust.
24 March, 13:08

I agree with the mates. Great job. Fantastic painting job and result. Thanks for the info, Servalpe 👍
Congrats!
It's a shame that AMK hasn't released any other 1/72 scale kits, apart from this one and the L-39.
25 March, 19:05

@thanks Cuajete. But I think that is L-29, because I have the kit too 😉

Hi Donald & Maciej 🙂 Thanks for commenting and your interest. Much appreciated mates 👍 Checked out your build Donald - excellent work also! 👍
28 September 2022, 10:44

Tomcat isn't a plane that you can easily build and paint. Especially in 48th scale.
I have always been lazy to splice those pics together after a day's work, I should do it too…
Did I use the correct word "splice"?
I like your profile pic too, got some musical implications 😁
6 October 2022, 02:19

Hi Chan Li, hope you're well thanks for commenting. Yes, hopefully I'll do a decent enough job! I'm using it as a build learning experience to be honest, first Cat I'll have made in 35+ years.
Yeah I just do it to cut down on the size of my albums, as aware my builds are all OOTB so don't wanna bore everyone too much! 😆 Yes, splice will do mate 👍
Yeap love the 80s tunes (before that was considered hip!)
13 October 2022, 19:58

Thumbs up for building this kit 👍 and I m signing in to see how this overall black cat will turn out
18 March 2023, 13:33

A Revell Tomcat - nice! 🙂 Joining the crowd here - some really interesting angles-in-development on doing a full-black finish - looking forward to see where this will lead and how you make it look good & interesting...
18 March 2023, 14:34

Picture 12 to 16 says it all, glad you documented how hard it can be to deal with this kit, but you've made amazing progress also 😄 Can't wait to see finished product 😄
18 March 2023, 20:55

Hi Thomas and Slavo, thanks very much for your interest and commenting. 🙂 I am slowly moving forward with this build, currently on some general touch-ups here and there at the mo prior to a gloss coat and the decals. Hope to get some new images on here soon 👍
27 March 2023, 10:49

Thanks Petar 👍 you're very kind. It's not a particularly accurate rendition anymore, but hopefully the overall effect will be pleasing enough, I'll be glad if it turns out as nice as your Tomcat mate 🙂 thanks for recent likes guys too.
28 March 2023, 20:36

Next album to be updated the Revell 'Black Tomcat'. This is another older build, I started it in 2021 and it's taken me awhile to get around to sorting out some final shots. I may well update these at a later date. I'm not sure about some of the backgrounds on the final images. Hopefully it gives you an idea of the finished result though 👍
The kit isn't the greatest fitting in a few places and I made several build and paint blunders, all of which I attempted to subsequently rectify, some more successfully than others. In the end it became one of those builds I was pleased to just finish. Hahaha! If nothing else, I learnt a lot about how to try and attain a respectable black finish featuring some kind of colour depth - I didn't completely succeed. But this one along with my F-117 and F-19 have all helped me understand how to try and hopefully get some 'flair' into a flat black finish.
If I were to build this kit again I'd likely just go for a straight gloss black as I think no weathering at all would suit the subject better. I apologise again to those who like realistic depictions, as always with my work, it has a basis in reality, but there are paint liberties taken here and there 😉 Anyways, another album closed off 🙂
27 March, 14:20

Oh well, another Beauty Mate.👍 Great work. I´ve heard that painting planes in black it's extremely difficult to attain great results 🤔 but you have the experience and nailed it 👍
1 27 March, 14:31

Nice model 👍 unusual to see a black version....was it for nigh time operations?
Really like the Design of the Tomcat, l Googled "best looking aircraft and the f14 , Starfighter and Su-30 were top of the search.
Nice job, how was the revell kit ?
😃👍
1 27 March, 23:44

Thanks very much talented mates for your interest 🙂 you're all super kind to comment. I'm very pleased that you like my efforts and thanks also to those who have liked too 👍
As far as an all black finish goes, I made quite a few errors, but @Rui I'll take that anyday, especially from someone as skilled as you ☺️
@Mr D, I believe it's a bit of a US Naval tradition. I'm not the best to talk about squadrons etc. Though I am also aware of the same Bunny livery being applied to F4s.... I hope this link is of some help mate...

Great work so far 🍿
Slight off topic I'm interested in the storage you have behind it. Particularly the one between the brush storage and the three tall draws. My question is de you convert another storage to give the racks for your tray things and if so how/what did you convert? I have the same storage system but have not found anything like that rack and it's a great idea I'd like to use.
Cheers and keep the good work going as it's going to be a great model. 👍

Hello Sy Bar.
Thank you.
Do you mean this rack?!

"Removing seams from roadwheels the Jakko way." Thanks for the shout-out 🙂
Though TBH, I find it takes about as long as clamping the wheel in a vice and scraping the seam down — the lathe is less effort but not really a timesaver, IMHO. Could be that's down to my lack of lathing skills, though.
15 January, 09:46

It took a long time but it's fun. Not every day I get to use a lathe.
1 15 January, 13:51

As the kit is missing many parts, l will try 3d printing / scratchbuilding the missing parts. My resin printer isn't a very good one so it can be hard to get things to print correctly.
28 January, 05:31

Quick tip: you don't need to take photos of your screen — press ⇧⌘4 instead 🙂
28 January, 09:57

There is a lot of work to do to remove the supports. I did a quick and dirty pass on one side and it fits perfectly!
I scaled running gear and tracks from a 1:56 stl by 175% to get to 1:32 and it fits properly.
28 January, 23:25

All missing parts 3d printed by upscaling from 1:56 to 1:32. Suspension and tracks won't be glued on til after painting. Same with radio antenna as I'll just break it off if I add it now.
6 March, 03:05

I see you manage to do 3d printing 😮 lucky you. The tracks and bogies look wonderful 👍
1 16 March, 22:56

Pretty soon, with 3D printing, the only limit will be our imagination.
1 17 March, 19:53

That, and the time and effort you want to put into learning how to use the software and the printer … Both of which are what's kept me from wanting to do this myself 🙂
17 March, 21:07

Got kind of an acceptable gloss pink outcome. Respect to the car builders I see on here who put down perfect gloss coats!
2 20 March, 12:32

Painting the one part track and suspension takes a lot. I have literally worn out one brush so far, scrubbing in all the nooks and crannies.

5 December 2024, 18:39

Interesting build and very promising start - I´m in for this 🙂
9 December 2024, 09:13

Interesting approach to simply sand the control surface structure in the primer. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a good result.
18 December 2024, 13:53

As a base for the red color, you need to use yellow, then the red will be bright. If you put red on white, you will get just pink.
18 December 2024, 14:08

Michael, using different primers for one top coat is my idea! The usage of my idea is geBIERenpflichtig! 🙂
18 December 2024, 15:38

Looks like you're the partial member of The Infanous Order of The Pink Primer 😋
18 December 2024, 18:19

@ Nicolas: I cross my fingers too. But looks like I have to do some homework before the final coat (see below 🙂 )
@ Denis: thanks for your input. I tested your suggestion on a scrab wing. With LP-7 I get a nice hue as well over white primer and pink base alike. Problem is that there is almost no difference between them. Over yellow (XF-3) the red receives a rather orange hue which I do not like for this project. But I am optimistic to finetune that and use lighter yellow or buff as base coat and see how that turns out. I'll keep you posted.
@Frank: So, se wollen erheben ne kleene GeBIER?!
In M?! Gruß 🙂
@Lukasz: I applied, but as PartPrimerer I am only allowed into the Entree so far. Full membetship pending. 🙂
Welcome Guy
19 December 2024, 09:52

Yes, I will be interested in what your red color will turn out to be. I recently painted small parts red, but there was a noticeable difference in color, depending on the color of the soil. Perhaps your LP-7 is better.
19 December 2024, 10:09

I tested a couple of base coat variations for LP-7. A nice combination in my eyes is achieved when using Mr. Hobbycolor H413 yellow as base for the darker areas and pink (Tamiya X-17) for the lighter ones. But that would have meant to redo the whole base paint. So I stuck to my combination and mourned the loss of contrast.
21 December 2024, 23:27

Add some white today and it will be perfect Xmas gift just in time 😋
1 24 December 2024, 09:43

Really great job. I appreciate your approach.
I didn`t test different base color. I used GS Aquarius H23 at first piece at black surfacer, and it wasn`t fine. I will use gloss yellow at 2nd piece.
How did you do such perfect wing bottom side. It looks really nice. I had relatively big gap there and some residual step although I precisely brushed big material layer out from both wing half. Maybe, the used glue did a step at the end.
I thing, that this, wings bottom, is weakest part of this model although, as you ar writing, engine nacceles also need some attention.
26 December 2024, 13:04

Welcome mates and thanks for your encouraging and funny comments. Bottomline I am quite happy with the shade of red. I just haven't made up my mind about how gloss it should appear finally. If I would have had access to a cutter I would have scanned the bigger decals and cut masks for painting the letters.
Now what's left are the tail skid and a few bits and pieces at the wings and the stabiliser.
@Jakub: wing assembly requires some scraping and dry fitting. With super thin cement I didn't encounter any issues afterwards. But there still remains a considerable gap towards the flaps and ailerons which I filled with super glue.
1 27 December 2024, 08:21

Thanks mates. Let's see whether the year is still long enough to finish the plane.
1 28 December 2024, 17:59

Nice 👍
Regarding the cutter - you know I can always help here! If you still want to do it may another mate can scan the decals ... or next project.

I agree with everyone; great job, nice result, and I like it very much.
30 December 2024, 21:10

Thank you all for sneaking in.
Couldn't finish it last year, so might be the first to be completed this year.
Wish you all a lot of happy modelling in 2025.

Thanks mates for yor very nice feedback. Is a nice kit. Still pondering about a few details for a little vignette.
5 January, 12:23

The figures and other elements look great. Are they 3D printed or commercial?
13 January, 19:39

Thanks Christoph and Cuajete,
all items are commercial, some classic resin casts, some 3D-printed.
1 13 January, 22:27

The comet turned out beautifully 😊 - excited to see the finished dio my friend 👌🤞
24 January, 08:07

Thank you Thomas.
progress is a bit slow as the last figure I bought needed a decent makeover due to casting imperfections. Same with the barrels I bought. Issues I weren't used to from.Balaton and White Storck Models.
24 January, 13:47

Thanks Alec. Yesterday two figures were painted, the barrels redone and after I went full circle I am back again at the high base which I left for - first a bigger, then a smaller one with different layouts. Now I am confident with the actual concept and I am optimistic that I can still finish it for the Moson Model Show end of april.
1 4 April, 17:03

I like the red headdress; the pump on the barrel looks nice, and I'm getting excited about the completed dio.
14 April, 07:13

Thanks Nick and Jennifer for the heads up. I finished preparing the base and should be able to put things into place within the next days.
14 April, 15:15

Thanks Cuajete. Little by little I inch myself toward the finish line.

Excellent! I have this kit in my stash so I don't only love the pictures but your comments on the building too!

One of my favourite airplanes, in 1:48 as my eyesight is not what it just to be. Model is great so far and I haven't messed anything so far... What can possibly go wrong?
3 April, 18:52

I am sure nothing will go wrong. really looking forward what you do with it (got same kit in my stash... 😉 )
7 April, 21:13

Thanks Spanjaard! For the airfield slabs I use a cheap sandpaper sheet, 100 I think it is.
7 April, 21:29

I like your "over engineered" solution for the airfield slabs. Mind if I use it as inspiration for my own project? 😉
8 April, 12:24

René, this is why we share ours WIP, to inspire each other and make a dent on the stash. I must confess I got the idea from someone else long time ago. It looks great once painted, and cheaper and more satisfying than buying anything specific for dioramas.
8 April, 14:48

@carlos martin
Yes, I know, but it's always better to ask and to give credit where it's due instead of just "ripping off" the ideas of others. 🙂

Working on my concept for the Diorama.

This may be no consolation, but it is the same issue with the Revell Samba bus.

Oh, that are a lot of ejection marks!
For raised ones I use a scalpel nr 15, if there is enough space around. In the middle of pic 1 are some with tight structures around. Here I would use a model chisel like this one (example, there are different sizes): Chisel F2 (Master Tools 09924, No)
Deepened ones can be closed with round pieces of styrene (made with punch and die, in the matching diameter.
1 26 October 2024, 19:19

The X-Acto #17 chisel blade is also excellent for removing ejector pin marks. It can be used in the normal chisel angle as well as perpendicular to the surface as a scraper. #17 Lightweight Chiseling Blades - 5 Pcs (X-ACTO X217, No)

The metal floor should be corrugated on a type 2, so another approach would be to hide them under corrugated panels.

26 October 2024, 19:56

Thank you so much for the comments. I'm in the middle of removing them. Some of them are really high. I use everything I have on the hand (Saw, chisel, scalpel, sandpaper). For some I even used a dremel (really cautious) Even if i would hide the behind corrugated panels (God idea by the way) I still have to remove them before.
You can see in the next picture how high there are. Ione was almost 1mm

I'm liking those plates. I applaud anyone, who tries to advance their skills. And you did it right, by trying this on the bottom first.
10 November 2024, 12:21

Personally, I think that a bit more, would work. Anyone who's owned or worked on an old VW, knows that they're covered in rust. However, you've mastered that technique and it's worked beautifully!
Keep at it, and good luck 👍
22 December 2024, 11:36

Yeah air cooled vws tend to be very rusty - you nailed it! Mine literally had holes in the footwell area in front. I used an air chisel to cut the skin off an old hot water tank found by the side of the road and used the sheet metal to patch my floo
22 December 2024, 11:50

That body looks too good to spoil. Excellent work so far. You have me captivated.

Working on the Concept of my Diorama. I never build one before, The Barrels and Jerry Cans are 3D printed. The rims are from an old kit I build, but didn't survive one of my moves. The bumber was in the Hasegawa Kit. The wooden Fence is not finished.
1 4 April, 17:08

Absolutely fantastic! And thanks for adding comments, really enjoyable to spin through the album. Congrats.
4 April, 17:12

Very happy to see this moving forward. I'm liking what I see! You don't have to spend millions on special parts, for a diorama, most of the time, you've got the stuff, laying around the house? You just need to think outside the box?
Excited to see the outcome of this, now it's nearing completion 🙂

I spent the last week working on this one. Still needs a little more weathering, a little touch up and antenna added. Pretty close to complete...
4 April, 02:54

The Tamiya kit is amazing. The features of having the cowling open (or closed) just by taking the prop off and then removing the closed cowling and replacing it with the open cowling is awesome. I was fretting which way to make the kit, but this is not a choice I had to make. It's made with both options simultaneously and configured as needed for display!
4 April, 03:03

Thanks! The mottling is really kinda unpredictable depending on the paint I use. Right now, I am running out of the Model Master Luftwaffe colors so I am switching over to the Mr. Hobby Aqueous colors. They are really fine for sure!
1 4 April, 04:00

There are a great many items consisting of a piece of ground and a wall or two. They are obviously meant to be used to display vehicles or figures. The majority are today classed as "Buildings".
Would it not be more appropriate to place these as topic "Display Bases", or is that reserved just for flat surfaces?
If left as "Buildings", should they also have Topic "Pavement" (or whatever), since they are really more or less 50-50, and both parts are important?

I put them under "Display bases", but, as I said earlier, it is open to interpretation.
