Absolutely impressive model and very stylish presentation. Are these the kits clear parts? The look thin and very transparent.
@ Dave: according to the description it is the Heller kit.

I've made a start on this one as well. I've cut both the stabilisers from the hull as they were way too thick.
This is a very crude kit, not like other kits from Schatton modellbau I have in my stash. The LMB mine is even worse, so I've binned it.

The result probably has more to do with the poor state of the original kit rather than your modelling abilities, so I think you've done well to get it looking as presentable as you have. The parts you have replaced and added are significantly better than the original kit part. It always intrigues me when you see these old machines in museums that the surfaces are very often as rough as old boots rather than the perfect finish we often try to achieve.
Also, macro is a complete git. A photo of that from a normal viewing distance would probably look good.

I gotta admit, I really like that frame colour. Noted for the future!
When I checked out my kit, I noticed that the hood was in 2 pieces? We're there any issues with that? Like, did you have to add extra support or did it align up ok? One thing that I always do, before I commit to paint, is check out the alignment of the grill and air cleaners, etc? Same with the body and the stacks. Italeri use some brackets for the positioning the stacks, which I always try to add, before I shoot any paint? Sometimes they need a little bit of filling.
 28 January, 23:11
Kenneth Gifford
The hood is in 2 pieces yes but there is an air intake tube piece that goes inside the hood that holds it together along with the overlap going down the center. It's turns out very rigid. That frame color is tamiya grey violet.

You know guys who is the most curious on what and how I am gonna do? Me 😄 My philosophy is "just start, ask questions later". It is the most enjoyable approach, you encounter problems on the go, you find solutions, try new techniques and create new ideas. Which is very rewarding. And in the end you have a nice result. Not a perfect one, but one you can look back on and smile or shake your head...

Okay, for the Blackbird lover, this kit is a truly amazing aggregation! I really like this. I grew up around Beal AFB in California. There is no aircraft more magical or mystical than the Blackbird. Your care in addressing these fit issues is very much appreciated! A 1/48 scale Blackbird is a very large kit. Most will always have trouble finding a place to keep it. But with these new parts, I think it makes building this kit a true challenge and worth all the efforts. Your handling of the main wheel well bays is spot on! Trade offs between building and painting are very well done with your suggestions! This Habu is going to look fantastic! Bravo Zulu!

For the F9F-2P "Panther" (Trumpeter 02833, 1:48)
it is indicated that the color should be FS35042, which is grey

02833

I think this should be : FS15042, which is gloss sea bleu.

Probably a typing mistake but as I am not familiar how to change this, and there is a chance that I am wrong, I note this here for someone better with the scalemates system to check and possibly correct
1 12 February, 10:28
Eddie Mann
Yes, instructions show Mr Color 365 which is Gloss Sea Blue, FS15042. Changed.
You can change this in the "Markings" options.
 12 February, 12:20

Eddie wrote: "You can change this in the "Markings" options."

Thanks, but it may lead to some confusion if everybody (like me) would start changing the dbase 🙂
1  12 February, 12:58
Goldman
As far as I know the first digit in the FS numbers is the level of sheen: 1=Gloss, 2=Satin, 3=Matt. They hue should remain the same.
 12 February, 14:39
Francky
@Goldman: I think you are correct. Also according to the info I have, those planes in Korean war times were indeed gloss with a paint composition reducing the fast degradation of the paint during world war II.
 13 February, 09:52
Francky@SCM Data suggestions
Searching for the FS35042 color in different ways gives very different results. As example:

SCM Search: FS35042
scalemates.com/colors/colorc..99&r=all#similar&l=1

Is this an error, or am I not understanding something?
1 12 February, 10:40
scalemates
Do you mean the similar section showing colors not perfectly matching the FS color?

Some modelers go for a lighter shade anyway, depending on the area you need paint (eg. something small difficult to see inside the cargo area) one of your colors in stash is close enough for you to make that work...
 13 February, 06:14
scalemates
especially in combo with the "my ranges" feature it will tell you those paints being close to your target color and in your preferred range (eg. Tamiya)
 13 February, 06:17
Francky
When i use this link:

scalemates.com/colors/colorc..99&r=all#similar&l=1

I get a color chip and a series of similar colors: like freight stock grey, dark grey .... etc

When I use this link through the search box:

SCM Search: FS35042

I get a completely different set of similar colors

This may be correct because you are using different algorithms intending to have a different effect, but I don't understand that searchign the same color in two different ways delivers such different results.

Having built a few of these kits I find it best to sperate the declas, the decal sheet has them seperated for roof, bonnet etc and I find it best to have them seperate as it gets confusing, just take your time and build up the layers, looking good and loving the modifications you do

Just a few teeth marks mate, but enough material for what I need 😉 She said they're called "Yours" as she limped into the taxi 🙂

@Alexander I don't know because I got it from my girlfriend 😉
If the stocking is pulled too much, the CF pattern will not form properly.

nice duo, looking great! well built.
are there some issues with this kits? never heard about them.
 13 February, 08:39
Spence Wilson
@Dominik Weitzer no issues at all. Actually these were a lot of fun to build and put together. No more difficult than your average high end resin kits. I think PZY/Kitbox are still pretty new to the modeling scene and are a little more difficult to find. You have to join their FB group to really have any access to them as they don't sell in a lot of retail shops and they don't have a website at all.

You could cut the canopy using the front sliding piece in the middle like in photo 5 (does that make sense?) That way you won't have to mask it all and you can see all the work inside.
 31 July 2023, 14:41
Matthew A
Or you could use a paint marker pen to paint the frames
 31 July 2023, 14:47
Lochsa River
Thank you for those helpful suggestions! I will try both ways to make this work.

As far as the sliding canopy is concerned...it appears the rear canopy is slid in place over the center piece in photo 5....is the front portion just not in place at all? it does not appear to be slide backwards into the center....
 1 August 2023, 05:47
Lochsa River
...or is it the opposite with the front portion slide back and rear portion not installed? Or are both slid into place and it just does not show well? photo search to follow.
 1 August 2023, 05:52
Matthew A
The observers canopy is in two parts and slides forward under the centre section, the pilots canopy slides back over the lot- it's all rather cleaver

Rigging with the Starfighter Decals rigging photoetch is fun and usually works well...this SBC-3/4 set used here, may be the last known copy in the known universe...looking at the aircraft, it should be fairly simple for a good modeler to scratchbuild it...the kit is excellent in many ways, is inexpensive and there are a number of decal sets available...

How well did the EZ Rigging work for you? What challenges did you face with the rigging?
 12 February, 21:23

I'm pretty sure that the kit was first issued in the 60s. I saw a boxart picture on worthpoint of the 1st issue, or was it Pinterest?? Couldn't download the image. This 3rd edition features a chain kit of separate links which I think was a new feature. The old protar kits are let down by a rubber band final drive!

Tim Jacobs@SCM Data suggestions
While working on the ResKit updates, I noticed a lot of inconsistency on how pilots are categorized. Many are put under the topic of the specific aircraft, while others are under [country], Soldiers, and some are multi-topic with both acft and Soldier. There's one that has three topics - acft, Soldier, and ejection seat.

Does the community have a standard on how we should handle these so we're consistent?

examples:
acft
F-105 (F, G) "Thunderchief" ..d) (ResKit RSF72-0058, 1:72)
Soldier
A-7 Corsair II female pilot ..s) (ResKit RSF72-0043, 1:72)
multi-topic
A-7 Corsair II female pilot ..s) (ResKit RSF48-0055, 1:48)
3 topic
A-7 (A, B, D, E) Corsair II ..n) (ResKit RSF48-0045, 1:48)

I brought this up some time ago, and was told that figures for a particular plane/vehicle should be put in that topic. This would put the A-7 pilots into A-7 etc.
1  11 February, 22:36
scalemates
+1

And we should avoid multitopics if possible.

If there is one figure in the box, it can't be multitopic. It should be assigned to the most specific topic (Corsair) and not to one of the generic catch all topics

If you search for Female Pilot in 1:48 you will find all pilots nicely categorised in their "intended" use. If you think a Pilot from the "wrong" topic fits your needs (=go for it) because it looks similar (or even is the same) go for it 🙂

SCM Search: female pilot
