Tyrell P34
Nice artwork!
What’s inside
Moulds look crisp but I was later to find out looks can be deceiving.
Seam lines? What seam lines! Thank goodness for my SMS ceramic scraper! Gunna need it!
Typical Tamiya chrome. Very thin.
I use a glass sander for remaining sprue nubs.
Very useful tools. My most used tool is the ceramic scraper from SMS. It won’t leap frog and gouge the plastic like a metal blade will. Best $14 I ever spent!
Body parts
Side pod radiators before being upgraded.
Plastic bolt heads removed with a chisel.
One done
A few details never hurt.
Now which do I choose?
I give thought to where to put the ignition cables. Sure you could just replicate the original, and that is difficult enough but I like to make it not just visible but pleasing to the eye. Original cables were black and ran along the tappet covers. Practical but not pretty. I ended up going with the blue and having them fan into the tappet covers like curling rib bones.
This is where I came to grief. The injector stands were just so thin and brittle I actually broke a couple and parked the project until I could find another kit at a reasonable price.
I found a set of decal seatbelts squireled away and they just happened to be blue. Spanjaard told me about setting them onto tin foil so … Thanks Spanjaard!
SMS 2k clear.
Ready to restart this project!
Found a cheap kit so on with the show!
I went with brown fuel lines as they were more visible than clear lines. The bright green tubes let me avoid trying to drill out the injector stands.
Crazy modeller pe zip ties for the ignition wires.
The exhaust I found difficult to line up and never did so successfully.
If you look carefully you can see the exhaust does not line up.
All done!

How did you find the engine/gearbox fit? Did you get it to come out straight? Everytime I build one of these ancient Tamiya DFVs, damn things always come out askew.

Askew it is! Both exhaust extensions had to be shortened and the headers hugged the block too closely. Pic 53 will confirm I had the same issue as you. I have another P34 in the stash but I NEED to build a couple of bikes after I have completed a Bugatti Town Car.

Yeah, those old things are awful. I tried twice to do the Peterson version of this car and both times I wound up tossing that crap back in the box. At least with a bike kit theres no worry about thousand year old moulds.

A great job Peter. I like these older Tamiya kits as a back-to-basics in between build. I know they're not 100% accurate and lack a certain refinement.
But they do give me the opportunity to build kits from my youth, that I always wanted to build, but with a lot more skill on my side.

It looks great as a model but definitely not my favourite F1 car, I think Tyrell had a very good relationship with Tamiya at the time.

If the model wasn't on a cutting board, i would have believed it was a 1/1 scale. Magnificent
