Had a lot of German influence in construction. Nearly all examples destroyed. 1 in a museum built back from parts .

I like the detail of the HUD display unit, it looks like the one out of the bf-109 mor than the IAR-80 , but nice to have...l know they got alot of stuff from Germany as allies, so not impossible ?

Hobbyboss typically flawed instructions!! Could catch out beginners!! Painting essential/ visible internal areas not mentioned in instructions or colour sheets.
Anyone building HB needs bit of experience as instructions poor.

See the interior was light grey/blue, the IAR book said light blue too, HB being bit lazy with colour research!!

HB put one of the matching pins in the wrong place !!
I checked n double checked, but one had to be sanded off.
All engine cylinders, sockets, number match up now.
Come on HB build as part of your Q.C.

Not bad fit...no big gaps, HB got this right, a little of under-wing visible through cockpit, so will need grey paint ( not mentioned in instructions)!!

Looking into wings now, nice fit not much gap.
I dry fit the wing-sides and tape one edge when a nice fit.
I then open like a book,.... Add glue and close....this way no fiddling round to get neat fit

Engine construction done now, some very small gaps on cylinder heads, but I'm sure paint will fill ..as tiny.
You can see where HB has had broken tool n repaired it ..oil line sections.
Went together reasonably ok.

Painted Radial engine.. only bit of front will be seen through cowling
p.s. if you want something bit sticker than blue-tak... Pink -Tak holds better....but bit softer.

I use a thick acrylic artist paint to fill small gaps, it's less messy than putty and sands really well following day,
And behaves well with acrilic paints.

Canopy on the clear gorilla glue is invisible, lve found PVA to be a bit milky,
I tend to do closed canopy,s to keep dust out and l like to see cockpit as a little time capsule once sealed.
The bit sticking up on top of the canopy is a Rear view mirror...so l will use chrome pen for mirror and the chrome on shock absorber's

Cockpit mask done, the large area has mask fluid on as had to use a number of thin strips of tape to match bubble curvature.
I find progress picks up a bit after cockpit mask.

I make small spru number labels for any parts that could go on the wrong way or upside down!!
Can happen ? Peter Oxley of YouTube put his Zero legs on wrong way. I put nose wheel doors on L & R wrong... So done this since.

Naughty Naughty HB !!
The Ailerons were marked (34) (1) to wrong way round!
I marked them with spru number separately as l took the of the spru, so l know l didn't get it wrong.
This is the kid of thing that lets HB down, lve come across things like this with them before.
Could catch a beginner out ?

This 1x heavy thinned coat of the AK Intense white, it's a game changer... I would have to do 3 good coats with my Velejo to get this coverage.

Wheel painting time, l used a blue tack mask and carefully shaped with cocktail stick.
As l don't have any circle ⭕ cutter's.
It worked...bit slow progress.

Hi, Does anyone have any idea if those holes in the wheel area of the weel-bay look correct??
They seem bit strange to me and I'm not sure if it's accurate, has anyone seen anything similar?

Getting some paint sorted now, not been easy to find colour reference for this one, but luckily....there is a museum aircraft in Romania, l found pic's of.
HB was quite out on its colours!!

Getting the underside light white/blue 90/10mix
Im going to use it as a base for the yellow areas as it's so light.
Used my new airbrush....but think it's come with big jet as spread was very wide....I'm trying to find my way with airbrushing ?

It's an extremely light blue on the bottom, the wheel wells were a grey/blue some as cockpit interior on the original one.
And the nose cone was 50/50 black n yellow...to note movement, Germany idea.

Has a very light blue... almost white underside, has a skid instead of tail wheel, most took of from Fields

Had to come up with an a funky way to jig for painting ? underside.....l have to spray the light colours on top side at same time...as I'm going to use the light white/blue as a primer for yellow areas.
Ps the sponge's act as a good protector it the model accidently falls... sponge lands first, they be coming of soon for wing tip paint.

Got my colour pre mixed, l get empty 30ml paint pots and pre mix, l usually have extra left for touching up or future projects.
Colours are mixed a little lighter...as oil wash will darken down a stage

Up into now l really struggled to find a good yellow and white paint, my previous yellow n whites needed multiple coats to get good pigment coverage....then details were lost!!
I watched many videos on recommend pints and found the AK 3rd gen intense colour's...... Brilliant ?? can get it sorted in one go now.

Getting the Romanian yellow sorted, cowling, bottom wing tips, back stripe, nose cone will be black n yellow 50/50.
This is AK Intense yellow & white mix.
Fantastic paint ....this is X1 application.

Got myself a painting jig now £8 of AliExpress... with X10 clip-rods.
Makes life so much easier ???
Used bit of masking fluid too ...as could see some tape lifting.

This is a replica been made up for a Romanian museum, l think HB has probably based it model on this. The blue underside is to bright a blue and brown was bit darker.

Thanks, Appreciate the interest, lm reality new to the hobby about 14 months, finding my way with techniques.
Weathering n panel lines need more learning.
The IAR-80 was decent price from HB and liked the paint scheme...bit different

They said to paint interior charcoal black like on the FW-190.
But l checked n the Romanian lAR interior was grey/blue.
Engine building next 6 parts deal.

A small amount of the wing is seen through bottom of cockpit, the HB instructions didn't mention painting it first!!
But the fit of the model be ok so far.

Hi, Yes lve used it alot and holds up really well , l find the fillers a bit messy and more trouble than it's worth on small gaps.
You do need to allow overnight drying with it for best sanding results.

Yes it has a habit of filling in panel lines n bits not necessary!!
This technique is same as using alot of paint to fill a gap or high build primer ect...just becomes part of the paint layer as it acrylic too.
But it's not for big gaps!! As there is a bit of shrinking overnight.
Be onto marking rivets next step after sanding... Then need to make choices on open or closed canopy???

Ive got the canopy on now, HB do nice clear glass, so I'm having a closed cockpit,
So bit of masking to do there next.

Thanks Miguel, the pen needs a good shake prior to use , if it awkward area you can pump some out n use brush...but work fast.
Best to put a clear over next day as it's bit delicate.

Do not forget that the mast of the antenna passes through the windshield and is very clearly visible. This model may come in handy in my albums

Ok thanks Alexander, HB didnt make the Mast installation very clear, the show it just glued on the top, will be very weak!! I've seen one build and it's come away!!
I'm going to use steel rod.

after fall of iron curtain, the Soviet's used them as training aircraft last flown in 1952.
