Waterloo GP - McLaren MP4-20

I just dug this kit out from my stash after I felt a jolt of motivation to build some car finally. However, after spending some time on reviewing the sprues and trying dry-fitting some of the body parts, I found out I probably won't be able to finish this kit in a form that would satisfy me 🙁 The kit is not that old (2005), but the engineering of this Formula1 kit is not ideal in my opinion, the seams are all over the place, and what's worst, in places I can hardly imagine fixing them to get a good surface for the McLaren's livery from that era.

I couldn't imagine investing my time into building it only to find myself 20 hours later in an impasse due to a problem I'm unable to fix... I guess it's a bit better to trash a kit before spending some valuable time on trying to make something out of it, I silently accepted the defeat here this time. But - I didn't want to trash it just like that, I spent 2 hours today afternoon in speed-building that thing, it's not that bad as it seemed at first, but still, you will see on the other images here, this is not a shake-and-bake type of kit.

I'll keep it as a test bed for paints for my future builds - or, if my son shows interest and won't be that sad it's not painted, I'll gift it to him 😄. 

 

The worst parts are visible here, seams all over the place, fixing them on a 48th airplane build would be a must, but here, at 24th scale, it's even worse. And don't forget, you want a glass-like surface for painting a Formula1 car that is getting zero amount of weathering in the end, every blemish is going to shine out. 

 

C'mon Revell, just two exhaust pipes going out of nowhere, not even a rough replica of the engine?!! 

The back would require a lot of work to get it into a proper shape imho. 

The rear axle area would also need a lot of love and attention...
