hi mates,
just started this bird
a lot of ejector marks need some surgery on the air intakes
14 January 2018, 10:42
Konrad -
A lot of work from the very beginning. But in the end it will be worth. 👍
14 January 2018, 11:01
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Konrad 🙂 hope it will...
indeed a lot of work - I added a small part of styrene were the gun muzzle will be placed, to avoid a tricky seam there when mounting the upper and under half together
14 January 2018, 14:29
Konrad -
As I see I will take your build as reference for my future Eagle build 😉.
14 January 2018, 15:49
Stephan Ryll
You are welcome Konrad 🙂

Nice work and choice Stephan! One of the "Queen's own" 👍
14 January 2018, 22:04
Stephan Ryll
Adam your welcome 🙂
Thank you Erik - can you please explain the „queen's own" - I have a guess but I'm not sure 🙂
15 January 2018, 19:58
Erik Leijdens
Well, it's the only American squadron who was under direct control of the Dutch Airforce, that's why the Wolfhounds(32TFS) squadron badge, just like Dutch squadrons, is adorned with the wreath and crown of the Royal Family. It was the "Queens own" USAFE squadron 🙂
15 January 2018, 20:20
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Erik for bringing some light into that 🙂

In 1959, the 32nd became the only USAF unit
in the world to wear the royal crest of another
country, when the Crown and Wreath of the
Royal House of Orange were added to the
famed Wolfhound design.
This unique honor was granted in recognition
of the unit's contributions to the
defense of The Netherlands and
graphically illustrates the 32nd's close ties
with the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Because
of that distinction, as well as the fact that
Camp New Amsterdam is located just a few
miles from the Royal Palace in Soestdijk, the
squadron is referred to as "the Queen's own."

taken from their website...

more information could be found here, quite interesting stuff there

you learn something new every day! Tks
16 January 2018, 17:17
playtime 222
I'll be following this one too. Had noticed a few things after. Clipped off the spare parts from the sprues and did a bit of test fitting.
16 January 2018, 19:17
Stephan Ryll
Yes indeed Timothy - everyday something new 🙂
Thank you playtime 222 🙂 Test and dry fit is very important regarding this kit

Maciej your welcome 🙂

Maciej Bellos
Thanks Stephan. Academy's Eagle is notoriously tricky when it comes to the intakes. I have found somewhere a way to tackle them. I'll post it when I find it. In the meantime I will be studying your approach for whenever I start my own (the -E version)
18 January 2018, 19:07
Stephan Ryll
David you're welcome 🙂
@ Maciej, yes indeed the intakes are very tricky - I did a lot of dry fitting and sanding to get them into shape.
I will continue with that build Next week after my returne from San Diego - so stay tuned 🙂
19 January 2018, 00:03
Stephan Ryll
Hi mates,
after a break I had some progress with this build. 🙂
I closed the upper and lower main hull of this bird - and yes it needs some putty 🤔
on the wings I missing the spaces for the anti collision and position lights - that will need some little scratch build I think
28 January 2018, 12:55
Stephan Ryll
yesterday I started the cockpit compartment - to be honest its an PE battle
31 January 2018, 16:30
Konrad -
Yes, but it looks like a very nice PE battle 😉
31 January 2018, 17:50
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Konrad 🙂 much appreciated
31 January 2018, 18:31
Jens
Very nice progress Stephan 👍 Eduard ist ja doch nicht immer Alles, was da noch an Nacharbeiten anliegt, lässt doch überlegen ob sich der Kauf lohnt
31 January 2018, 18:54
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Jens 🙂
Ein bisschen was ist ja immer 😉 ich geb dir aber Recht - man muss abwägen ob man da noch Nacharbeit reinstecken will, oder den Bausatz lieber stehen lässt
1 February 2018, 16:08
Tim Heimer
Nice!
3 February 2018, 16:05
Kees Kleijwegt
A Soesterberg Eagle, following! Nice work on the cockpit
3 February 2018, 16:51
Murad ÖZER
This is coming along awesome Stephan! 👍
3 February 2018, 17:35
playtime 222
Wow. All that PE is quite intimidating.
3 February 2018, 18:13
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Timothy, Kees, Murad and playtime 222 🙂 you're all welcome
Your comments are much appreciated
@playtime don't worry - with a little patience and a good superglue it' not a problem 🙂
3 February 2018, 18:25
Konrad -
I love this kind of PE - Parts! Great work Stephan 👍
3 February 2018, 18:35
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Konrad 🙂 much appreciated
3 February 2018, 18:56
Donald Dickson II
I did the version pictured on the box cover with the Tamiya kit. I have an Academy sitting in the stash. I also have done the Revell E version. Neither of those were much better with the intakes.

I love yours sir! The PE is looking great!
3 February 2018, 19:09
Soeren R.
Nice cockpit!😉
3 February 2018, 19:11
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Donald and Sören 🙂
@ Donald - the intakes will need some patience and pressure to fit 🤔
3 February 2018, 19:24
Clifford Keesler
Looking very nice Stephan.very nice cockpit.
3 February 2018, 20:29
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford, your comment is much appreciated🙂
3 February 2018, 20:36
Erik Leijdens
Nice work there Stephan. I have this kit in the stash too so I will come back often. Looks like I have to concentrate on the inlets.
3 February 2018, 21:21
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Erik 🙂
The next challenge will be the marriage of the main and nose section 🤔
Don't forget about enough weight in the nose - and don't trust the instructions about glueing the nose halfs first and then add the cockpit section - if you do so you will loose all the PE parts on the right cockpit side
So dry fitting is your friend 😉
3 February 2018, 21:29
Spanjaard
going really nice Stephan
3 February 2018, 23:12
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Spanjaard 🙂
4 February 2018, 07:44
Clifford Keesler
What kit is that boxing based on Stephan?
5 February 2018, 00:31
Donald Dickson II
Cliff, I was thinking Academy...
5 February 2018, 01:53
Michael Phillips
Looking great so far, count me in!
5 February 2018, 02:47
Stephan Ryll
@ Clifford - yes indeed it the Academy kit with some add ones from Eduard

Thank you Michael, you are very welcome - take a seat 🙂
5 February 2018, 16:42
Konrad -
Nice exhaust. This eduard kits are amazing stuff. 🙂
5 February 2018, 17:48
Stephan Ryll
Konrad I agree - compared with the Academy stuff they are amazing 🙂
5 February 2018, 19:00
Hanno Kleinecke
Lots of brass involved ! Cockpit looks great and those „mufflers" are just fantastic.
5 February 2018, 19:00
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Hanno 🙂 hope the brass will survive the paint process 😄
5 February 2018, 19:51
Clifford Keesler
Thanks for the info Donald and Stephan.
6 February 2018, 23:20
Stephan Ryll
Your welcome Clifford 🙂

managed to fit the front fuselage to the main fuselage - needed some putty and sanding - but its done 🙂
7 February 2018, 16:46
Donald Dickson II
Doesnt look like it was too bad...
7 February 2018, 18:22
Stephan Ryll
Well Donald 🙂 not so bad is the right definition - finally it's done and the join is strong enough
7 February 2018, 18:38
Clifford Keesler
Looking good.
8 February 2018, 03:40
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford 🙂 the other side is also done - you can also see the white styren part in the gun muzzle - which makes things a lot easier🙂
8 February 2018, 16:35
Erik Leijdens
Great work Stephan! Will copy your work on my Eduard F-15 🙂
8 February 2018, 18:24
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Erik 🙂 glad that you like my presentation
8 February 2018, 19:08
Stephan Ryll
Yep and here we go with the first big issue - the Eduard parts for the engines are much to small 🤔
2 mm are missing in diameter - that will be a sanding and rescribing party
9 February 2018, 17:55
Konrad -
That's not good but you'll make it that it looks good at the end 👍
9 February 2018, 18:27
Maciej Bellos
Whoa! That's tough...
9 February 2018, 18:53
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Konrad and Maciej - I'll do my very best 😄
9 February 2018, 19:01
Erik Leijdens
Hmm that is "mooi kut" (in Dutch). Good luck fixing it..
9 February 2018, 19:45
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Erik - due to the fact that I'm only 20 kilometers away from the dutch border I'm with you 😄
I will try to fix this - did somebody ever build this kit ?
9 February 2018, 20:41
Clifford Keesler
I know you will get it worked out.I
9 February 2018, 22:34
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford for the motivating words 🙂 - I think the sanding is done - I´ll have to buy some new now 😉- air intakes also mounted
10 February 2018, 13:35
Spanjaard
great work on those intakes
10 February 2018, 14:00
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Spanjaard 🙂 - the fit was quite nice - much better then the aft section 😄
10 February 2018, 14:05
Spanjaard
the aft section had a lot of work, but looks terrific now 🙂
10 February 2018, 14:15
Stephan Ryll
Thank you for your motivating words 🙂 I'm quite happy with the result
10 February 2018, 14:21
Donald Dickson II
They turned out great! Good work!
10 February 2018, 16:13
Maciej Bellos
You did your best!
10 February 2018, 16:58
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Donald and Maciej 🙂 that motivation me for the next steps
10 February 2018, 18:06
Konrad -
Yep the result looks indeed very nice. Keep up the great work. 👍
10 February 2018, 19:30
Erik Leijdens
Great work Stephan! Sanding/Scribing of the fuselage part I presume?
10 February 2018, 19:44
Stephan Ryll
Thank you mates 🙂 next update will be on monday- have do celebrate some carnival 😄
10 February 2018, 19:58
Clifford Keesler
Excellent job.
11 February 2018, 02:06
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford - much appreciated🙂
11 February 2018, 09:02
Stephan Ryll
Added some more PE parts to the main hull - still some more parts to add 🤔
11 February 2018, 16:31
Stephan Ryll
Her the presume of the necessary sanding and scribing action in the engine cowling area
The exhaust parts are 1.5 mm smaller than the acedemy plastic - therefore I had to sand down this area nearly to zero - the panellines of the upper and lower cowling we're gone - so rescribing this area was necessary - all in all 2 hours of work
12 February 2018, 10:00
playtime 222
The more I read this thread, the further I push my box further into the back of the stash cupboard!!! Expected less challenges from the Academy plastic than this TBH 😄
12 February 2018, 10:41
Stephan Ryll
Don't worry playtime 222 🙂 it's my plan to build the „E" version of this kit when I'm done with that
This has two advantages 😉 I get rid of those kits and I train my skills -or my nerves 😄
12 February 2018, 11:54
playtime 222
I have both too 😄 And look forward to them to be honest, warts and all.
12 February 2018, 21:03
Jan Hazes
Will be following this one. I have the kit in my stash but still have to muster up the courage to start it. Used to spot these birds at Soesterberg when I was teenager. A few years later I was controlling them🙂
12 February 2018, 21:12
Bryn Crandell
Keeping an eye on this one.
13 February 2018, 03:01
Stephan Ryll
Your are all welcome mates 🙂
@ Jan - same effect at me - the first time I got to an airshow was 1972 when I was 6 years old
The show took place at the RAF Wildenrath - with Vulcans - Harrier - Red Arrows - Lightnings and much more - when I was 17 I started to build real airplanes - 😄
If it gets you - It gets you 😉
13 February 2018, 08:28
Clifford Keesler
It's looking better all the time.
15 February 2018, 23:28
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford 🙂
Your comment motivates me to attach the wings - dryfitting showed that they will need some putty on the underside
16 February 2018, 14:35
Stephan Ryll
Wings are attached 🙂 only a little putty on the underside was needed - so not much to deal with
16 February 2018, 19:05
David Thor
Beautiful work on the details. This will be a great build, keep it up!
16 February 2018, 19:12
Stephan Ryll
Thank you David for your motivating comment 🙂 a lot of work left to do - I will do my best 😉
16 February 2018, 20:26
Stephan Ryll
May something you have to deal with upfront adding the tailfinns to the main body 😄
the size of the connection pins on the tailfinns are 1 mm the opening in the main hull is 2 mm 🤔
so you have to add some styrene to get a proper connection
18 February 2018, 10:30
Maciej Bellos
Lots of tips on this one. Man, Academy could have done a better job...
18 February 2018, 11:17
Stephan Ryll
You're right Maciej - there's is some room for improvements 😄 - but till now, nothing you can't deal with😉
So each build of this kit will be a unique copy 😉
18 February 2018, 13:41
Eelco Gregoire
He looks really great!
19 February 2018, 18:13
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Eelco and James 🙂
Still a lot of work to do 🤔
19 February 2018, 18:54
Erik Leijdens
NICE! Really looking forward to see the end result
19 February 2018, 19:21
Clifford Keesler
Looking very very nice sir.
19 February 2018, 20:03
Stephan Ryll
Thank you both Erik and Clifford - that gives me some motivation for the NMF on the engine areas ;s
Hope that everything will stay were it should be when I pull off the tape 😄
19 February 2018, 20:35
Soeren R.
Very nice Progress Stephan.
20 February 2018, 05:58
Konrad -
A very nice build Stephan! As mentioned before I'll take your build as reference for mine 😉!
20 February 2018, 09:16
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Sören and Konrad, your comments are much appreciated 🙂
20 February 2018, 18:45
playtime 222
What Mr Limmer said 😄 I know it's late for this build but another suggestion for the locating hole could be to fill the fuselage spine it sits in from the inside if it wobbles after adding the scrap card for widening the tab.
21 February 2018, 12:38
Stephan Ryll
Thank you for your comment 🙂 playtime 222 - I will try to get into that with the E version

Today's goal was to add some metal colour for the engine cowlings - when the colour is dry I will add a clear coat to protect this area
21 February 2018, 18:56
Konrad -
The metal painting progress looks fine! Are you using Alclad ??
21 February 2018, 19:00
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Konrad 🙂 I use the Vallejo metal colours - easy to use and the result is quite good - hope it stays on the surface 😄
21 February 2018, 19:07
Clifford Keesler
You will get it.
21 February 2018, 19:11
Konrad -
Of course the primer coat looks good enough to let everything on place 👍!
21 February 2018, 19:15
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford and Konrad 🙂
I will give the coat one more day to dry - so I can start to build up the landing gear
21 February 2018, 20:22
Stephan Ryll
todays goal reached 🙂 - clear coat on metal colour - added some highlights - when everything is dry I will mask the whole area and start with the first surface coat FS36300
22 February 2018, 16:54
Clifford Keesler
looking very nice.
22 February 2018, 18:28
Stephan Ryll
Thank you mates 🙂 your comments are much appreciated
Today I had more progress than expected- I managed to finish the inner side of the exhausts - applied a little wash - here we go 🙂
22 February 2018, 19:27
Konrad -
Very nice progress! The exhaust looks really good and of course the metal painting!
22 February 2018, 19:55
Donald Dickson II
Bare metal looks good. Exhaust too!
22 February 2018, 23:27
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Konrad and Donald 🙂 glad that you like it
Today I spend one hours by masking the metal area - so not that much progress - actual it's planned to apply the first coat tomorrow
23 February 2018, 16:55
Clifford Keesler
Looking awesome.
24 February 2018, 02:00
Kees Kleijwegt
Looking great, very nice work on the exhausts! 👍
24 February 2018, 07:21
Stephan Ryll
Thank you mates 🙂 much appreciated
Hope to get some more progress today 🤔
24 February 2018, 09:24
Tim Heimer
Looking good! Looking forward to seeing it done!
24 February 2018, 13:32
Konrad -
Wow looks very nice👍
24 February 2018, 13:53
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Timothy and Konrad, your comments are much appreciated🙂
@ Timothy - still a lot of work to do
1 colour - 2 colour - clear coat - decals - clear coat - landing gear - pylons - AIM-9 - AIM-7 - Center Tank - 1 wash - 2 wash - 3 wash - canopy - base plate ... 😉 hope to get it done in march
24 February 2018, 15:57
Tim Heimer
March! I thought you'd be done by next week! LOL! 🙂
24 February 2018, 17:10
Björn Svedberg
Great work Stephan! And I really like your work in progress photos. 👍
24 February 2018, 17:33
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Björn, glad that you like this build :-k
@ Timothy - I will need some more buckets of paint for this big bird - but I will speed up as much as possible 😉
24 February 2018, 19:01
Clifford Keesler
All I can say is I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!
25 February 2018, 01:57
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford 🙂 I'm also happy with the result
Masking for the 2 colour is done - I used Patafix very much the same as Blu tack
hope to get the colour applied today
25 February 2018, 10:41
Thomas Bischoff
Great work Stephan - the exhausts look fantastic! Interesting use of Patafix to mask of entire areas 🙂
25 February 2018, 14:38
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Thomas for your comment about the exhausts 🙂 I like them to
I found that patafix is very flexible also for masking .
I use a wine cork to put pressure on it like on a cake mixture - the result is a very thin film of patafix which is very flexible - the material can be reused for other masking -
the edge of the painted area is more soft as when using tape

next step done 2 color applied - tomorrow demasking
25 February 2018, 15:52
David Thor
I want to peel that stuff off so badly. 🙂
25 February 2018, 16:48
Donald Dickson II
LMAO David I was thinking the same thing!
25 February 2018, 17:09
Stephan Ryll
Oh yes mates - I also had to do so 😄
Tailfinns and engines are not glued yet - but I wanted to see what it will look like 😄
the tailfinns need also the 2 colour from the inner side
25 February 2018, 18:47
Scott Dutton
Beautiful exhaust painting
25 February 2018, 21:15
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Scott your comment is much appreciated 🙂
today I did some work on the pylons and the center tank and put some gloss coat on the underbelly of the beast 😉
26 February 2018, 16:31
Erik Leijdens
Getting better by the day! 😄
26 February 2018, 18:24
Clifford Keesler
Agree with Erik.
26 February 2018, 20:43
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Erik for your kind comment 🙂
This evening I had a short look at the landing gear parts - there are some ejector marks which I have to remove hope to get the primer on tomorrow 🤔
26 February 2018, 20:45
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Clifford 🙂
today I added the resin and PE parts to the landing gear and gave everything a nice glossy black primer
27 February 2018, 18:54
Stephan Ryll
A little update about the weekend progress on that build
decals on
panel wash done
landing gear wash done
center and wing pylon wash done

next step is to paint and finish the AIM-7 missiles - problem no decals available within the kit - but I think there are some leftover from the F-16 and F-4 build
4 March 2018, 17:48
Erik Leijdens
Nicely done Stephan! The decals makes it even more nicer 👍
4 March 2018, 19:18
David Thor
Coming along very nice! Love the nose art. 🙂
4 March 2018, 20:01
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Erik and David 🙂 much appreciated
The decals are very thin - so you have to be very calm 😄 - but I'm happy with the result
4 March 2018, 20:11
Michael Phillips
She is really starting to come alive now Stephan!
4 March 2018, 22:45
Konrad -
Stephan very nice work! Can't wait to see it finished🙂
5 March 2018, 06:16
Soeren R.
Great result so far Stephan.
The paintjob looks spot on.
5 March 2018, 07:43
Stephan Ryll
Thank you very much for your kind comments, Michael, Konrad and Sören 🙂
Still a lot of work to deal with -
The connection points for the main landing gear are wider than the landing gear connectors - some extra work for a monday😄
5 March 2018, 17:31
Christian Bruer
Very nice work so far 👍
5 March 2018, 17:55
Stephan Ryll
Thank you very much Chrstian, your comment is much appreciated 🙂
finaly I got that lady on her wheels 🙂

also spend on one hour by sanding and cleaning a center seam of the clear parts, masking them and found out that my Maskol is nearly empty - so time to by some new
5 March 2018, 18:42
Tim Heimer
Keep up the good work, she's looking good!
5 March 2018, 19:23
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Timothy 🙂 I'll try to do my very best
5 March 2018, 20:45

Clifford Keesler
What colors did you use on it Stephan?
9 March 2018, 00:38
Stephan Ryll
Clifford I used FS36320 and FS36375 Vallejo Model air 71.120 and 71.046 and lighted both colours to give it a used Look
Hope that helps 🙂

Not that much progress during the weekend 🤔
Finished the AIM-7 Sparrows which I took from my Phantom kit - searched a little bit for fitting decals 😄
Added the antennas on the belly and started the AIM-9 Sidewinders
Next step is to finish the Sidewinders to add the wing pylons finish the belly

Very clean build and a nice attention to details. I like! 👍
14 March 2018, 19:52
Stephan Ryll
Thank you very much Ice 🙂 it's still a lot of work left - at the moment I'm fighting with the Eduard Sidewinders - they have a lot of detail but are also very fragile 🤔
14 March 2018, 20:26
Donald Dickson II
Nice work on the exhausts! And yes, the fins on those winders are thin and break easily. I have glued plenty of them back on.
14 March 2018, 21:42
soheil moghisi
Perfect.
15 March 2018, 06:28
Stephan Ryll
Thank you Donald and Soheil 🙂
@Donald - this time I put some CA on the fin root before I removed the rest - that avoided the breaking of the finns in 80%.
hope to get them finished tomorrow - they still need some clear coat - decals - clear coat - wash and final coating 😄
15 March 2018, 16:16
Donald Dickson II
Good idea. I may try that next time I use them
15 March 2018, 19:53

Inspiring build Stephan. Very good work. I like the caps on the IR heads of the sidewinders
16 March 2018, 19:25
Stephan Ryll
Thank you very much Erik, it's better to keep the cap on the seal head till the bird leaves the position 😉
This display will show the bird on it's parking position - when it's finished 😄
16 March 2018, 19:37
Stephan Ryll
Thank very much James - it's a birg bird, so you can put a lot of detail on 🙂

Shows what can be done with an imperfect kit using unbelievable skills. Congratulations Steve, simply awesome build!
28 March 2018, 22:48
Stephan Ryll
Thank you mates for your overwhelming comments 🙂
That makes me really happy.

It´s not a perfect kit, there are some cliffs to overcome, but it will give you a great base of that great plane. Great also means big, so you need some space on the shelf.

There´s a lot of aftermarket detail within this kit, the decals are very thin but workable.

I hope that you liked my building report that I posted here during the last three month.
Over all I had a lot of fun😉 , see this bird grow on my bench during that time.
