The boss at home wanted to get rid of some nail polish. So I 'borrowed' them and put them through the airbrush. Low pressure, fairly close by for a nice shiny surface.

What did you use for thinner?

That's fantastic Marty! Anything in your wife's other drawers you can make use of? Nail files? Hairbrush?

New picture with the results the day after.

Remember it was a quick and dirty test. Some of The parts had been sanded, but none were cleaned, no primer was used. I thinned with mr color thinner, in the cup of the airbrush, so the ratio is likely to be off. Perhaps nail polish remover or pure acetone will give even better results, and a gloss primer of course.
One pf the first things I "borrowed" was a thin plasticy sowing thread. Used it as tension wires on my earlier biplanes. Looking back It was too sturdy and too thick and too smooth for super glue.

Kerry, this was done with mr color thinner. I'll need to borrow the other stuff 😉
Glenn, tomorrow is mother's day. Instant excuse, even when there aren't any kids!

i guess the finish is quite glossy and hard to the touch, right?

Interesting, I always thought they are classic enamels (the Humbrol kind) and would never think of thinning them with the Gunze stuff. Thx for sharing 🙂

Paint is really hard, supposed to go on nails 😉
I just mixed it with mr color as both smell nasty 😄
Acetone could work better?

Acetone will melt the plastic! Be VERY CAREFUL!!!!

Acetone could be an issue, but I dont think so if cut into the paint. Just try it on some sprue first to see hwta it does.

I have ordered polish from online to get the Mystic Chrome color for a 99 Mustang Cobra kit I have. Turns out it is a common practice amongst car guys to use nail polish as there are SOOOOOO many bright interesting colors. Which is perfect for cars. And perhaps the only way to get a match for some colors. Lots of vids on Youtube,

I bought those prismatic colours from Alclad. Did a testrun on some spoons. First sprayed alclads gloss primer, then (almost immediately) the paint. I think I like what I saw, but does anybody know where the white mist could be coming from (pic 14)??

paint reaction with plastic due to very thin primer? (it is just a wild guess)

Looks to me like it's bloomed. Was it cold/damp when you sprayed?

Vinny might have a point. Wasn't it raining last weekend? I never remember something trivial like the weather 😉

judging by the smell of most nail polishes, I would say Ethyl Acetate is the thinner you want....my girlfriend's nail polishes all reek of the stuff....not sure what it will do to your plastic ...... might be so hot you wont even need primer....give it a try (most nail polish remover are acetone free these days btw)
