Album image #1
Not many bits in the box.

Album image #2
Not sure if I will use the red stripes but decals do look very good.

Album image #3
This is going to be a big sucker!

Album image #4
The plastic isn’t actually transparent but it is translucent so I will prime the interior in black...

Album image #5
And the outside in grey both SMS lacquers.

Album image #6
Fuselage and wings in SMS grey primer. It has been sanded down with 3200 to get rid of the powdered paint.

Album image #7
Engine cans had to be done with Tamiya acrylics and Augie’s Hairy sticks. I don’t have her skills with a brush but the airbrush is just not an option in this heat.

Album image #8
I have no idea what I will do here! Flat black and dirty greys? Panel liner?

Album image #9
I had been up early to airbrush the cockpit interior. Paint still powdered and a mix of SMS white with a few drops of SMS Fluro green didn’t get me anything palatable. Toned it down with Tamiya XF 57 Buff. Still don’t like it.

Album image #10
Roger Ramjet I can live with, metaphorically speaking. Tamiya, buff, gold leaf, linoleum brown and titanium silver.

Album image #11
Not what I had in mind but under the circumstances...

Album image #12
I’ll neaten up the over run chrome and then put some clear yellow over some of the chrome inside the cans. I have some light blue discs I will put inside the back of the cans too. Hopefully it won’t be too dark.

Album image #13
Yep gave up on the cockpit and will start again! Paint remover has started to eat into the surfaces. My fault, left it in too long.

Album image #14
He can’t wait to go fight Cylons!

Album image #15
Gave up with putting blue card behind the cans. Too dark to see so I went with yellow. Thoughts

Album image #16
Needs a clear coat and a wash but happy enough with what has been achieved with one hand tied behind my back.

Album image #17
Cockpit surface is rough as guts but again, under the circumstances...

Album image #18
Stick that comes with the cockpit is way too short and needed extending. I used a mixture of sprue melted with Tamiya Extra Thin. I will sand it round and then cut to length.

Album image #19
Must be fly by wire?

Album image #20
Album image #21
More cockpit views.

Album image #22
Decal on the ejection seat broke up with just water. Very fragile!

Album image #23
The gaps for a spacecraft are horrendous! I have used a liquid plastic mix instead of putty in most cases but here I had to use a piece of styrene to fill a very big gap.

Album image #24
I have some sanding to do tomorrow!

Album image #25
20ml of SMS White with 6 drops of Barley Grey.

Album image #26
I like the colour but the results of my experiment for filling gaps has been an unmitigated disaster. Very disappointing. Still, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Album image #27
Not wasting my time waiting to paint in the extreme heat. Getting the next couple of builds ready to start!

Album image #28
Damn it! Got some overspray!

Album image #29
There is a small gap that needed some doctoring. I just attacked it with a saw. Damn the aenesthetic!

Album image #30
Not at all sure why there would be intake fans for a space engine but, ok, I’ll play. I think a dark and forboding colour

Album image #31
Not unhappy with this really. I’ll think on it. Blue colour is pastel. Never used it before but it livens up on Molotow chrome.

Album image #32
I figure any engine that is open to space is extreme heat generating. No risk of fire of course but heat staining should be expected.

Album image #33
No idea what this is but I decided it would get hot too!

Album image #34
No actual weathering yet, just some builder inflicted damage.

Album image #35
I think I got the balance better on the port side.

Album image #36
No guns yet, canopy not cleared up, and lots of weathering to do to get a balance

Album image #37
This has me flummoxed. Intakes in space? I rubbed the fans down with Ushi metal powder.

Album image #38
Starboard engine seem to be running hot Commander, I’m on my way back to the Galactica!

Album image #39
The business end.

Album image #40
Starbuck will have to wait until January for more attention.

Album image #41
Tamiya grey panel liner wash and a light grey wash using pastel chalk.

Album image #42
Looks like Starbuck had some weather on that planet!

Album image #43
Starbuck to Galactica, get the buffer out of the cupboard!

The ladder doesn't come with it so it'll be done in flight.

Made my mind up Marty, she'll be fairy pristine. I also have a Mk 1 in the stash. I could beat the stuffing out of that and put them side by side.

Yay, Viper! 👍
I think that`s how destiny shows me to paint Cosmo Falcon

A new Mk II to replace the virtually destroyed Mk I. Good story!

Freck! This I have to see!😉 You are off to a great start! 👍

I'm down for a fracking good time. Anyone want to play a game of pyramid?

Peter has a sci-if gig?? I am in, although such lack of focused thematic direction is somewhat worrisome to me. Or inspirational?? I have to think about which... 😄
9 December 2019, 14:59
Rene Scheiblich
Worrisome. 😛

But a frakking Viper? Count me in, I love these things.
Gotta roll the hard six on the weathering though. I've never seen a moderately weathered. Most go for the FUBAR-look or the shiny, brand-new Starbuck one.

Too bad you can't spray right now. But at least you're not in Brisbane! 😮

Awesome start, except for the cockpit of course

Nice start, I will have a look 👍

Whoa... why was I not informed of his earlier? I must bear witness to this...

Nice heads-up on the brittle decals mate, but Mr Ramjet does a good job of hiding it. Solid work so far!
But aren't you going to add a reversing camera? ;p
11 December 2019, 05:22
Peter Hardy
I wouldn't rule it out just yet Rene. I am fully capable of a surprise or two.

You're not the last in Rene, Kez hasn't spotted it yet.

Gap filling without the mess is best done with superglue 'gel'. 👍
Thicker than the usual clear superglue and sandable when dry. 😉
I do like the 'cans', and the pilot looks a treat. 👍
11 December 2019, 12:19
Slavo Hazucha
Looks like a ton of putty with some model on it!😉 And a greasy fingerprint on the upper engine cowling on pic 23... 😄
11 December 2019, 12:19
Slavo Hazucha
Just teasing - great to see this old fellow built! - if Troy Bayliss would go to space, he´d want to go in one of these... Engine section looks most promising already 👍
11 December 2019, 12:20
Rene Scheiblich
Holy cow. I knew the fit isn't stellar with those things, but you have a puttyparty on your hands 😮

Greasy fingerprints happen. Gotta have beer and peanuts when watching Galactica 😛
11 December 2019, 12:23
Spanjaard
i have one in my stash, so really interested in what you do with yours 🙂
11 December 2019, 13:41

That's some nice work on the exhausts and cockpit Peter. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest.

Niiiiice!

When I was a kid, a friend's older brother built this one with the engine nozzle assembly just pushed in place, not glued on. He showed me how he stored his weed inside of it in a little baggie.
15 December 2019, 02:06
Peter Hardy
Thanks Ben, that's, ummmm, very helpful?
15 December 2019, 04:37
Slavo Hazucha
Well, our hobby is so much more than you see on the surface... 👍

Taking shape nicely, looking forward to the paint job once dust turns into aerosol liquid again at your side of the globe!😉
15 December 2019, 11:26
Paul Juliano
Haha Ben that friend is a genius. I recently got some of those little scale leaf punches, and I was thinking how it'd be funny for the company to make one for hemp leaves. That'd be some diorama.
15 December 2019, 15:23
Ben M
Peter, no point to my story, just flashed into my mind when I saw your Viper. I guess that would have been the old MPC? Viper from the 70's, not this awesome one. I built one myself without the weed storage capability.
15 December 2019, 19:49
Rene Scheiblich
Hard to see, but the white seems to have went down nicely😎
Moved the airbrush chamber into the fridge? 😛
15 December 2019, 20:01
Peter Hardy
Rene, Slavo, I can get up very early and get some quick airbrushing in but again, it's gotta be quick! I'll get the red stripes on the upper bodywork done today.

Ben, Viper is from the 70s. Moulding is very basic. Not many panel lines to work with. Not really sure how I can upgrade the level of external detail but I have plenty of time in the hobby room aircon. I have no excuses for a visually boring build!
15 December 2019, 21:40
Kerry COX
Both Peter and myself are having to deal with this extremely hot weather, all in 40c plus on a daily basis.
Dust everywhere. 🙁 🙁 🙁
15 December 2019, 21:52
Spanjaard
prepare some models, do sanding, and leave them all ready to be painted in winter😉
15 December 2019, 22:07

and send some sun over here 😄 😄
10 degrees would do fine 🙂

Gladly! 42*C here again today. 49*C in Birdsville, 51*C in Oodnadatta.
15 December 2019, 22:22
Chris Greathouse
24c is comfortable, I start melting at the 28c mark too... I'm glad I don't live in your upside-down Aussie world Peter 😛 42c is 107f!!! I would be a worthless sack of a human seeking air conditioning and beer as I melt. Next are you going to say "but it's a dry heat"? 😛 My grandparents would say that all the time living in Arizona. lol
15 December 2019, 23:36
Spanjaard
i rather take 45 and dry than 35 and wet... any time. and i know both pretty well 😛

WoW, she looks fantastic mate.👍👍👍
16 December 2019, 10:23

Those exhausts are amazing!
16 December 2019, 10:55
Michael Hickey
Well you're certainly on your way.👍
16 December 2019, 10:59
Jozef Goos
Nice!
16 December 2019, 13:55
Rene Scheiblich
This can't be the old Viper from the 70s. It's the MK2 from the more recent remake with the female Starbuck 😛 less cheesy as well.
Makes the bad fit even worse 🙂

40°... Anything above 25 is uncomfortable and 30 starts to torture my sweat glands. 😄
But good thing you've got the morning hours. The red stripes came out quite nice, albeit a bit too bright shade of red.
16 December 2019, 13:58
Maciej Bellos
Great going. As for the temps, I am with Spaanjard here. Singapore with 30 and 100% humidity was far worse than 45 in Patras, Greece.
16 December 2019, 15:35
Slavo Hazucha
A humble comment from a man also working on some nozzles at the same time: these look great!😉 👍
16 December 2019, 20:54

Yes, there is more to learn when you expand your imagination to more than motorcycles! LOL
16 December 2019, 22:11

Rene, give me time to dull it all down Mate!

Lode, haven't seen the second series. Still secretly in lust with the "dirty socialator" Cassiopeia.

Jimbo, thank you! I am a Sci Fi fan and have been itching to get at this one.

Slavo, Tim has been badgering me for six months to try pastels. She'll be covered in chalk by the time I am finished.

Tim, shut up.

17 December 2019, 15:30

Nice! As for the intakes. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Vipers can go into a planets atmosphere. Perhaps at that time the engines switch to a combustion type system and then need the intakes?
17 December 2019, 16:43
Rene Scheiblich
Yep they are capable of atmospheric flight 🙂

Just picking, Peter 😛
She's looking fine 🙂
17 December 2019, 17:20

Cassiopeia.... i was too young at that time 😛 but i remember the book certainly....

For a bloke who lives in such a rural and removed place, he has got amazing talent and determination to be a great modeller. 👍 😉
3 January 2020, 22:43
Peter Hardy
Thank you All. I am a bit of a sci fi nut so it was an enjoyable build. Next shots loaded will be of the completed build.
4 January 2020, 00:07
Rene Scheiblich
It's also enjoyable to look at! Hefty but sensible chipping, if I remember the series right, the birds looked quite beaten up a few episodes in.
The colourful area around the visible engine parts and exhausts looks cool B)
Seems you could apply some knowledge from your bike builds here.
4 January 2020, 15:20

Fantastic weathering.looks gorgeous
4 January 2020, 18:51

Ok, calling this completed!
6 January 2020, 07:59

And I'd say you'd be correct, lovely job Peter.👍👍👍

Thanks Mick. Dogs do good this year you think?
6 January 2020, 10:34

Has to be better than last year but, the important question is "can the refs be better this year?"

Looks good mate! That burnt area looks great! What did you do, take it outside a bit?
6 January 2020, 14:17

Nice job Peter. Makes me wanna do a sci-fi build 🙂. Hope you are not impacted by the fires too much.

Great finish Peter! What's next, Apollo's Mk VII? ;P
6 January 2020, 16:56

Rene, the Galactica herself if undergoing a refit! It is posted so have a look!
6 January 2020, 21:22

Alec, I'm 2000 kays away from the incinerator. We just get whacked with a cyclone or two every year!

Thanks Jimbo! I will be slowing down from this point as I have to go back to work after 10 weeks recovering.

Thanks Chris, cannot waitto see your first Sci Fi build!

Tim, shut up!
6 January 2020, 21:25
Spanjaard
nice job Peter. one question comes to mind now that i see the fotos in the computer... all the red is nicely chipped showing grey or metallic color underneatch... but i see not chipping in the white
8 January 2020, 10:11
Nathan Dempsey
The red paint manufacturer was the lowest bidder. 🙂
8 January 2020, 14:02
Peter Hardy
Spanjaard, I have given this point a great deal of thought. I have decided the following; the bodywork of the Viper is made from sheet Chipless Imperviousium and does not chip. The red strips are made from non chipless plastisised sheeting, which does. Hope this explains why the 'white' never chips on Vipers. I thought everyone knew that! These facts can now go down in modelling folklore!

Thanks Dave, you have made me smile enough so it is only fair!

Kim, thank you!

J D, got it half built but ran out of skills. When I get nearly as good as you I will try to finish it.

Wow, try and give a compliment, get hit with a compliment...times shure have changed! You rock Pete!
