P51-Mustang (Foxy Lady #34 White - @RenoAirRace '75)
At the 1975 AirRace in Reno the Foxy Lady #34 appeared in an all-white and without the rear PinUp artwork The whole Airframe was painted gloss white with a red outlining around the ends of the wings, elevators and tailplane The P-51H type propellor was all black and the undercarriage and wheel hubs were gold..
Racing modifications were generally as for the black 1974 Foxy Lady. Namley: Streamlined canopy and spine, clipped wings and tailplane. This aircraft sported extended wing root fillets and the spinner reverted back to the standard nose cone Type of P-51D.
BAaeline for the model is the Airfix North American P-51D Mustang kit A01004
Decals are from DrawDecal and the resin parts for the race modification are from HighPlanes.
For racers the heavy radio set was removed from the compartment behind the pilot.
Radio set removed,...
...and covered.
On the instrument panel the gun sight was rmoved and due to the "turtle deck" canopy the original seat configuration was too high and need to be replaced by a shorter one.
Here we have the original Airfix fuselage were I need to do some adjustments,.....
I had to remove parts of the fuselage sides in order to fit the resin upper deck.
Cutting done - turteldeck waiting to be fitted in to the new contour.
Dimensions of the resin part is quite ok whilst surfaces quality is not the best as you can see.
Tryfit of the vacuum formed canopy & resin upper deck & spine.
Looking at the radiator.
Cockpit painted and...
...glued into position.
Wing tips were trimmed on those racer Mustangs, Here I take off the tips of the tailplane.
The "white" Foxy Lady had extended wing root filliets. On one side I already started my scratch work.
Checking out pictures and marking roughly the position in order to get an idea on how to reconstruct the fillets.
Engraving a deep "panel line" to support the stryre piece that is foreseen.
Glued in place and filled with putty.
Sanded in shape,....
...and ready for the other side.
The craft had clipped wings. Further, many panel lines of the plane were filled to reduce aerodynamic drag. I will have to remove the guns and fill the cartrige ejection ports too.
Cutting the wing at the second panel line...
...and replace it with the resin parts.
Ready to move on with filling gaps, panel lines and various ports.
I used brass tube for pitot.
I was getting more & more a fan of Ultimat Primer. This self-levelling primer is a good option prior finishing coat.....
...minor irregularities are covered and smoothened, those with more impact like scratsches, etc...you can easy identify and rework. Panel filling and scratch removal worked out pretty ok this time - the surface is relatively free of irregularities and ready for the white topcoat.
Overall gloss white and some aluminium/silver in the wheel bay
An extra layer of transparent gloss....
.....and starting to do the decals,
Done. A snap shot during last weeks model show in Ried/AUT. I try to add some more soon.
Cheers

Started another double build - Ken Burnstine's Foxy Ladies in the '74 and '75 paint scheme.
This one is Miss Foxy Lady in the 1975 appearance.

Added some new pic today.
@Matthew: the conversion parts are ok. Dimensions a accurate. Surface quality is not the best with respect to roughness and burrs. Sanding is needed. The parts are of polyurethan resin and they are good to cut and sand. They are not so rigid as I have already experienced on other resin parts I was working with.

New pictures - I have scrached the extended wing root fillets, removed the guns, clipped the wings and gab-filled most of the panel lines and ports that were covered for aerodynamic reasons.

Nice and clean!👍 Well done! The tiny canopy makes the plane appear comically bigger than it is 😄

Hi all - thx for your likes and nice comments.
I build the two Mustangs because I found a picture on the web and found the plane looking great. I was concentrating on picture reseach all the weeks before and was not paying attention to the owner & pilot. I did this when the model was almost finished and 2 day's before the show and...OMG - what a story behind this person. Anyone awear of Kenneth Burnstine?

Ok - here is the story I found: Ken in a nutshell.
Graduated at Northwestern University. Joint US Marines 1954. Served in Korea until 1955. Then sent to Marine Aircraft Group 11 in Atsugi, Japan. There he was given counterintelligence credentials.
Started pilot training at Navy flight school Pensacola, Florida. Ultimately discharged from Navy reserves and finished at a private flight school in Alabama.
He set up his own Airline in Fort Lauderdale, His Florida Air International, was involved in drugs and arms smuggling. He gained quite some money and beside other investments he financed the construction of the "landmark" KenAnn Building in Wilton Manors in the 60's. Early 1974 a lion escaped his property in Fort Lauderdale and attacked a child.
Later that year Burnstine won the Reno Air Race in an modified P-51 Mustang (the black Miss Foxy Lady).
A few month later he was arrested and charged for drug smuggling. At the time of his death in 1976 he was cooperating with federal prosecutors. He mysteriously crashed the Mustang with which he had won the 1974 Reno Air Race in the Mojave Desert. Was it his own fault? Did someone manipulate the craft? Even more mysterious the fact that there where barely mortal remains found beside a hand (with a thumbprint)....no bones, no skull, etc.....he disappeared. Rumors have it that this was stage-managed to eighter flee the police and/or the drug mafia.....and...people reported of a rarley and odd encounter: down in the everglades a one-armed pilot was running a small private business in the late 70's.

Juergen, obviously a great build and WOW! What a story indeed! I too looked it all up and read in disbelief also. It's almost too ridiculous to be believed! 😆
