Fairey Fulmar Special Hobby 2009 tool
One of two Special Hobby (my first ones) aircraft I'll be starting soon.
Made a start with the cockpit as per the instructions.
Internal fuselage painted Vallejo internal grey green. Other bits added.
Internals done, ready to glue together.......
Both halves of fuselage together. This was more difficult than expected due to the fit.
Wings and tail plane on. Fit on both was pretty awful.
Primer now on and a bit of shading pre-painting.
Extra dark sea grey added as base coat (Vallejo Model Air US Dark Grey)
Dark Slate grey added as part of the camouflage.
Underneath painted Sky Type S.
Wings and underside of nose had desert camo addition.
Decals on, panel wash added then sprayed with matt varnish.
Completed

This will be the first of 2 Special Hobby aircraft that I'll be building soon. My first real foray into the land of short run builds.... 🙂

Fuselage internals have been painted and some bits added. It will be interesting to see how it goes together with a lack of locating pins! 🙂
Welcome as always Bernd. 👍

I've now put together the internals of the fuselage ready for fitting both parts together. Here's hoping the fit is OK! 🙂

Wings and tail now on. Fit for wings to fuselage was awful. The fuselage seemed too big and the wheel wells also had to be trimmed. Lots of filler. The tail planes are in two pieces which are too thick to fit into the tail. Lots of sanding done here and then of course filler due to the fit. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by James and Andy. 👍

Primer is on and a bit of pre-shading before painting. 🙂
Thanks Mikel for your encouragement, I admit it has been a bit difficult so far, here's hoping the rest goes ok. 👍

Extra Dark Sea Grey (Vallejo Model Air US Dark Grey) added to the top of the fuselage as a base colour for the Dark Slate Grey camouflage to be added next. 🙂

Underside painted with Vallejo Model Air Sky Type S. I've noticed a couple of errors that will have to be touched up. Next will be adding the wing tips desert camouflage. 🙂

The desert camouflage additions for this scheme were added. I used Vallejo Model Air UK Light Stone, UK Dart Earth & Dark Green. Gloss varnish was then added ready for decals. 🙂
Many thanks Dean for your kind comment. 👍

Finally, the last bits were the rigging and that, as they say is that, my first Special Hobby aircraft complete. 🙂
Nine Fairey Fulmars of 805 Sqn Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm joined HMS Eagle (aircraft carrier) to provide fighter cover for the Mediterranean Fleet in mid- February 1941. HMS Eagle was the sole aircraft carrier from 11 January until 9 March 1941 due to HMS Illustrious being crippled by German dive bombers. During their operational service in the Mediterranean some of the Fulmars, including the one denoted by this model had "spaghetti" camouflage painted on the wing leading edges and nose lower section. The top of the pilot canopy was thought to have been painted white. (to reflect the heat of the sun?)
805 Squadron was first formed as a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm squadron in November 1940 at the RAF aerodrome at Abukir in Egypt. Operating Fairey Fulmars in a convoy protection role, the squadron operated in the Western Desert until January 1941, when it transferred to Crete. A short time later, it returned to Egypt, where at Dekeilia it re-equipped with Brewster Buffalo fighters. In June 1941, these were replaced by the Grumman Martlet III. The squadron disbanded in January 1943.
