I am awaiting the release of the MH-53M. I know a company that is supposed to do one. Perhaps all the MH-53 types.

Ronan, I cant see any major differences. I could be missing something, but to my knowledge the differences from the J to M were electronic. My dad had retired by the time they did the Pavelo versions. I'd bet he would have known though.

Ronan, do you have any details about the picture of the original HH-53C, showing right on top of this thread? I have the feeling that the helo has yellow tail-numbers. I´m planning to do a "in country" HH-53C after I have finished my MH-53J, and I´m looking for any details I can get.

Well, on a second look I recognize a german C-160 Transall behind the Jolly, so it´s definetly not while in South East Asia....😉

I haven´t started mine either, I´m waiting for an announced set of Decals for the H-53 by Caracal decals. Hopefully they do have some options for a HH-53 during Vietnam.

Could it be a mirror? When did the Mine-searching MH-53s of the Navy show up? I think they used mirros to watch the sled they pulled over the water.

I don't think this is a mirror, it's too close from the airframe.
On the MH-53E, the mirrors are further forward and lower.

Yeah, on second thought, they probably won´t be visible from the cockpit at that close range. Just from the basic looks it´s maybe something like a RWR or another electronical device.
I can ask over at ARC.

Well, to start, thats a USAF helo, so I doubt it had anything mine detecting on it.
Next thats from 72. As far as I know, they hadnt started up the MH's until 75. I could be wrong, but if not, thats not any of the Pave Low equipment.
So, I can not for the life of me figure out what it is. And as my father isnt with us, I cant ask him.

From ARC forum : The Night Recovery System HH-53's did not have the TF radar. That came later with the Pave Low. What they had was a low light level TV system, not a FLIR. This along with the Doppler radar and Hover Coupler allowed an approach to a hover. When in use, it only moved up and down.

"This attachment on the nose of this particular HH-53B/C is apart of the LNRS. In 1968, eight HH-53 B/Cs received the first of several modifications, called Limited Night Recovery System (LNRS), which incorporated a low light TV and a hover coupler."
