Its said that 'First day of WW3, the harrier wouldn't be the best preforming aircraft flying that day, but it would be the only aircraft flying on the second'

The harriers VTOL capabilities, operational flexibility and durability made it an excellent aircraft for rough or un-prepared airstrips or even just clearings.
In the event of conflict, the Harrier could operate from camouflaged field bases to launch attacks on advancing armoured columns from East Germany.
for this diorama im hoping to reflect that capability with a slightly 'hotter' spin on it for interest.

The setting im going for is a circa 1980's cold war gone hot/ WW3 scenario, where 14 days following a nuclear exchange, all sides have suffered catastrophic losses, there is virtually no infrastructure left to operate from, especially airfields which would've been among the most valuable targets, and promptly eliminated.

Despite this a squadron of harriers, and their security and support detail have managed to escape and survived the opening days of the war, regrouped and established a field of operations. For two weeks now The base has been operating from a forest somewhere in western Europe. Their determined and diligent operators and machines, weathered by relentless operation, redeployment and the harsh; now radioactive environment, provide the only remaining air strike capability in the European theatre.
Their resilience, discretion, and ability to literally operate from almost anywhere makes them virtually impossible to target on the ground, thus providing the survivors a decisive tactical advantage to protect whats left
