Initial test fitting started. Will require more sanding and putty that expected for such a new kit.

Well, the polycap that is supposed to link/sync the left and right elevators fell out during the process of joining the fuselage halves. So I had to saw out the little housing that was supposed to hold the polycap in place and set it manually. Looks like I have one "unforced error" so far...

That Merlin is looking great. Looks like it came with the kit? Must be a lot easier than old resin, lol

It's close to time to add the canopy and mask for paint. Lots of weathering yet to go. And the gun bays are looking a bit bland. Needs some additional paint and wiring.

Yep agreed Ky, my next P-51 will definitely be a Tamiya. How did detailing the gun bays go Marlin?

Still working on them. The fit has had only one issue that was even close to being worth mentioning. The right wing gun port on the leading edge did not fit perfectly. So I have had to do a little filling on the undersurface. The underwing scoop was almost an issue but seems to have settled into place. WARNING: one must fit the AILERONS BEFORE THE FLAPS. Otherwise the photo etched hinge does not get locked into place by the steel shaft from the outboard end of the flap. Missed this so it was unforced error #2...

Okay, after looking at some of the real aircraft, I am not sure there is any detail needed except to weather the bay and guns. I was expecting some electrical or other pipes/wiring, but alas, there does not appear to be any...

I'm back! So the masks provided are intended to be applied to the outside surface. However, it's really hard to mask the interior surface, so I cut the masks and applied them to the inside of the glass and then used Scotch tape for the outside. Leaving the interior a little "over masked, the black primer added to the outside with the flat black interior will create a nice effect overall.

I'm using Alclad and Metalizer. Sadly, my collection of Metalizer is shrinking. My choice for masking tape is 3M PostIt Notes. They work really well on the soft surface of Alclad Primers and Paints. Looking to seal it up next and start the process of marking/weathering.

I love the finish of Metalizer but hoo boy is it fragile. I hear you on supply. I'm all out of aluminum; stainless steel and jet exhaust are all that's left. 🙁
Your IDF Mustang is looking great, however!

Going to steal your post it notes trick for my next metallic project. Even i]with Xtreme Netal paints, I still have to wait a couple of days after I seal it with gloss - thanks Marlin!

Thanks for the likes, all!
@Treehugger - yes, the movie is based on a rescue in 1952 by CG36500 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Pendleton#Loss). The kit is not of that actual boat, but the same type (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifeboat_(rescue)#36'_(foot)).
@Thomas - oh yes, it worked very well debonding the CA, I used 3/4 of a bottle to get rid if it all.

There's something extra nice about old kit rescue, looks good I shall follow along. Liking that wave base a lot 👍

Thanks, Łukasz and Andy.
The waves are made from 2-3 layers of tissue paper and watered down PVA.
The base itself is XPS with balsa framing.

Uploaded some images of the finished project. Quite happy with. The pictures are not that great though, I'm no photographer, but they give an impression of what the end result is.

I've uploaded more photos that document the build progress, which has been very slow. Sorry about that, but life keeps getting in the way. I've had a variety of health issues and I'm heading to the oncologist next week to set up a time for a biopsy on some nodes in my neck. Hopefully it's just related to a sinus infection I've been fighting and not the lymphoma coming back. Keeping my fingers crossed. Cheers, Bill

I used up a few bottles of semi-gloss white, but the Victor is now a "white whale." Thanks for the kind words on my health - I go in on Feb. 29 for a sinus surgery and tissue collection for biopsy. Fingers crossed. I tried to cross my toes but was unsuccessful... Cheers, Bill

Oh, by the way - after two weeks (!) of testing my oncologist decided the biopsies were negative. Dodged another bullet.

Thanks mates. I've added a couple more photos that show the painting of the landing gear and air brake internals. I've also painted the wheels, gear doors and air brake petals (photos soon). Up next is to paint the dielectric panels on the underside as well as the H2S radome. Cheers, Bill

Two more photos added showing some detail painting. I'm off to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware tomorrow for a week of spending what's left of my retirement portfolio. Unfortunately there are no hobby shops anywhere near where we'll be. But the Air Mobility Command museum at Dover AFB should make up for that.
