It's official: I'm a fraud. I'm going to (shamelessly) copy the ideas of a more creative modeller.

Thanks Stanley, I'll keep that in mind.
For the first time ever I painted camo with an airbrush. Decided to do it the hard way; freehand. I'm quite satisfied with the result.

Yes, looks good Martin, maybe a bit too soft demarcations but it looks ok to me 👍

Nice freehand Martin. You are brave to do that! What airbrush did you use?

Thanks Erik, Alec & Łukasz.
The demarcations are soft. I didn't/wouldn't take the time to mask. The plane itself is quite small and I wanted to give freehand a go. In reality there is some tiny splattering of the darker colour on the light colour.
I'm using a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution with the whole shabang. It comes with a 0.2 & 0.4 needleset. I also bought the pressure control valve and the needle limiter. I can recommend both.
The camo was done with the 0.2 needleset.
Thanks Erik, Alec & Łukasz.

I found cleaning of my airbrush very tedious. It actually made me long for a hairy stick. Eventually I found some good tips on this site:

Thanks Christian. It's little indeed. I tried rigging it, succeeded in the end. Was finnicky job. Now I'll let the glue set for at least a night, cutting of the extra wire will be done later. All that's left is the under carriage, decalling, panel line wash and perhaps some weathering. I'll have a peak at Flop's progress for ideas. 🙂

Nice. I have just ordered the Harder & Steenbeck Infinity, so can't wait to try it (have Iwata Eclipse and CM-C Plus now). Yes, airbrush cleaning is a pain, but it does eventually become routine and not so bad 🙂

Gutentag Herr Flop. I just took a look at your build. Our progress is quite similar. Yours is more sophisticated though. I like the extra effort you took with the exhausts and the brake lines.

nice build - looking at the free hand camo I would say that the paint (dark green) would have required more thinning?

Thanks Thomas. The light paint was too thick and gave me some problems. Had to clean the brush to het it going again. The dark paint splattered a bit. I'm too novice to determine whether it's pressure, distance or thinning. Have you got some clues for me?

the splatters would indicate that the paint was not enough diluted.
Pressure is a very personal thing - each paint can be different, depends also on the thinning. Just try different settings on a testbed before applying to the "real" thing

My wife kills my models while cleaning my room faster than I can build them. So I bought some Trumpeter display cases. The ugly black plastic base made my eyes hurt. So I decided to do a diorama. Started out simple with a concrete pad with some grass alongside. A small shallow puddle should bring some variation to the scene.
As usual, feel free to enlighten me were I went wrong, overdid some stuff or stopped too early 😉

nice start on the base - every model looks nicer with a decent display!

Added the water, at least tried it. Hopefully tomorrow I can clean the base up a bit along the edges. I'm very curious about the result. 🙂

Not exactly what I was looking for. This isn't a puddle, this is light mud. Aaah decisions. Wlli I attempt a salvage operation or just declare this ok?
Flop, Thomas & James, thank you for your encouragement.

I don't want to bring you down but it does not look very convincing - I vote for a salvage operation!

Hi Martin,
I don't know the Vallejo Water Medium, but I guess it is not clear because you add a drop of colour to the medium?!
From my point of view you should paint just the background and not the water medium. This only should give clarity and a depth effect to the painted surface. The more layers of medium you apply the more depth effect you will get.
May you should try to paint the surface again with the preferred colours, let it dry and then add one or two final layers of water medium using a flat brush in a stippling motion. Make sure the first layer is dry before you add a second layer. The thicker each layer the more drying time.
By the way, I always use Schmicke acrylic high gloss gel no. 53005, to add effects to my ship model displays. I never dilute it with water, it is possible but not necessary!

Hope that helps and keep on the good work 👍

Hi Christian,
Thabks for the advice. I did paint the underground. I added 1 drop of paint to my water, just go get it murky. The stippling is what I dont like. A puddle should have a smooth surface. Mine looks like light mud. I'll try once more to get it smoothened, otherwise I'll paint it a darker shade of brown and declare it mud 🙂
There are plenty of tutorials on the web to create waves, wakes and the like. It seems I'm just using the wrong product for my puddle. Resin looks like the way to go, or vallejo still water. But I dont have those 😎

Apply the Vallejo water. Then smoothen wit a moist/wet flat brush. The result would be passable if not for the older tinted 'water'.
So now its too smooth for mud and too rough underneath for a nice puddle.
I'll park the Chaika over it (sort of) and declare it finished and unsalvageble.
