![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/5/0/9/720509-27411-25-720.jpg)
Side gun bulge sanded down and trench filled. Also filled the trenched under the canopy as they aren't in the book
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/5/1/0/720510-27411-93-720.jpg)
Raised panel lines removed and rescribed

![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/5/1/5/720515-27411-70-720.jpg)
Engine and propeller built and painted
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/0/2/6/723026-27411-12-720.jpg)
Engine weathers and glued into the replacement cowl. Propeller added to finish the sub-assembly
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/7/8/7/720787-27411-71-720.jpg)
Photo-etch cockpit parts added - very fiddly work!
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/0/2/7/723027-27411-80-720.jpg)
Cockpit painted and (maybe over-) weathered
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/4/7/971447-27411-51-720.jpg)
Fuselage glued together and wings added. This shot shows the radiator section hollowed out and some mesh added so you can't see through it.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/4/8/971448-27411-77-720.jpg)
Float glued on - a lot of filling and sanding required. Floats already painted as the tops will be hard to get to.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/4/6/1/971461-27411-96-720.jpg)
Top view - still some work needed in the cockpit (rear seat and the framing between the two seats)
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/4/6/0/971460-27411-68-720.jpg)
Side view showing the extension needed on the front of the fuselage as the after-market engine cowl wouldn't fit without it.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/8/3/6/1072836-27411-35-720.jpg)
The aircraft in the book has a different canopy setup to the kit. I removed the centre upright and made a mould and a copy out of clear resin
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/8/3/7/1072837-27411-94-720.jpg)
Finished the interior and glued on the canopy pieces
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/1/3/9/1074139-27411-53-720.jpg)
Etched aerials added, canopy masked and framework painted
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/8/3/7/1075837-27411-53-720.jpg)
Main paint done - decals next
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/1/4/3/1076143-27411-48-720.jpg)
And about time to attach the nose and engine...
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/3/4/7/1081347-27411-83-720.jpg)
Decals added. Lots of small white markings that don't show up well in the photo, as well as the insignia from Blue Rider - I went for the EFRS markings from the English language version of the book

Why wasn't I informed of this project being under way?! Luckily, I scan Uwe's wall every so often to snoop on what he's up to. I've been thinking about this one as well. Great to have a step-by-step guide along the way.

Thanks guys - started this one this time last year, so it's been moving slowly! Of course just after I started it special hobby released a new kit, so I probably could have saved the rescribing - but it was a good learning experience. Still some way to go on this though, including some changes to the canopy glazing.

Following. Special Hobby has a new Ar 196??? Or were you thinking about the Sword kit?

Thanks Alec - you're right, I must have been thinking of the Sword kit (I knew it was eastern European and started with S!)

NP. Got me excited there for a minute. The Sword kit is apparently a bear to build, so the old Heller kit is still pretty good, raised panels and all.

Well there you go - newer isn't always better! Might be a good thing I stuck with the Revell kit, particularly as I'm building a comic book representation anyway...

That was my reasoning… it even kept me from rescribing the panel lines. 😉
I can't wait to see what Uwe's going to come up with here.

Nearing the end, Greg - a bit more masking and then the final paint

Nice build, I hold it for the same build in 1:32, follow with great interest 👍

Thanks Torsten. Finally got around to finishing this one (the rigging on the floats held me up) and taking the final photos.

Thanks Lukasz - always good when the cowling and prop boss only need to be grey! The propeller blades have been painted though 😉. Unfortunately I had to paint them because the kit plastic was a different shade of grey to the resin cowling!

Album info
This is the EFSR (European Foundation for Scientific Research) Ar-190 floatplane from the Tintin book The Shooting Star. Its based on the Revell 172 kit with an Eduard photo-etch set and a Quickboost cowling. As it is meant to be a civillian aircraft I've also tried to demilitarise it by getting rid of hard points and guns.
