Panavia Tornado double build
Serious engineering flaws in the kit: The horizontal stabilisers broke off on both planes due to weak joints. The inner pylons also broke off as soon as the wings were glued together due to a faulty c-clamp holding them on.
Area around the APU intake sealed and sanded. Bolts drilled for the engine nozzle. Horizontal tail pivot fairing rebuilt.
Left is the kits single set of engine gears which is wrong. On the right are the double gears that I have scratch built to correct the problem. I later replace the gears on the left as well.
Engine Intakes filled and correted
Tiny control panels.

Taped up for detail painting
Engines, nose and bottom painted
Repainted the glare shield and repaired the heads up display. Also repainted the canopy seal area.
Added scratch built oxygen tubes to the seats.
Ready to be gloss varnished for decals.
Gloss applied to prepare for the decals
After putting on the first decal I realized that the transparent film would not work and I had to cut it away after the decal was on the model. The remaining decals will all have to be cut separately before being applied and I will have to rely on reference photos because the drawing in the instructions does not match the decals or the original aircraft.
Cutting away the excess transparent film. Each stripe has to be done individualy to get the best result. It may be better to make a mask and spray them on as the decals are a bit light in value.
Decals on the port Stabilator complete.
Both Stabilator now have stripes. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the starboard side as the instructions are wrong and the photos I have been able to find do not show the back end very well.
Decal provided compared to the illustration in the instructions. One of these things is not like the other. And I fear both are not like the original.
I decided to put all the decals on the model, then adjust and fine tune the ones that are correct. Several of the stipes provided are not like the original. I will attempt to remove those and paint the stripes on with Tamiya XF-63 to get a better match to the original livery.
I just noticed that the values of the German flag are wrong in the decals. The middle and the lower value need to be flipped.
Removing inaccurate decals.
It's a slow process but it works well. I am removing inaccurate decals and hand painting the stripes on with a brush using XF-63
Hand painting stripes. About 40% of the decals are inaccurate and all of them need some adjustments.
Revell printed the values of the number one that goes on the side of the plane wrong.
Here I have corrected the values of the number one by using some white decal sheet for underneath the grey decal and I cut out a number one and sandwiched it on top. Note: the decal of the number one is still oversized but I don't have my computer set up right now to print my own decals so this will have to do.
I switched to the IDS because the stripes on the ECR were annoying me. Here I have laid down the first few coats of blue paint on the IDS which I mixed using 50% Tamiya XF-8 and 50% Mr Hobby H5.

Matthew the blue model is the spirit IDS. The plastic is a bit softer than the ECR.

Well done so far.
Andy, I consider Revell's latest mold as the best Tornado IDS for 1/72. And the Hasegawa mold for the ADV version. For the IDS version, I miss some decals for the RSAF's camouflage scheme 🙁

I'm still not happy with the color of the glare shield. I think I may lighten it a bit. I think it is too dark now.

Uh, sounds like a lot of extra work with the decals. But so far this looks awesome 👍

Thanks guys. Cutting out each stripe individually is a lot of work and time but the end result is much better.
I also discovered that some of the stripes were oversized compared to the original aircraft's livery. I am able to make the necessary adjustments this way.

Ok, I am completely frustrated with the terrible instructions for the decals for the Tornado ECR. They get a zero in accuracy. I have been forced to waste time searching the internet for photos that don't exist. Shame on you Revell!

Interesting. The decals on the 1/32 I did were fantastic. The instructions were correct, just not laid out the best. These are not Cartograf I take it

The drawing for the decals doesn't match the decals provided. The drawing is completely wrong. But after beginning to apply the decals I realized that not all of the stripes match the plane. Had I known this from the beginning I would have made a stencil and painted them. But alas there aren't enough reference photos on the web. But I was pretty irritated when I discovered the photos of the original plane on the side of the box showing some of the stripes having completely different shapes and placement than the decals provided.

I think the Revell decals are more accurate for the Tornado "Tiger Meet 2014" on 46+28. But there are a lot less stripes on that plane.

Wow, that sucks. Interesting how it can vary so widely from one scale to the next from the same company.
But yes, there are a good number more stripes on yours than were on the one I did.

Your model of 46+28 came out well. Congratulations on getting 3rd place.

Ok, after spending days trying to make the decals provided for this kit look even remotely like the original I have decided that the guy who designed these decals was completely high when he did it. Some areas are close, but other areas are totally made up. I'm sure the photos he had were missing areas of the plane. And whoever drew the instructions was probably on acid because they are simply wrong.

I got the stripe decals on the model but several of them are not like the original livery. Now starts the fine tuning of the ones that are close, the removal of the ones that are off and then I will begin painting new stripes on to correctly match the original livery of the plane.

I see the grey tiger stripes by Revell didn't improve almost a decade after my CF-18 was issued (1993 vs 2000). I had to correct mine too. Keep it up 👍

I hope the same does not happen with the decals on a pair of Revell MLUs that I have.
You are doing a good job 👍.
