Audi Sport Quattro A2

Album image #1
First we start with some plastic surgery: replaced the Roof of the transkit Body with the roof of the Kitpart. Transkitpart is way too thick. That way the clearparts will Not fit...

Album image #2
After glue and putty from transplanting the roof was cured, Little bit of sanding was required...

Album image #3
Turned out ok. The casting from renaissance is of very good quality! Almost no airbubbles or flaws.

Album image #4
The rollbar included in the Kit is far from being complete. So one has to build the missing section By using reference pictures from the Web from scratch. This is MK3, 1 and 2 did Not work out because my thinking was too complicated...

Album image #5
A little mock-up to Check the stance of the chassis suspension: i think i will have to rise the height of the ride a little Bit for using graveltire setup.

Album image #6
Raised Suspension for only 1mm. Gives the wheels a Bit More space in the wheelarches...

Album image #7
Modified Kit suspension.

Album image #8
Modified exhaust.

Album image #9
Priming in the Name of...

Album image #10
Paintjob in pure brilliant white (almost no difference to the Primercoat)

Album image #11
Done a thing or two with the interior: first bended and testfittet some etched parts from the reji-model set...

Album image #12
Then build a new gear shifter from scratch by reference of some pictures from the real thing. Not 100% but far better then the kit parts. Also changed position of the fire-extinguisher...

Album image #13
Made some helmets by modifying the heads from driver and copilot figures of the kit as an addition for the interior.

Album image #14
Rollcage MK4; final version. Ended up in scavenging the italeri Kit of the Audi Quattro for this project...

Album image #15
Fits pretty good. Minor adjustments to the dashboard had to be done. Fits good as well...

Album image #16
With some little adjustments the sidewalls of the italeri kit mated with the Tamiya cockpit tub perfectly...

Album image #17
Main components of the cockpit are done. Little filling and sanding of ejectionmarks have to be done then cockpit will be ready for priming and painting. Did not intend to do a kitbash but what the heck.

Album image #18
Put the decals on. Ran into some problems during that. Part of the decals where so brittle and stiff that they could not being applied. The big yellow stripes turned out to be useless because they fell apart when getting contact with water...

Album image #19
So those had to be masked and painted. Other decals from the same sheet required a lot of decal softer to match the contours of the body shell while others worked perfectly. again: all decals came from the same sheet. Never experienced that before...

Album image #20
Drivetrain, suspension, exhaust etc. where painted and mounted. Realized now that I forgot to fill the holes I drilled from rollbar attempts Mk1 - Mk3... bummer! Skid plate under the engine was scavenged from the italeri kit...

Album image #21
Also added disc brakes from the italeri kit. Gives the wheels a wider stance.

Album image #22
Clear cote (gunze mr. Super clear) was applied. This time I wil not polish it: Came out of the rattle can pretty smooth and I don’t want to achieve a show car Finish on this rally car.

Album image #23
Window trim was also done by using Matt black decal stripes and free hand painting...

Album image #24
On the seats I used zero textured paints and Kevlar decals...

Album image #25
Dashboard painted after reverence pictures from the real thing. Instrument decals from the italeri kit and an reji model sheet. Steeringwheel also painted with zero textured paints...

Album image #26
Interior was completed. No problems at all...

Album image #27
Road book of mr. Geistdörfer (co pilot) from the spare box...

Album image #28
Seat-belts from Scale production, seat-bealt clips from the reji-model etched sheet...

Album image #29
Anti-glare shields made from scratch (blister pack and copper wire)

Album image #30
Cowling painted and put in place...

Album image #31
Clear parts where also installed. Had to cut out the rear window and glue it separately to achieve a good fit. Clear parts where glued in place by using 5 minute 2k epoxy glue just to make sure that they stay where they are supposed to. Rear wing was mounted using white glue (zero crystal clear). I tend to ruin the surface finish of my models when using super glue...

Album image #32
Turn lights came from czech truckmodel. Looks so much better than just painted orange...

Album image #33
Same thing with the reflectors on the rear...

Album image #34
Been working on the wheels. One thing that bothered me was that the Tamiya kit has tyres with Kleber label but the actual car is spotting Michelin sponsor stickers...

Album image #35
So the Kleber brandig has to go by use of 400 and 1000 grid Tamiya sanding sponge. Positive side effect: it takes the shine from the tyre walls...

Album image #36
The rims from the Renaissance set are spotting holes for the tire valves so I added some...

Album image #37
Finished wheels. Maybe I will add a little wash later (not quite sure yet)

Album image #38
Auxiliary lights where glued together, primed and painted. Reflector painted with my trusty molotow felt pen. Quite fragile so this things will be glued in place as very last step when finishing the model...

Album image #39
Rearlight was installed. Nothing fancy here: just Tamiya transparent red and orange and molotow chrome...

Album image #40
Turn lights same procedure. Added some etched netting to the front end. Real car spots that too (the netting. Don’t think that it’s made from photo etch 😉)

Album image #41
Engine was completed. Several details where added to the Kit parts. Used pictures from the real thing as reference. Side mirrors and towing hook where also added...

Album image #42
Aaaaand: it’s done!

Album image #43
In the last and final step small detail parts like bonnet locks, windscreen wipers etc. where added to the model...

Album image #44
Auxiliary lights where glued on, antenna made of steel wire and mud flaps made from some blister pack has been installed. That’s pretty much it. Et violà! Will add more pictures of the finished model when there is better light...

Album image #45
As promised a few impressions of the finished model...

Album image #46
It resembles the 1984 Rallye Monte Carlo winner car from Audi Sport works team piloted by mr.
Walter Röhrl and his co Pilot mr. Christian Geistdörfer...

Album image #47
„Der Lange“ has won the Rallye leading with 1:13 minutes before the 2nd placed Audi Sport Quattro A2 piloted by Blomquist/Cederberg...

Album image #48
The audis dominated this Rallye by finishing 1st (Röhrl/Geistdörfer), 2nd (Blomquist Cederberg) and 3rd (Mikkula/Hertz), leading with a whopping 24:24 Minutes to 4th placed Renault 5 Turbo piloted by Thérier/Vial...

Album image #49
Mr. Röhrl always stated that his four victories at the Rallye Monte Carlo where is most important achievements...

Album image #50
Album image #51
A finished model is never perfect: the body shell is warped a little bit so the engine hood does not close perfectly. Could not figure out how to solve this issue...

Album image #52
Overall I am quite happy with the result.

Album image #53
It’s not a 100% but very close for my liking.

Nice work👍 Belts look amazing, working on a Porsche 934 r/n and used them, too. Great product.

Thanks Alexander. I really like scaleproduction. They do have some cool stuff. I used the Motorsport seat-belt set on my Porsche 934 build too.

Have you seen the wheel set from scaleproduction for the 934? That's awesome! I would also recommend the headlights set for Porsche g models.

The rims from the kit are definitely passable, but I've used SP wheels on my 911 RS build. The kit headlights are a pain in the a** to mask but are passable too imho.

Your kits are built so super clean. Love it!!! But this is not the USCP engine, right? I hope mine arrives this week

Dennis
Thanks Thomas!
Nope: that's the engine from the Tamiya kit. Pretty complete: all major components are there. I just added Kevlar decals, heat shielding, wires, plumbing etc...

I wonder if tamiya will reissue this one again. Mine was done in the eighties so I`m ready for a new one. I saw these beast`s four years in a row and I still remember the rooaaarr they made. It´s unforgetable. Good job Dennis. Beautifull model.

Thank you guys!
Jorge: you will find this kit on eBay for a reasonable price of you are patient.
This kit is very oldschool and you have to put some effort in it.
My hope is on Aoshima/Nunu or Belkits to release an up to date kit of the Ur-Quattro (wishful thinking since they where releasing quite a number of 80s rallycars recently 😉 )
