Working on my 1:1 cars
This tired old girl (213,000 miles!) is well deserving of an update!
Let the fun begin!
Brakes need attention desperately.
Rear rotors are seized on to the hubs, and no amount of whacking is getting them to budge! Gonna have to think on this one...
Ok, I thought of something.
Cleaning, masking, painting... quite a familiar routine by now!
One of those projects that manages to consume every inch of space you give it.
Cleaning up the surface rust on the front end while it's apart with a wire wheel and some factory match paint.
New look for the fender flares.
Modifying the grille to accept a custom insert.
Brakes are lookin sweet!
New wheels really bring it all together.
Front end back together.
Dramatic photoshoot time!
This was back last year... a splash of color for my other 1:1
It is imperative that the engine is also blue.
Factory badges removed with hot water and a plastic scraper.
Masking tape used as a guide for placement.
New black badges stuck on accordingly.
Much better!
Carbon fiber appliques for the dashboard.
Cutting damascus steel from a knifemaking blank for some accent pieces. Both were sanded to the correct size and contour on a belt sander.
The surface of the steel must be immaculately clean for the next step.
Etching station is ready to go!
Several short baths in warm ferric chloride...
...with water rinses and a quick touch with some scotchbrite in between.
Finishing it off with a soak in some mildly acidic coffee to enhance the color.
Et Voila!
Logos were etched by a local engraving shop, and the parts were clearcoated for protection.
The shift knob is probably my favorite!
