Construction of scratch built 1/200 Prince Madog 1968
The real thing. Image from Bangor University.
Half circle iron bar added (annoyingly a bit wonky on this side) and marking for port side portholes. Positions taken from photos as I only have drawings of star board side.
Portholes drilled on port side.
Main mast attached in place with Uhu glue. Mast is brass tube.
Bilge keels added. Made form plasticard. One is a bit wonky, but only just.
Bulsa carving
Perfect plastic putty
I have done quite a lot of the fore mast now. I'll add the lamps after the main hull and structure colours are painted.
Starting to build the 3 winches.
Adding more details to the winches and anchor windlass. I used Aber PE hand wheels set.
Dry fit of finished winches
Anchor windlass dry fit
Ladder rungs added to main mast and A-frame.

Another coat of primer and then ready for painting. Some parts still need to be built, but they can wait. I need to design the decals at some point too.
Pre-shading
Pre-shading
Pre-shading
Off-white (white with yellow added) for the upper hull and super structure over the pre-shading
Masking for lower hull colour
Some more painting done. Touching up the airbrushed white with a brush looks awful. Not sure how I will improve on that.
Bit more progress. Davits mostly made.
Weather station to of the mast now made. I thought this would be impossible for me to make from scratch, but glad I did it now.
Wind instrumentation on mast
Starting to build the self inflating life raft canisters. I used round rod and sanded the end round. I then used half round profile styrene strip to create the ribs of the cannister.
I used photo etch ladders to make the cannister racks.
Dry fitting the unpainted three raft and rack assemblies. I think they will look fine. They took maybe two hours to build, but worth it. It is satisfying building items from scratch with styrene.

Your entire Research Vessels collection is interesting - and thumbs up for expanding it by using different means: mainstream kits, 3D prints, paper models, and now scratch-building... Respects! 👍

Thanks Alex. The options are fairly limited with mainstream plastic kits. It's proving very slow progress with scratch building. But the hull is almost done, which is a major part of the build. I've learnt a lot so far anyway! Doing water line models would be much easier, but I like to see the hull form and propulsion.

Thanks. The hull is not ideal. It's made from Balsa wood which proved hard to get sharp and straight edges with. If I had the skills I would 3D design and print, but I don't. I would probably use bass wood next time as it would keep the edges better.

Nicely done! Interesting way of scratch build, which could also be used for aircraft.

Mr James
Impressive.! And well documented to help us, lesser human modellers, marvel at your skills 🙂

I've got to finish this model soon. It's been nearly 4 years since I started according to this. Think I'll not scratch build a whole model for another twenty years me thinks.
