Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3, 4./JG 77, Norway 1940

Time to start my next project, which actually started as an impulse buy at my local hobby shop. This Bf 109E-3 (White 5) was flown by Obfw. Jakob Arnoldy of 4. Staffel, Jagdgeschwader 77. Stationed in Mandal, Norway during 1940.

The venerable Tamiya kit is the what i've chosen (or rather, impulse-bought). When it comes to early 109s in 1/72, the tamiya kit is still a very solid option, even with the much more modern Special Hobby offering.

That being said, there are a couple of errors in the painting chart: the spinner is shown painted in overall RLM70, but reference pictures show that this was only for the back plate, while the spinner itself was painted RLM21 White, which was common for JG 77 aircraft of the period. The swastika should also be further forwards, and the lower canpy frame should be painted RLM65, not RLM70. But aside from that, it's all correct.

Cockpit painted up with a mixture of Tamiya acrilics and Mr.Hobby Laquers.

I've accidentally destroyed the seatbelt decal, so i've replaced it with tape, which looks passable enough.

It has been an absolute pleasure assembling this kit.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/9/7/8/1472978-72093-68-720.jpg)
The fit of all the parts is excellent and there are no major gaps.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/9/7/9/1472979-72093-71-720.jpg)
Only this minor gap above the air filter required filling.

Also filled are two ejector pin marks on the back of each wheel.

Camouflage painting complete.

It has been an absolute blast painting with MrHobby laquers, very easy to use and a rock-hard finish.

Thank you very much Villiers, though it seems i've made a mistake. I've posted pictures and history of White 3, but the aircraft i intend to build is actually White 5, which is the one is the cover picture.

I've updated the album, which now only shows White 5. If anyone is interested in the original pictures, i've found them here: asisbiz.com/il2/Bf-1..way-Apr-1940-01.html

Great build, and if you haven't tried their G6, it's a beautiful build too.

Thank you Andy and Jennifer and Andy. I'm aware of the quality of the Tamiya G-6, perhaps i'll pick one up is a spot a good deal on it

As promised, a few more pictures have been uploaded. I have to say that i've had a tremendous amount of fun making this model. The kit was simple, well detailed, assembled very quickly and easily. Painting was a breeze thanks to the dedicated Mr.Hobby laquer paints, and the decals where the only somewhat frustrating step due to them being quite fragile. Aside from that, this might be the most fun i've ever had making a model, and i can't wait to build more. Thanks to everyone for their kind words and for following. Now comes the task of choosing my next project: something more modern perhaps?
