insane detailing. a work or art. it is almost a pity to paint it. but will be certainly be a stunner when finished!

Angel Yovtshev
Thanks for your comment, Spanjaard!
To be honest - I feel much more comfort with construction, than with painting and weathering.
I thought of finding a fellow modeler, who has the opposite preference, but I'm not quite sure how we can manage the sharing of a finished model 😉

Hi friends, thank you for your kind comments and welcome !
Work done on the exhaust, several tints used to get the dirty filthy metal look on the feathers.

I received a very nice package from Japan, hypersonic products are really top of the breed, the clean top tail is a drop fit.
The Martin baker H5 seats are looking tremendous, almost a shame to hide them with a sitting crew.
Cheers

Hi gentlemen,

Work on the hot end, and the stand.

Stand was finally done doing a circle of surfacer sanded mirror (I wish it really was..) painted it black. Then I glued over plastic parts cut and painted for the skull. all in all it's better looking (imo) than an all painted logo as there is some 3d relief on the bone parts.

The hot end was done using lot of metal shades, masks, and sponge rubing, finished with a layer of tamiya panel liner.

Cheers.

Hey guys ! Thank you Spanjaard, Daniel & Whiteglint for your kind words! Appreciated.

I have some long overdue progress to post. In the form of a crew, all happy with their new orange suits and adequately decorated helmets.

Helmet decals were sent to me by a fine Canadian gentleman that had them in extra from the academy J boxing. I can't be gratefull enough as these are the most visible bits under the big closed canopy.

A few more work on the seats, stencils & joining straps, and the cockpit will be finished.
Cheers

Hi fellow scalematers. An update finally.
Here is the result of 2 days of strike at work. With no access to the office, another desk took priority.
First step with no pictures was to fill and sand smooth the last uneven spots remaining.
Then a final coat of alu to reveal the next final uneven spots, and so on until there was none left.
Marbling is done with Rlm66, excuse the choice but it's a good dark grey tone.
Then navy white is sprayed in fine passes until the white looks uneven, but not too much..
The next day same process is done on the upper side with the navy grey.

Then the fun is beginning with the mask application and the start of the marking spraying.
Next session is due soon.
Cheers

Hey Roland, thank you mate ! Glad you like it!

Some kind of an update with eduard's stencils application. I put them on the traditional way, with only the micro-sol (blue one, at least I'm sure of the colour)
Then I peeled the film with scalpel to lift it up and tweezers. The remnants of the film glue were cleaned up with a q-tip imbibed with mineral spirit. Be careful on this last step as rubbing too hard will also wear down and ultimately makes disappear the decal ink. It's interesting for weathering purpose but must be handled with care.
Next up are the wings stencils.
Cheers

I am not a natiph Phantom phan, but I really do like your build. Comin´ along very nicely. In flight? You´re my man! 🙂
20 May 2022, 11:21
Mathieu
Hi guys, thank you for the encouragements Sergej & Michael!
@Sergej, il will try to keep it slightly shiny, like it is now, think I will have to varnish it as the weathering is add a bare flat finish where it is applied.
@Michael, i was not a Phantom phanatic either, but the love for the type grows as the build goes on. In flight is my compulsary display for 1/48 models. Cheers

Mathieu,
Beautiful model! Your gear door scratch build are labeled #1-7. Are those one try after another till you were satisfied? Seems like we're missing the final photos on this masterpiece. Most of us will never achieve this level of craftsmanship.
3 July, 10:17
Mathieu
Hi Paul, Yes 7 Tries. I could have gone with a few more, but elected to manually crafte the little areas needing care for a good fit.
I have to report this build is still lying unfinished on top of a shelf. I am a bit lazy doing the missiles and tanks.
Now that I see the date on the pictures (2 years ago!!) I'll probably kick my ass and finish this up.

Cheers.

I didn't know what to build next after Bandai's B-Wing was completed. So I let fate decide. Do I already regret it? I'm not sure. After reading some build logs on the internet my list of improvements and corrections is quite long. But then again - I'm sure it'll all work out 🙂 In any case this will be different from the Bandai kit which required nearly no putty and took me merely a month to build.
6 February 2021, 10:13

Curious and original way to choose the next kit. I'm sure the resulting model will be very good.

Thanks for all your interest!
@JD: Who knows. Perhaps's I'll use this method for choosing the next kit again in the future. The Star Destroyer is still "in the pod" 🙂
@Oliver Zwiener: Yes, kind of! I've already built Revell's new tool Gannet AS Mk.4 and Trumpeter's T.Mk.5. The AEW.3 will now complete my Gannet collection.
By the way, my fiancée said "That's a cute plane, and it has a propeller" when she saw Sword's box art. Well, there is somethign to it. With a bit of imagination the Gannet could be one of Pixar's "Planes" characters...

I didn't know "Jimbo and the Jetset" before but youtube is your friend. So, yes, I can also picture the Gannet in that show 😄
By the way, for full disclosure: I'm more or less following what this guy did with his Gannet: obscureco.wordpress...egory/fairey-gannet/
Or at least I'll try.

Some more progress in the last couple of weeks. The fuselage is now closed. Despite some very careful dry fitting the seams will need some filling and sanding. But nothing too bad. Next I'll ad some detailwork to the main landing gear wells.

14 March 2021, 08:50

Thanks, Ricardo!
@Alexander: Yes, perhaps I'll choose the next project like this again. It certainly adds some excitement to the hobby 😄
@Oliver: Kabelbinder nutze ich gern für ovale Formen wie Flugzeugrümpfe. Und wenn man den kleinen Pin im "Schloss" der Kabelbinder nach oben drückt, kann man sie wieder öffnen und erneut verwenden.

I´m in. I can't miss the Gannet...
21 March 2021, 17:14

Welcome, David!
During the last week I spent some more time on wheel bay details and the exhausts. Building this kit is really time consuming, at least when I compare it with the "shake'n bake" Bandai B-Wing kit that I've built before this one.
21 March 2021, 20:45
Nathan Dempsey
I'd love to build this in 1:48 but since the only one was a unicorn-like resin kit I'll happily watch your build 🙂 Looks like you've made a fine start!
21 March 2021, 20:53
Bernd Korte
Thanks, Nathan! I'm glad you like what you're seeing!
Over the last couple of days I finished the wheel bays and glued the wings together. Today I spent the morning working on the landing and position lights in the wings. For the landing lights there are in fact some transparent parts in the kit. The position lights need to be added from scratch. I really like how it turned out 🙂

8 May 2021, 18:51

Thanks Cuajete! In the meantime I finished decal work. As some fellow modeller's have already noted the decals of this kit are very thin. So it's best to slide them from the paper directly onto the model surface. Otherwise they will curl up.

Ricardo Reis
Coming out nicely, Bernd! 👍
22 May 2021, 18:53

Thanks Ricardo! There was a minor set back, though - when I confused ultra thin plastic cement with decal soft. Luckily the decal could be saved as described in the picture.

12 June 2021, 08:42

Thanks Guy Rump! The finish line is now almost there. The build takes more time during these final steps as I discovered a few details just now which I still had to add - for example the fuel dump pipes coming out at the end of the pylons.

I managed to finish the kit this weekeend. Here are a few photos that I just took. In the end the build was quite demanding in some places, but now I'm quite happy with the result 🙂

This project has been waiting long enough, now the time has come! The "shell", seen here, is quickly put together, the glued seams are still wet, so to speak. I plan to show the A90 in a proper dio - gliding just above the water!

With these pictures I am starting a project that I am deliberately building parallel to the Boeing 307 'Stratoliner': both aeroplanes are apparently based on the same concept and not only have identical designs, but also share components such as wings, landing gear and engines. The Academy kit has an excellent fit and a refreshing simplicity, so to speak: the interiors would be practically empty except for the simplest seats. So I borrowed a little from my etched parts box and fitted the metal seats with matching upholstery. It certainly looks better than originally! 🙂

Now the B-17B has its NMF dress and will not take it off: in the meantime I have sprayed a layer of gloss paint so that I can start applying the decals tomorrow.

That makes me very happy - thank you!
A few quick pictures of the current state: I tried to apply the decals yesterday, but the Academy material turned out to be extremely brittle. The beautiful decal marking in red-white-blue on the rudder was a complete self-destructior - and that to such a clear and impressive extent that I even wanted to take a photo of it, because it looked funny 🙂
Well, no big deal, I'll just spray this part myself. In general, the photos make it clear that the decals need to be repaired or even redone in some places.

Many times it is better to paint instead of using some decals. Luckily that has an easy solution, Roland. You do much more complicated arrangements than this and always have very good results. Cheer up!

A few new pictures of the B-17B under construction: the tail is now in the characteristic red-white-blue colour scheme, now the phase begins in which the need for improvement and touch ups is recognised and the various small parts such as antennas, brake lines or the engines/cowling - well, here one can no longer speak of "small parts" due to the amount of etched parts. I can't wait to see how the clear parts have held up under the masking!

With these pictures I open the book report on Roden's Junkers D.1: I tried to extend the interior with some steel wire, the seat belts are from Eduard. For the detailing I downloaded the very interesting building instructions from Wingnut Wings for the large D.1 in 1:32, which is quite helpful if you want to have a good documentation as a basis for detailing. I'm also going to realise one of the WW variants, which I immediately liked: all in Dural/ NMF with only a minimal set of markings.
