Here we go. The Leo is drying right now and i already started my new project. This time it will be an T-55 that was taking part in the Operation Danube in Czechoslovakia in 1968.
Basic kit is the Takom T-55A and Miniarm conversion that was made for this kit.
To build the tank of this time you have to get the OMsh tracks as the kit only provide the later RMsh tracks. The RMsh tracks were fitted later during the modernization of the T-54, T-55 and T-62.
Takom provide their own AF set of OMsh track therefore i didn't had to search long. 🙂
If you want to use the OMsh tracks you have to use another sprockets. The sprockets that are build in step two of the instruction are for the later tracks and are wider. Fortunately the parts for the right sprockets are also in the kit but are not needed for the build. You have simply to use the part A19 and A23 instead of A18 and A22. 😄

Nice subject choice, now make me want to build mine, watching with anticipation

Here a few new pictures of the build. The parts from Miniarm are very nice and have sharp details.
Do not wonder about the tracks, they will be glued to the road wheels at the end. 😄

Hull is completed and i moved to the turret.
I dont know if someone going to use this conversion in the future as Miniart already released an T-55 that is suited for this time but i will write down a few things i noticed through the build of the hull:
- You will need 91 links of the OMsh tracks as there is no info in the box.
- Lower glacis plate is empty so you have to remove everything on it
- Parts J38, J64 and C14 are not needed on the upper glasic plate
- Use Part J8 instead of J7 for the driver hatch
- Right engine deck are the steps 15-1, 16-1 and 17-1
- Part J21 on the engine deck is not needed
- Front towing cable should be 112mm but is too long, cut it down to 106mm
Thats all for now.

Very, very cool and clean build. And fast as usual😉
Do you have colour reference for your particular tank?
6 April 2018, 21:47
Ingo F
Thank you Rene. Color will be overall green with white stripes on the turret and hull front. I have to look up what green i used on my T-10M back then and use it on this one too.
Can't decide if i should get the decals for the prague events or paint the number on the turret by myself. I am tending to create some masks and spray the numbers.

Rene Scheiblich
Those would be quite fiddly masks... Have fun cutting them out😉

Green and white, simple but pleasing. 👍 The b+w photo does look like there would be shades or some fading in the green.

Ingo F
Got many decals in my stash. Will use some of them as a template for the mask. 😄
As for painting i think i will go with black and white technique and a few different green tones. The rest will be done with oil weathering.

Base color is done. A.Mig-083 XB-518 was used as a base. Color modulation to simulate the discoloration was done with Green Khaki A.MIG-056, 4BO Russian Green A.MIG-019 and Light green Khaki A.MIG-058.

Nice job on shading the basecoat mate!
I can imagine this turning out awesome with a subtle filter and some oils.
But don't forget to enjoy the weather😉

Thank you Rene.
Don't worry will be outside for a bit. 😄

Detail paintig is almost done. Need to draw the unit/tactical signs on the side of the turret. No board number this time,

Love the colour variation you've achieved, you mentioned black and white, but then listed the various colours. Did you use both techniques or just the various colours for modulation. I'm less patient and a bit heavy handed so always looking at methods that I can use and this looks great. I haven't moved on much from cloud spraying areas with lighter colour.

Ingo F
Thank you Scott.
I used both techniques to break the plain green color and bring some variatons to the paint of this model. First of all i primed the model with Tamiya XF-69 Nato black. My standard prime color.
Then white paint was added to the exposed areas like turret top, turret sides, hatches, barrels, zip boxes, etc.
A.Mig-083 XB-518 was used as base color but just enough to cover up the primer and white spots but not too much. Next the 4BO Russian Green A.MIG-019 was used to creat shadows as this color is the darkest one of all four i used on this model. I used it on the lower parts of the turret, lower hull where the wheels are, lower glasic plate, sides of the upper glasic plate etc..
Then Green Khaki A.MIG-056 was used by misting it over a few areas, not the whole model.
Last color was the Light green Khaki A.MIG-058 that i used on the most prominent areas like hatches and the spots that were brighter from the white & black technique.
Thats all. I hope this will help you. 😄

So in essence... I need more paints ;P
Seriously, this looks awesome! A tad bright in a few spots maybe (to my eye), but I guess weathering will tune the tonal difference down a bit.
Good job on the rear assembly too. That gave me the fits on my last build 😄
10 April 2018, 22:31
Ingo F
Thak you Rene. 🙂
Varnish and weathering will compensate the brighter spots.
As you can see the log on the back is way too bright and looks like new. It will be much darker after the weathering and some pigments.

thanks for details

Nice job! The dark brown fits perfectly and ties the modulation together smoothly.

Thank you Rene. Took me a few hours to do the oil weathering and i am really satisfied with the result. Now i have to wait for 48h until the oil dries and i can continue. I wont do much more on the model. A "little" bit of chipping and pigments to the lower hull and tracks. Thats it.
I think i will start my new project while waiting for the oils to dry up. 😄

Less is sometimes more 👍
Hehe so we're in the same boat now😉
I've picked up an older kit I started a while ago, while my KV dries.
Trying to develop some scratchbuilding skills instead od watching paint dry 😄

I'll keep an eye peeled for your next build though.

Psst, it will be JGSDF Type 10. 😄

Thank you James and Dan! Really appreciate your comments guys. 😄
Now i am thinking of buildig a small diorama/vignette for it. Same scene that is on the thumbnail picture of this project.
21 April 2018, 19:59
Rene Scheiblich
Very nice finish Ingo!
But what happened to the turret markings? ;P
And I'm still amazed that you managed to get the headlight guard to look that good...😉

Nice idea with the dio, but I would omit the people in the photo 😄
And what kind of truck is that? 🤔
22 April 2018, 09:58
Ingo F
Thank you Rene. 🙂
Ehm ..... what turret markings? ... dont understand what you mean. 😄
I would just build one figure for the guy that is on the tank, no more.

Ingo i suppose it's done now, ended up a magnificent model, big huge kudos! 👍👍👍
