But it also led to understanding that for camouflage of warm and bright colors it`s better not to experiment with black primer any more.

Random PenguinIt took many layers to hide black on areas for highlighting (on upper side), but these areas still look dirtier than I was imagining before painting. Next time I`ll try to paint the surface in dark tone of the wished color at first, not from complete black. Need more practicing (and knowledge of colors) 🙂

Peter HardyI think you are overthinking it. Surely there is another area of the build you could make bigger gains with. If I produced the underside I would be in raptures!

Just try it, Peter! I used vallejo in mix with glaze medium and airbrush thinner to get semitransparent layers. In case of tamiya, well, I tried the same, but with mixing gloss varnish and thinner, and it wasn`t good enough. Tamiya is too opaque. Another way too add lots of thinner, but with my cheap aerograph it`s difficult to control highly diluted paint. Still on youtube Scaleton uses tamiya in similar technique, but I think he`s overdoing: Youtube Video

Spanjaardwell, i did prime my F4-J in black, then give it a bit of white all around (not as elaborate as the video) and then cover it with a white and gray to give it a used look. i would suggest to have a look at Michael Phillips albums (Fighting 84 ) specially his last F-18 or his Viggen. he uses that technique in both. amazing results

Random PenguinSpanjaard, I don`t say, that black priming isn`t good technique, it works great with grey and light blue colors, but with sand or yellow, I think it should be red or orange base (primer`s) color.
Hmm, I looked at Fighting 84`s album about Viggen, seems, that he just used solid layers over this primer, not semitransparent, and some postshading after decals. Still his F-18 and Viggen both are great!
Well, now I also want to build a phantom .... Or at least, I should complete sanding and riveting on my Mig-23ML...

I used a yellow base color for my orange and it looks much better as with a black base.

Patrick HagelsteinReading all of this, watching all the movie clips from Doog's Models and Scale-a-ton and trying a little bit of black basing with some blue for a distinct blueish tone for myself, I can say that black basing is great for grey or otherwise subdued schemes. However, as Robber is painting 'vibrant' yellow and brown colors, I think a lighter or even more colorful base will do the trick better and gives a more vibrant feel to the end result.
Oh, and by the way... Build that Phantom! 🙂 👍
