Viking Night Attack - WIP

Album image #1
WSO Instrument cover - was just a single, straight, open piece. but quite easy to fix with sheet

Album image #2
Using Eduard PE here. The kits main instrument panels were good, the side panels: meh.
I painted the screens gloss black/green since this will be power off.
For my liking they colored their PE a bit too bright, like very light dark ghost gray, but there will be wash

Album image #3
No L-Brackets on this newer airframe model since they use internal stiffeners. (But there are earlier BuNo USMC D-Models that still have the brackets!)
Cut these up and used them for the 3 little support plates on both sides

Album image #4
Sanded down the weird round fin tips. Also sawed out and slightly angled the rudders

Album image #5
made a gun from a sprue disc and stretched cotton bud

Album image #6
the infamous HB Mad Riveter was unleashed on this kit as well. My solution was a massage with acrylic putty. Through drying shrinkage it still leaves some shallow rivets which are more suitable than the bullet holes before that. The rivets on the lids were closed with proper putty and sanded flush, I will add new rivets along the edge there

Album image #7
No chafflare buckets in the kit so I decided to scratch the actual dual buckets. This is just the first step, next will be putty and sand. My original plan to drill the holes with the PE template from the hasegawa kit failed because I am too clumsy and my tools suck. My new plan is to just paint them with the PE pieces as masks. Still better than nothing.

Album image #8
Kit actually offers interior on the rear end, sad they messed it up with giant pin constructions...

Album image #9
Album image #10
cockpit in its place, also I added the bulges on the canopy frame

Album image #11
had to get rid of some plastic to marry the two halves

Album image #12
Otherwise fit was ok, especially the side fuselage pieces were not a problem (as on some other hornets)

Album image #13
thats something eeh ... special...fixed that on the right

Album image #14
installed the bird slicers with sheet stripes on masking tape

Album image #15
finished the flare buckets. As you can see, some more putty work on the underside, as always with the hornets LEX. Also modified the centerline pylon from the straight to the angled shape

Album image #16
Some orange holo foil added to the Nite Hawk pod

Album image #17
applied some holo foil to the HUD, quite a nice highlight on a plain gray plane
I also exchanged the kits seat to the more recent SJU-17 + added the MFD cameras left+right to the pilot, both stolen from revell super hornets

Album image #18
lots of panels to shade

Album image #19
Album image #20
First rough paint layer, I usually go panel by panel, leaving a dark edge arround the panel lines which will get treated seperately. This way I get an irregegular look over the whole plane and dont accidentally kill the preshade.
Blue: This panel line along the spine was tragically forgotten by HB, rescribed it
Red: Deepened this one significantly as it is a very prominent gap on the original

Album image #21
Second coat is on. I also added some resprayed areas using the "fresh" dark ghost gray from vallejo, the rest is the bleached out looking DGG as it comes out of the AK RC 251

Album image #22
masking the layout, the ring is cut from the dropper of an empty vallejo bottle and glued with PVA

Album image #23
usual method of dabbing cheap thick acrylic paint. In hindsight I should have done this less thick in the beginning as it tends to push into the crevices and under the tape and you have to clean up. Which is not that hard as the paint is easy to remove

Album image #24
Voila - painted with light ghost gray, which will get wheathered down. Only the ring got a bit too fat maybe, but ok

Album image #25
looks nice+rough

Album image #26
CM stores loaded - used PE pieces from hasegawas hornet as paint mask

Album image #27
decals check! Very good quality by twobobs

Album image #28
GPS Dome added to the spine

Album image #29
Sadly the intakes end after a few cm and you look at the inner gear bay structure...I am not one of the people who aim their torchlights down the intakes - but that needed fixing. So I put a background with a dark grey gradient airbrushed on.

Album image #30
thats how the hatches look after new riveting, and a wash

Album image #31
weathering of the top side done, but the cell phone cam is still loving the blue too much in daylight...
btw, HB forgot the small but important exhaust holes between the fins, watch out for that if you build it

Album image #32
under artificial light it looks closer to reality with the camera considering the blue-amount

Album image #33
on its legs now

Album image #34
Sorry friends of the soap, but thats how I like my models 😉

Album image #35
the kit offers seperate slats + flaps but to make them extended you have to cut the hinges and re-attach

Welcome Roland+Maciej! I made some progress in the meantime and finished the major build stages. I really love the elegant shape of the D-Hornets, can't wait to start painting her 🙂

Thanks Roland, no, its not a shake+bake by any means, still nothing major to get mad at. Dryfitting is really advisable though😉

First paint layers are down! I plan to keep a bit more tidy since it its ground based, but who knows where the road will take me😉

@Peter: Thank you! I ask myself the same question, the kinetic is still on the wishlist. What I can say is that it comes with many more options for the different airframe updates. This one is based on an early D.

@ James&Jos: Great to have you on board! 👍

@Murad: Welcome! Great if I can be of help, I'll try to point out the major issues

I just went back and read how you approached the paint work on this build. I'm going to have to try that out 🙂

@ Nathan: I found concentrating on individual panels really being a big step in bringing me closer to the desired result, previously I painted big surface patterns as you would on a car and it really makes a difference in the end

@Slavo: thanks+amen - a beautiful mess is what we aim for 😄

@ all: Thank you for joining in, a happy new year to everyone as well!

Album info

This HB Kit looks like a hornet, but only from afar - a lot of work needed to get it in the right direction...
