B-Wing Bandai 1:72

Album image #1
This is more or less what I used on the cockpit - which offers tons of detail! The only things missing are Future (for a gloss "in between" finish) and the Model Color that I used for the pilot's seat. Mr Mark Softer was used to tame the two decals that went on some raised structure.

Album image #2
The pilot is still work in progress. I'm not much of a figure painter as you can see. His suit is still glossy and sticky because I used some very old Revell enamel colour - which I probably didn't stir well enough.

Album image #3
I tried using Revell Color Stop to simulate some paint chipping. First the parts where airbrushed with Vallejo Model Air Gray Base. When this was dry I applied some small spots of Color Stop here and there, using a sponge. After that the light grey color (50% Light Gull Grey + 50% White as per Bandai's instructions) followed and the Color Stop was rubbed off.

B-Wing in a box: By now all parts have been separated from the sprues and are in different stages of being painted and weathered.

Album image #5
There are many sub-assemblies that you can work on individually. Something I'm not used to (at least to this extent) when building my "regular" plane model.

Album image #6
Different metal colours have been used for the engine nozzles and guns. Some weathering still needs to be applied.

Album image #7
As suggested I applied a wash to the figure and highlightes some parts of the cockpit. The cockpit and the engine unit are now finished.

Album image #8
The gun pod needed a bit of filling. First I thought I could assemble the pod without the gun, but that proved to difficult as the gun part is designed to snap-fit into the pod.

Album image #9
Therefore I needed to mask the gun before I could paint the sanding seams.

Album image #10
The decals worked nice. The only difficult part was this threepart insignia decal (the insignia covers some raised structure on the wing). I recommend to start with the middle part of the insignia and then add the left and right parts to it. Some decal softener is vital for this task!

Album image #11
Oil and enamel washes were applied - the parts look far more interesting now!

Album image #12
After some more weathering with pigments the main sub-assemblies were put togehther. The parts needed to be modified at their joinings a bit so I could glue everything together at this later stage. Out of the box the big vertical wing would need to be attached to the fuselage a lot earlier.

Album image #13
It makes a lot of sense that the kit comes with a display stand - which I still need to put together.

Looks good! Tip for the figure: A layer of matte varnish and a brown wash work wonders. 🙂

Thanks guys! Yes, I'll apply a wash to the figure. I hope it'll look better then. In the meantime I tried out some paint chipping on the cockpit hull.

Some more progress. What's really different from my "regular" plane model is that this kit is best dealt with by building it in quite a few sub-assemblies.

Looking good Bernd! I'm following along, as I've started a B-wing myself, from the old Return of the Jedi kit. 👍

Thanks JD and Torsten! If possible it would be great to see some photos of your B-Wing, JD!
I've now finished decal work on my model. Tomorrow I'll start weathering/"washing" my brother's little space fighter!

It's looking great Bernd! Mine is nearly finished, just need to do the decals.. Too bad the old Airfix kit only came with 2 orange dots to work with. I'll look over my stash to see If I can find a few more to add.

Btw, if you use a black stand against a black background, you can get to sort of "hide" the stand. 🙂

Thanks guys!
@Treehugger: Yes, I definitely need a black back drop. A light grey model in front of a white back drop is not ideal for taking photos as I just had to experience...

Very well done. I'm happy that I got the last one from MBK in December. These Bandai kits are a joy to build.

Thanks for your comments! As you can see I have painted the display stand black (as per my brothers request who followed Treehuggers suggestion). If I only had a black backdrop as well! I just have white sheets for my photo box. In normal times I could just go to the paper store across the street to by some decent sized black cardboard. But, of course, that shop is still closed for lock down. Once I have a black background I'll take some more photos. A light grey model doesn't really "pop" in front of a white background 😄

@Torben H.: Yes, the kit was a joy to build! I'm really somewhat spoiled now...

Yeah black backgrounds are😎 Bandai kits are great, and have spoiled me for sure! They are so fun and easy to build, more like a puzzle really..

Thanks guys! I have to admit the B-Wing looks good in the display cabinet - but that's only its temporary home till I'll be able to give it to my brother (what a pity 😄).
