Out of an 80's naval warfare novel
Would you believe one of my cats chewed up the photo etch fore mast ?
Had to redo the water effects and added details - water is still not done yet tho - can't wait to see what bits I knock off working around the ships...
Updated water effects - fixed the Dallas bow wave
Helos on
Some scattered crew - can never get all of them to stand up straight
On to my favorite part - rigging 😛
Noticed this poor fellow while doing paint touchups
PE to the rescue!
Rigging in progress
Rigging cleaned up
Note to self - pat on the back for working on rigging skills; reminder to stop installing masts facing the wrong way (foremast is 180° out of kilter)
Everyone done in a matt finish - ready to call this done!
Yes, that guy is still overboard...
Dramatic action shot
There, all better 😉

Just realized today that the bow wave on the Dallas is all wrong - spent some time on the water effects and detailing

On to the rigging stage…any recommendations for what works best in 1/700 scale? I have 0.05mm wire (pictured in the last couple photos), but it's not the easiest to work with. Thoughts?

There are multiple options, Ultra Fine Lycra rigging Whi..NFINI Model IR-0202W, 1:700) or High Elastic Rigging Thread (Uschi van der Rosten 4007, No) rename two of them (some others are rebooting the same stuff)

Thanks Spanjaard! One more question to all - what glue works better with the elastic thread - CA or PVA? I tend to like PVA since it's more forgiving, but it takes longer to set and isn't as strong. Or is there another option?

I have only used CA, so I can not say if PVA woukd work. The problem would be to hold the thread in place until it is dry.....

OK, I'm ready to call it a day on this one or I'll just keep finding little things to fiddle with, leading to repairs ;P
A few learnings from this project:
1) 0.05mm elastic thread is the way to go for 1/700 rigging - I was glad I had some Uschi from one of my Flyhawk kits for this (thanks Spanjaard!)
2) I need to stop installing radar masts backwards (note the foremast on the Lake Erie) - grrrr
3) Unless it's a Flyhawk kit, check to make sure the kit-supplied PE rails will fit the entire model - I used at least 3 different kinds of rails to fill in all of the gaps on both ships (which both came with PE frets in the box), so I try not to look closely at my own work there - the macro photos don't help with this
4) Cotton makes for nice water effects

Really nicely done. Good that you gave some help to that poor sailor overboard 😉

Thought I was done, but I just couldn't leave that sailor in the water, so see photo 33 with him onboard, posing next to his new favorite safety item.
Also did a final gloss coat on the water.

Thanks all for the likes! Looking back, I miss the nice clean gray surfaces on modern ships 🙂
Don't know what people see in camo schemes on WW2 ships…

Had these models sitting around and I wanted to make something Tom Clancy-esk.
