Converted from the 1st Motor Machine Gun Brigade in October 1940, the 26th Armored Brigade was established under command of the newly formed 6th Armored Division. On November 8,1942 the Brigade landed at Bone, Algeria as part of Operation Torch. The Campaign in Tunisia would last until May 1943, ending the Axis presence in North Africa. Italy was next and the 6th AD fought on the Gothic Line in August and September 1944 and in the Spring Offensive of 1945 advancing toward Bologna, eventually bypassing it and pursuing the retreating Germans into Austria.
