Good luck Andy!
The Algerian is interesting, but in case you need more inspiration, there were a couple of metallic Egyptian ones with colorful tails and interesting unit markings.
This decal sheet here is particularly well documented:
MiG-17 Around The World - As.. I (ModelMaker D72155, 1:72)
And preview pictures of the instructions can be found here:
super-hobby.de/produ..27.html?partner_id=9
And btw, I am not sure if this is of interest to you, but the seat from the Airfix kit is wrong. It's a weird representation of a KK-1 seat which the MiG-17 never had in the series production. You would need a KK-2 seat, which is offered by Pavla or Amigo Models, but it's very very difficult to find anywhere.

Thanks Marius, the decals aren't in the best of registers either.I wanted to do aluminium to again test my skills in this medium. I'd heard about the seat issues, and with the one supplied. Perhaps I'll check the differences to see if there's a wprk-around?, do you know of any?

Taking a seat, of course! 😉 (in the near future I intend to mash up the Kovozavody and the Airfix kits in order to build the proper Polish "Last of the LiM's")

Robert, can't you do it through the Airfix with some aftermarkets? I've pretty much assembled it today/yesterday- the fit is pretty good. Not sure if it was me or the kit, but some attention to filling around the nose is all so far….

It is simply because I have had Kovozavody kit in my stash 😉 - the decals are better (the ones included in Airfix kit are not wholly adequate...), yet Airfix is much more modeller-friendly, as you've proven this above 🙂

I agree with Bernd. I also prefer the Cambodian one for the red ray, although the Algerian would also look very good in Andy's master hands. That snake and the grey-upper over aluminium could be very nice 👍
Waiting for the next progress.

That NMF looks great, Andy! (but Soviet-build planes never looked shiny, as they were covered with some 'protective' transparent lacquer, to the best of my knowledge. Here you can see few museum examples: Polish Air Force Museum - Dęblin | Album by podkon - it's up to you, whether to tone down the shine or not. Personally, I would leave the NMF as it is now 😉 )

Andy, that's actually a really good looking MiG-17! Congratulations on the very good looking model! I don't remember seeing a North Korean one too often.
For the sake of the discussiom, I'll also add a short comment regarding the shininess: Robert is right that they were covered from the factory (together with all MiG-15s, and early MiG-21s) with a varnish coat mixed with a metallic pouder (5%-10%). The result varied depending on the factory. Nevertheless, I am not convinced that the museum pieces from Robert's link are that representative though, since some are repainted in actual silver while those which weren't are of course afected by the age (Aluminium turns really matt after some decades).
Overall, if we're looking at photographs from the 50s-60s, there were several skin panels which were somewhat shiny, but many rather semi-matt.
One fast example:
But if I were you, I wouldn't change anything anymore, you model looks very good the way it is and taking photographs of models in NMF is in itself a bit tricky sometimes due ot lightning, at least in my case.

Thanks Cuajete!!, and Marius - do you think a coat of semi-gloss may help tone it down, or matt even?

Did a lot of sanding areas that will be glued, masking, fitting parts to each other, and basic assembly while I'm on vacation. I got new decals from Siam decals as the originals are from 1968 and not in good shape. I'm not sure how old the Siam decals are but they are newer than '68. One thing that is apparent is the stripey tail decal doesn't fit at all. This is going to be a good challenge to resolve.

Decided to try to apply the 1960s decal for the cockpit, as I don't have an alternative. Had to soak it for about a minute in hot water to get it to release. As is typical for hawk kits the decal isn't the right size but you go to war with the decals you have. I got it to apply without shattering. Unsure if it will stick, very old decals like this often have to be glued in place.

I think the Siam Scale decals I'm using instead of the originals are about 20 years old but they're going on ok. A little thick, so not settling down into panel lines but I'll try some decal fluid once they set in place, hopefully they will on the aluminum surface! The roundels are two part so I will have to do a second layer…

An interesting detail I note while decaling. The panel lines on the fuselage are engraved. The panel lines on the wings are raised. Wtf.

Did a bunch of cut the decals into pieces to fit a different model than they were made for. Came out fairly well. Subassemblies are getting larger as the project comes together.

It's great that the kits can still be built after all these years.
The people in the factory's would have never believed the model they are packing wouldn't be built until 2024 🤔🤣.
Nice build to follow 😃

Almost complete. Popped the main fuselage seam a bit 🙁 I had gone to a lot of work to hide it. For some reason even after carefully scraping the mating surfaces I just don't get good adhesion. Maybe next time I will try only using CA for assembly on my next plated kit.

The decal sheet says 23rd squadron Kohkratiem AFB, but there's not much on the internets. Possibly a misspelling? The Royal Thai Air Force had F8F's from 1951 to 1963.
Thanks to Siam Scale for the decals, without which this project would be hopeless. The sheet number is 48003 if that helps anyone.

Complete! @desert marlin - I decided the seam on the bottom wasn't important enough to do a bunch of rework. It's an old 60's "chrome" plated model after all 🙂 I think it came out looking pretty good overall.

Sometimes it's nice for a vintage kit to look close to how it would be built originally.... Nostalgic.

@Matteo - The new mold products produced since around 2010 are generally nice quality(2CV, VW T1, 911G, Etc...) , but this product is so poorly made that it is ridiculous. I don't know what the production concept of this kit is. It is poor for a precision model, and it's not even easy to assemble.

With Revell you better check in advance how that specific kit is rated by others. They have tons of reboxes and quite a few kits where you just wanna ask: are you serious? But then, once in a while, just to show that they are able - in general - to be a serious modelling company, they release some really fine stuff. Doesn't hurt to be prepared what you're up against.

That diffusor is a tremendous improvement.
amazon.com/dp/B00004..aps%2C163&sr=8-3
Such a tool makes such work as fitting the diffusor panels to the chassis much easier (the thinner the needles/pins, the more precise the contour).
Just a german site to give an idea.

My advice is that when masking that way, 'Tamiya masking tape for curves' is much easier than paper tape.

Yes, it's a good option, but I still prefer the paper one.
I especially like its price when you need to paint a thin line 74 centimeters long.
