I started with Revells Arado for another round: this time I aim to get a representation of a civil floatplane, used in Sweden in the mid 40´s. Decals are from "Topdrawing 14", I trustfully hope they will work as good as they are looking...
You can see three building steps, next will see the decals fixed and the cowling painted blue. I am quite pleased with that subject -and looking forward to finsh that nice looking floatplane in the very near future 🙂

I am pleased you are interested! As soon as I got to know about that version I had to have that Kagero decals...
Look at that site (in German language) to get a very informative "biography" of that special Arado. It´s an article from "Flugzeug Classics" illustrated with rare pictures of the late SE-AWY.

The Swedish Arado got finished wirhout any further troubles; I did a decent and, as I hope, adequate amount of "wear and tear" similar to the condition shown in the few pictures of the real thing.
That was a rather dense build; enabled by the excellent and innovative Revell moldings and the trouble-free Cartograph decals. Anyway, for me it will be the last Arado floatplane for a while... 🙂

About picture 51: this is not a kit issue, you removed 2 essential parts from the sponsons. I initially had the same problem with the Revell reboxing of it. The sponsons should not be glued flat against the fuselage but the interior spars should be visible for a few mm. This will bring the wheels to a straight angle. You made a beautiful model of it, with those open doors!

You know come to think of it, I did have to trim down the posts on the sponsons wings since they weren't sliding in all the way. Guess it was like that for a reason haha. Must've been up too late for that one. I've seen a glimpse of your sh-3 in your ch-46 album. Would definitely love to see more of it.

WIP, 1983 ROTJ Airfix/MPC A-Wing Light Starfighter. Getting there, still deleting details. Airfix has the crappy tinted canopy, may switch out with a scratch built one from a F-14. Guns will be all converted to brass rod and wire detailing, need two cheap Revell 1/48 F-16 air intakes for the rear hyperdrive engines, as the kit part is naff. Side Torpedo launchers will be cut out and scratch built. I've already moved the rear central bulkhead further in so it's more scale. I won't actually use the landing gear, it'll be on a stand eventually. Size comparison to the 1/72 Rogue Squadron A-Wing I built last year
 7 February, 09:26
Ian Doody
Working on the rear Jump engine area, these will need replacing with 1/48 F-16 air intake parts, two stacked on top of each other, and some flatter jet nozzles, like the Bandai 1/72.

 30 November 2024, 14:57

Hey Felix, a very promising start. Unfortunately I can't give you any tips on the interior color, I only know that with American aircraft it sometimes depends on the factory, as the same type was painted differently in different factories.

Great work, can I ask how you went about the weighting? I tried lots of small lead fishing weights with my Airfix Mitchell but ended up having to fill not only the tiny area given but also the room, behind and just below the cockpit, also behind the control panel and part of the room just behind the cockpit, every space I could find. I'm new to building American bombers, all the RAF ones sit on their tail wheel. Do you or any of the people who have commented have any better ideas than lead? I'm really looking forwards to seeing this project develop (especially as I have the kit myself and need all the tips I can get). Thanks Richard. Following.

Dear Boywellum
Both the Mitchell and the Liberator require lots of weight. I bought liquid gravity but it's not heavy enough for the space provided. But there is an ladder for the entry door which will serve as a stand. So i have to go with that!
1  25 January, 06:55
boywellum
Thanks Felix, that is very kind of you, these kits must have been designed with something in mind for them to work with the actual spaces provided but I have never found a definitive answer anywhere. If any other of the contibutors to your most excellent post have any ideas that would be much appreciated. Maybe Airfix expect us to mix some concrete and pour that in 😉 Cheers Felix, BW
1  30 January, 02:46
Felix
Dear BW, some modellers work with fishing weights or lead? I haven't, unfortunately.
1  30 January, 06:14
Nicolas
Great progres. 👍
Years ago I build the old Revell /Monogram Liberator in 1/48. I decided to glue some lead at the rear side of the engine firewalls. It helped, but wasn't enoght (I forgot the lead at the nose wheel bay).
1  30 January, 06:23
Felix
@Nicolas, that must have been a big bird! I struggle to put this 1/72 Liberator into the paintbooth 🙂
I am glad this kit provides a ladder as support. I bought liquid weight for this build but it's not as compact as i hoped it would be and wouldn't do the job with the spaces provided.
 30 January, 07:11
Tony Tonov
Hi Felix,
I usually use fishing weights, the lead is more dense and has high specific weight. I fill all available space and fix it with PVA glue.
There are also aftermaket sets for the front interior, casted in white metal and intended to replace the plastic part:
B-24 Liberator Landing Gear ..aft Conversions 72009, 1:72)
This one however is designed for Hasegawa kit and most likely won't fit on Airfix one.
If non of this helps, I add more weight in front of the engine bays. This worked for me on my both Mitchell and He-219 (which btw is notorious tail-sitter kit).

Thanks a lot Alberto, glad you enjoy my modelling spam 🙂 did you get the kit too?
 30 January, 19:00
Alberto
Hi Felix, no, I built the old Liberator Airfix kit a while ago and had similar issues with the nose weight. I ended up using the ladder for the back door too 😄
1  31 January, 06:56
Pacific Strafer
Hi Felix, I built the Hasegawa Liberator kit same years ago. I built a box in the nose of the plane around the nose gear and filled the entire space with lead shot. I also glued some lead sheets into the hidden area of the radio operator's room. You can find pictures of this in this report -> modellversium.de/gal..d=8276&origin=mb

1  31 January, 10:44

Dear Tony, Alberto, Pacific Strafer and Martin, thanks a lot for all the nice comments and advice regarding weight! With this build i will have to go with the ladder in the rear section, it is what it is.

Wondering if your yellow issue can be fixed by laying down pink, then another coat of Humbrol 24?
1  7 February, 08:34
Tony Tonov
@Alec K, indeed, I usually underspray the yellow areas with pink, when I am looking for a warmer shade of the yellow.

@Felix, if you can mask the areas safely, I'd recommend to spray light layer of pink and then yellow. There are no decals there, aren't they?

It's basically a car that outlived the Nazis by 58 years, was manufactured or assembled in 20 countries, 21,529,464, units were manufactured, of which a 1963 model had already traveled by January 25, 1994, a World record 2,434,575 km, and reborn as the Beetle and is still around now running on electricity.

It was a car built for the people, the German people, unless your insinuating all Germans are Nazi's.. Thus the name Volks, " The People's car"

You're tough when you wire the on your first build in many years., and I think you did well! I want to try it on my next project. Did you buy the cables, hoses and stuff separately or was it part of the kit?

Started building the M4A3 Sherman Cougar kit from Asuka. No big plans with this one. Just gonna make a small base under it and a crew member refuelling on the engine deck. Have been using PE from Aber and Eduard and other after market stuff like stowage from Tamiya, Bronco and Legend on this model. Replaced the Asuka gun parts with a full gun mount and breech from Resicast. Don't know if I'm gonna use the figures on the pics. Just took them out of the spare box to see if these could work with the model.
 15 February 2021, 14:51

Not much happening here. Ordered a track link set from MiniArt and started building it to check the quality. Quality and detail are good I think.
Gonna replace the Asuka belt type tracks with these from MiniArt.

It's a bit late to mention it, perhaps, but those MiniArt tracks are not accurate for a late-model M4A3 like this 🙂 They're the T41 type, which were only used on early Shermans (and most M3 medium tanks), but by the time your tank would have been in service, if it had plain, flat, rubber-block track, they would have been T51. You can get those most easily from AFV Club: M4 T51-Track (AFV Club AF35026, 1:35)

Thanks Jakko for the like and your input. And you're right. I already replaced the MiniArt tracks. Gonna use them for an early M4A1 Sherman in the future. I'm using a Bronco T51 track set now.

They're a right pain to put together, and the track pins are a pain to just remove from the sprue. They're too thin, so they break easily, and it's very difficult to glue the halves of the blocks together without getting glue on the pins as well. I started on one set and never did complete it because it just sapped my will to go on with them 🙂

The MiniArt tracks are much better (and, I assume, the new Gecko ones too, as they use the same method of construction as MiniArt) while the AFV Club T51s are easier still — but on their T48s, some of the end connectors are too loose and will fall off. You have to file an ejector pin mark off each block with the AFV Club tracks, but that's nowhere near as bad as putting together the Bronco ones, IMHO.
 20 January, 09:30
M4A1
Thanks Jakko for sharing your experiences with Bronco. I've completed 3 track sets of them and experienced what you said as well. I also completed a MiniArt Sherman track set, the one I originally intended for this project, but for some reason Bronco works better for me. I also ran into problems with the MiniArt set. The most important lesson I learned, regardless MiniArt or Bronco, is to be carefull with the amount of glue.

Thanks Ben. I'm aware of that and it's a nice addition. Think I'm gonna use it. Left side track is on the Sherman for visuals. It's very loose because it's a dry fit.

@Jakko, based on the pic I understand you think that. But I haven't connected both track ends yet. I have to put both parts of the track shoe visible under the middle bogie on top of eachother. Then the track should be fine.

Is it a nice kit? I am planning to build a Hurricane and have not decided which one to buy yet.
 5 February, 18:33
Mark Sherwood
It is a nice kit considering it's age. The problem being, the wing comprises five parts. Gear bay, front of the gear bay, port/ starboard upper wings and a whole under wing. Because the build was going well, I duped myself and constructed the wing. This caused alignment problems and a massive step on the portside. Subsequently, it snapped on forcing the issue. Luckily I have a donor kit, which I am dry fitting at the moment to see how it aligns and the best way to fit it. Posting pic's and description soon.

Michael/Łukasz. New Mustangs has the wings primed, sanded, primed again, sanded and then painted. Exceptions are the landing gear access panel, ammunition access panels and fuel tank access panels under the wing.

I had a big fight in the next topic on P-51, where the author stubbornly wants to depict the rivets on the wing.
But everything is correct here, but not quite. You still removed one line of embroidery in vain. The P-51 had detachable wing parts and the line should be there.

I see that my advice has come in handy.
As for the wheel niches, at some point the manufacturers got permission not to paint them with a primer. Later, in combat conditions, places with corrosion were found in the niches. These places were painted with a primer right on the field airfields. Then the niches began to be painted at the factory again. The color of the soil could be different.

I used Ammo's Cobra acrylic paint - 'Gulf Orange' as I had it to hand and like the colour. The Cobra paints are good covering and tough. One caution do not use their "cleaner & lacquer thinner" to thin it as I did, by not reading label, before adding to the acrylic unless you want an airbrush full of a custard like substance 🫣🙄. When you use their Acrylic thinner it works a treat 👍

Welcome all those following
The decals are great and work well with micro sol/set. I was concerned I'd mess the long single colour stripe so cut it into smaller sections. The first went well but the second split into smaller pieces on the paper while soaking, not sure if I did this by forcing it flat? Apart from that they work great as can be seen in the hatch decal on front of boat. I still chickened out with the other side but only cut in half and didn't unfurl till transferring and it remained in complete sections 👍

#Roland I too have the Severn kit but have heard it trickier than this modern example
