Gunsight glasses didn’t last long - went “ping” and never to be seen again …

Album image #5
Yep - those are not panel lines … they are horrible seams that are not supposed to be there

Album image #6
Same on this side … there were more on the rear lower fuselage-but I noticed them before painting

Album image #7
Scrape scrape scrape …

Album image #8
More scrape scrape scrape …

Album image #9
Spinner is awful so tried to reprofile it … it’s better but not great

Album image #10
The reason the spinner needs fixing … too blunt and bulbous

Album image #11
Not perfect but seams gone …

Masking is fun they said …

Bit crooked on the balkenkrauz …

Album image #16
Stencils are HGW wet transfers … lovely stuff

Album image #17
Album image #18
Hinge added to the oil cooler cowling same as top cowlings

Album image #19
Spinner is better than it was …

Album image #20
There’s no cowl hinge on the kit parts - added with a .020 styrene rod and some sharp blade cuts to look like a hinge

Stunning build! I really liked your shading along panel lines. Just right amount without looking like a grid. How did you shade those panel lines?

Also, any issues with this kit? Would you do anything different?

Thanks, Paul

paul - I used a very thin mix (90% levelling thinners) of tamiya smoke applied in very thin lines at about 8-10 psi ... as for the kit - construction is pretty good - it's the accuracy issues that are the main problem . the large scale planes forum has a great section on "fixing" the major issues with many big kits - i did a couple of those fixes - the rudder is way too short horizontally - used a resin one for the hasegawa kit , but i think the worst is the spinner - too bulbous - once you see the profile of a hasegawa resin fix you can't unsee it - unfortunately a resin replacement for the trumpy kit is hard to get so I just machined the original down to improve the profile ... it's better but not perfect . for the next trumpy one ( doing a G-6 that is currently in the australian war museum ) i'm using the model monkey 3d printed prop hub and spinner to save the machine work ...

Bill,
Thanks for your thorough answer. I'll give the smoke a try.

Looking at your photo of the right side of the forward fuselage that labeled, "scrape, scrape, scrape" ….i wonder if there's an interesting weathering technique there? The scraping (except down to plastic) looks pretty legit. 🤔

And I like your display cabinet. Could I see some more photos of that and any data you could provide: maker, size, lighting, etc.

Paul - the scraping was something I forgot about the kit . There are mould seams on the upper cowls (that are in the perfect spot for panel lines) and on the lower sides of the fuselage that both need to be removed… I noticed the fuselage ones in assembly but thought the cowl ones were supposed to be there … hence the scraping to remove them (definitely easiest way) cabinets are from ikea - have extra shelves made from perspex but no lighting . Will add some photos

This is a rare build where the weathering is done just right IMHO - pronounced enough but not too much where it buries the details, but rather accentuates them. VERY WELL DONE!
